From f. 248r the signatures λγ-λϛ are on the first folio recto, upper margin and on the last folio of each quire, verso, lower margin, missing on f. 272v; the signature λζ on f. 269r is in pencil.
Condition
The manuscript is damaged in several places, with tears and stains and margins with cuts or holes. Folios [i] and [iv] are detached, and f. 272 is badly damaged with loss of text.
Layout
ff. 1*v-2*v: written space 260 × 163 mm. 30 lines, in two columns.
ff. 3r-272r: written space 230 × 155 mm. 29 lines, in two columns. Pricked in the outer margins. Ruled in hardpoint, system Leroy 1, type Leroy 13C2c .
Hand(s)
ff. 1*v-2*v are copied in a Hodegon-style mixed minuscule script, with variable slant, in dark brown ink, with variation in letter size. Syllabic abbreviations and superscript word are not in use. Breathings are round and mute iota is present.
The majuscule eta, small kappa, lunate sigma and loop epsilon are present. Xi ligated to preceding letter is enlarged.
Punctuation used includes the lower, middle and upper points, lower and middle commas and full stop.
The manuscript is written in a mixed minuscule script, upright or slanting slightly to the right, in dark brown ink, pending from the ruling line. There is only moderate variation in letter size.
Ypsilon is majuscule and stigma is widely in use; syllabic abbreviations and superscription usually appear only at the ends of lines, but occasionally in mid-line. Breathings are round and mute iota is adscript without consistency.
Punctuation used includes the middle and upper point, middle and lower comma, and full stop.
Decoration
The beginning of the text on f. 1*v is preceded by a rectangular headpiece with acanthus leaves in black and red ink.
A rectangular headpiece in brown ink opens each text from f. 3v to f. 230r. Minor hair-line decoration on f. 22v and from f. 244r.
A large ornate intial, outlined in red and black ink, is present on f. 1*v.
Decorated intials in each text and throughout the manuscript, in brown ink, from f. 3v.
Additions
f. [ii] recto: The works of Gregory, Archbishop of Constantinople, wrote about 600 years ago, by Dr Anthony Askew, according to Luard's catalogue; and no. 642 (stroke out), L. Lu. and 112; below: Basilii Magni Homilia in sanctam Christi Generationem by R. Porson.
Some scribbles on f. 17r, and notes on ff. 21r, 62v, 63r, 107v, 130r, 145r, 147r, 170v, 191v, 243r, 246v, 264r and 268v. Some hands are drawn on ff. 63r, 230v and 266v. and a man (?) on f. 78v.
Binding
Boards with pale brown full skin covering over couched-laminate boards. The title (Gregorius Naz. MS) and the classmark are tooled in gold on the spine.
Both boards are detached and spine severerly damaged.
337 × 250 × 129 mm.
History
The characteristics of the script suggest that the insertion of ff. [ii] recto-2*v was produced during the 16th or 17th century.
Provenance and Acquisition
Some monocondyles are present on f. 272v, but they are barely legible. On the same folio there is a name of Μιχαηλ ἀναγνώστης, otherwise unknown.
The manuscript belonged to the collection of John Petty, 1st Earl of Shelburne (1706-1761) or of his son William Petty, 2nd Earl of Shelburne (1737-1805) , Marquess of Lansdowne from 1784, who later donated the manuscript to the University Library. Shelburne's bookplate remains on the left cover, inner.
Richard Farmer (1735-1797), Principal Librarian in 1778-1797, wrote on left cover, inner: This book was a present from Lord Shelburne to the University Library, in return of a compliment paid him by the principal Librarian, who, on his earnest request, gave up to him a M.S. purchased at Dr Askew's auction; the auction of the Askew library took place in 1785, therefore the manuscript must have come to the University Library between 1785 and 1797. The University of Cambridge general bookplate (engraved by William Jackson in 1706-1707) was added on f. [ii] recto.
