Introduction:
This manuscript, probably copied in the
11th century, contains a selection of works of
John Chrysostom, homilies from
various series delivered by the Patriarch of
Constantinople and leading patristic theologian (d.
407). It was originally the latter part of a large
manuscript later divided into two parts. The other
part is now
MS Nn.1.21
. One folio which became detached from this
portion has been erroneously bound into that
volume.
Notes in Nn.1.21 indicate that during the
early modern period the original, undivided manuscript was owned by one
Ioannes Porphiros Chalasophoures, who together with
his wife Anastasia Sophelia donated it to the
Monastery of the Panagia Pantochara. This fortified monastery is located on the tiny
island of Stamfani, larger of the two remote islands
of the Strofades or Strofadia, to the south of
Zakynthos.
It has since been rededicated to the Transfiguration of Christ
and
St Dionysios of Zakynthos
(1547-1622)
, once its abbot.

Form: codex
Support:
Parchment (FHHF), of medium thickness and quite good
quality.
Extent:
Codex:
iii + 166 + iii
327 × 232 mm.
Foliation: The manuscript is
foliated with the numbers [i-iii] + 1-166 +
[iv-vi], in black ink, in Arabic numerals, recto,
upper right.
Collation
The manuscript consists of 21 quires, all of
which are quaternia.
- Quires 1-208
ff. 1-160
- Quire 218-2
ff. 161-166
The first and last folios have been lost,
with loss of text.
There are early quire signatures in Greek
numerals, in brown ink, at the end of each quire,
verso, lower right, probably original to the
production of the manuscript. Some have been lost
to cropping, though in these cases traces of their
decoration survive. This sequence evidently began
from number 25, reflecting the existence of what
is now the separate first volume. They survive in
whole or in part on Quires 7-20 (καʹ-μδʹ).
There are also modern quire signatures in Greek
numerals at the beginning of each quire, in
pencil, recto, lower right. The numbers are the
same as those of the first sequence, and have been
corrected. They appear on all quires.
Condition
The fore-edge margins of ff. 17 and 49 have been cut away.
There are occasional small tears to the edges,
mainly in the last few folios (ff. 163-166). There is
significant discoloration to the last few folios,
and some dirt and drops of wax elsewhere. Erasure
of a word on f.
60r has weakened the parchment and
resulted in holes through this folio. Small areas
of text have occasionally become abraded, and
these have sometimes been overwritten.
Layout
Two
columns of 30 lines.
242 × 157 mm.
Pricking does not survive.
Ruled in hardpoint, system
Leroy 1, type Leroy 31C2a. Text hangs from the lines or is
written along them.
Hand(s)
The manuscript was copied in a mixed minuscule Perlschrift,
slanting slightly to the right, in brown ink, with
limited variation in letter size and some
flourishing of tails into the lower margin. The
same hand has added the headings, in Alexandrine majuscule script,
in brown ink.
Syllabic abbreviations are not in use, apart from
the horizontal stroke for nu, which appears only at the end of lines,
while superscript word endings are also not used.
Breathings are both angular and round and mute iota is usually absent but
occasionally adscript. Use of the double dot is
functional only, and nomina
sacra are rarely accentuated, and
usually only when more than three letters long or
with enclitics. The double grave accent is in use.
Circumflexes very rarely appear above breathings.
Nomina sacra
strokes are often decorated with an X-shape.
Marginal quotation marks of different types are
used.
Most majuscule forms are in use in the minuscule
text, but not mu, upsilon or omega. The long-bowed beta is present, with a straight back and
often angular loops.
Punctuation used includes the lower, middle and
upper points, lower comma, question mark and full
stop. The lower comma is rarely used, small pauses
being indicated mostly by the lower point.
Decoration
Each homily begins with a major
initial in brown ink, usually slightly ornamented.
Enlarged minor initials in brown ink mark the
beginning of paragraphs.
Very simple vignettes,
line-fillers and other basic ornament in brown ink
accompany the beginning and end of
homilies.
Quatrefoil plaits in brown ink
outline, sometimes with red paint infill, have been
used to highlight certain points in the text (ff.
105v, 115v, 120v, 122v, 155r).
A rough outline for an image,
possibly of a head with a halo, has been placed on
f. 106v,
probably by a later hand, but has not been
completed.
Additions
The scribe has placed marginal homily numbers
alongside the beginning of each homily, forming a single
sequence continuing that found in
MS Nn.1.21
, and marginal ὅρα and ση(μείωσαι) marks to
highlight notable passages of text (e.g. ff.
15v,
21v,
29v). At the beginning of each homily a
later hand has placed homily numbers identical to those
used by the original scribe in the upper margin, while
another hand has placed counts of the number of folios in
each homily here. There are brief marginal annotations in
Greek by various later hands. A hand using black ink has
overwritten faded original text in places.
Binding
18th-century full leather binding over
couched-laminate boards, with marbled pastedowns
and outer endleaves. The edges have been marbled
in the same pattern as the pastedowns and
endleaves. There are decoratve gold-tooled borders
on both boards, with a crown motif, and gold
tooling on the edges of the boards. The spine
bears extensive decorative gold tooling, the
classmark on labels, and the title ‘Chrysostomi varia’ and ‘Tom. II. M.S.’ tooled
in gold on
black leather labels.
350 × 263 × 62 mm.
Accompanying Material
Numerous small marker slips of paper have been inserted
loose between folios at the head of the
manuscript.
Origin: The manuscript originally formed part of a single volume
with
MS Nn.1.21
. It was probably copied during the
11th century, on the
basis of the style of script.
Provenance and Acquisition
Owned by
Ioannes Porphiros
Chalasophoures
, and donated by him and his wife
Anastasia
Sophelia
to the Monastery of the Panagia Pantochara,
Strophades (founded 1241), in the
Ionian Islands, Greece, as indicated by his notes in
MS Nn.1.21
, f. i verso.
Owned by
Anthony Askew
(1722-1774)
.
After Askew's death, the
manuscript was sold by G. Leigh and J. Sotheby in the
auction of his library in 1785 (MS Nn.4.2, lot 613), and
eventually bought by
Richard Farmer
for Cambridge University Library.
