Physical Description
Collation
The manuscript consists of 38 quires, of which one is a binion, two are ternia and the rest quaternia.
- Quire 16 ff. i-vi
- Quires 2-58 ff. 1-32
- Quire 66 ff. 33-38
- Quires 7-338 ff. 39-254
- Quire 344 ff. 255-258
- Quires 35-378 ff. 259-282
- Quire 386 ff. 283-288
There are orignal quire signatures in red ink, in Greek numerals, on the first folio of each quire, recto, lower right. This sequence always omitted the first 18 quires, since it begins with the number 1 at the start of Quire 19 (f. 135r), and perhaps also omitted the last 4 quires, which also lack these signatures. They appear on quires 19-34 (αʹ-ιϛʹ). They are occasionally slightly ornamented (e.g. ff. 199r, 207r).
A sequence of signatures in Armenian numerals, in black ink, has been placed on the first folio of each quire, recto, lower centre, and on the last folio of each quire, verso, lower centre. They appear on quires 2-38, beginning with the number 2. They are surrounded by simple ornament.
Modern quire signatures in Arabic numerals, in pencil, have been added to the first folio of each quire, recto, lower right.
Condition
Layout
A single column of 28-30 lines. 122 × 92 mm. Pricking sometimes survives on all three edges, but some has been lost to cropping. Ruled in hardpoint, system Leroy 1, type Leroy 32C1. Text hangs from the lines. The ruling is often very faint. Text preceding a punctuation mark, ranging in length from part of a word to a few words, is often written below the last line of text on a page, rather than carry the phrase on into the next page. The text at the end of each Gospel and of some Epistles is arranged in decorative patterns. The later summary lectionary text is written in a single column of 19-25 lines, without ruling.
Hand(s)
ff. i recto-v verso, 1r-38r, 31r-61v, 63r-132r, 147v, line 5-f. 288v Most of the main text has been copied by Hand A in a calligraphic mixed minuscule script, with slightly variable slant but on average upright, in black ink. There is moderate variation in letter size, frequent flourishing of tails into the margins, and very numerous and elaborate ligatures.
Syllabic abbreviations and superscript word endings usually appear only at the end of lines, but occasionally elsewhere. Breathings are round and mute iota is usually absent, but very occasionally appears both adscript and subscript. There is decorative use of the double dot, and accentuation of all nomina sacra . The double grave accent is in use.
There are inclusions of letters within omicron. Distinctive letter-forms include a curving zeta opening to the right and resembling majuscule epsilon, extremely small majuscule eta, minuscule kappa with the ascender curved over to the right, majuscule lambda with its right-hand descender hooked back to the left, and minuscule nu with a minimal descender. The abbreviation of καὶ is sometimes used as part of a longer word.
Punctuation used includes the lower, middle and upper points, lower, middle and upper commas, question mark and full stop.
This hand has also provided the rubric and canon table text, in red ink in a similar style.
ff. 135r-147v, line 4 The early part of the Gospel of Luke has been copied by Hand B, as part of the same original programme of work, in a mixed minuscule script with very square letter-forms, slanting to the right, with moderate variation in letter size and some flourishing of tails into the margins.
Breathings are round or occasionally angular and elongated, and mute iota is absent, with decorative use of the double dot and accentuation of all nomina sacra . The double grave accent is in use.
Punctuation used includes the upper and middle points, lower and middle commas, question mark and full stop.
ff. v verso-vi verso, 38v, 61v-62v, 132v-134v Summary lection listings and a list of the Epistles have been added by Hand C, in a slightly informal mixed minuscule script, slanting slightly to the right, in pale brown ink. There is modest variation in letter size
Breathings are round or half-angular and mute iota is absent, with accentuation of all nomina sacra . Use of the double dot is functional only.
Decoration
Gospels and Acts are preceded by rectangular headpieces with vegetative ornament, in red ink:-
- f. 1r Matthew
- f. 39r Mark
- f. 63r Luke
- f. 103r John
- f. 135r Acts
The beginning of the Epistles (f. 180r) is preceded by the slightly decorated boundary markings for another such headpiece, but the ornament within it and at the corners (for which gaps were left) was not added. These were supplied by a later hand in black ink.
Vignettes in red and black ink, with animal heads or occasionally vegetative ornament at their terminals, mark the end of each Gospel (e.g. ff. 338r, 102v), and the end of some Epistles or hypotheses and the beginning of the next (e.g. ff. 258v-259r, 263v-264r).
The canon tables (ff. i recto-v recto) have decorative surrounds in red ink, with architectural and vegetative ornament.
The text of each book or hypothesis begins with a relatively small ornamented major initial in red ink, in the same style as the headpieces. That for Matthew (f. 1r) is more ornate than the others, in the same style as the accompanying headpiece. Minor initials in red ink frequently appear at the beginning of lines.
Line-fillers in red and black ink, with vegetative terminals, accompany the end or beginning of some Epistles and hypotheses (e.g. ff. 272r, 276v-277r).
Rectangular boundaries for miniatures, presumably author portraits, have been marked out preceding one Epistle by each writer, but these have never been added:-
- f. 179v James
- f. 190r 2 Peter
- f. 194r 1 John
- f. 200v Jude
- f. 203r Romans
From this it may be conjectured that the pages left blank between books among the Gospels and Acts (ff. v verso-vi verso, 38v, 62r-62v, 132v-134v) were originally intended for larger miniatures, including Evangelist portraits, but that these two were never added, leaving the space free for Hand C to fill them with text at a later date.
Additions
As part of the original production of the manuscript, Hands A and B have added marginal κεφάλαιον (chapter) numbers and τίτλοι (titles), Ammonian section numbers for the Gospels, and lection notes, and have placed ἀρχὴ and τέλος marks indicating the beginning and end of lections, in spaces left blank for the purpose in the text. Hand B has also added marginal quotation marks for Old Testament citations.
Occasional notes on lections have been added by various later hands (e.g. ff. 28r, 51v, 270v).
An ownership note has been added on f. i recto by the hieromonachos Makarios: ‘Ἐτοῦτω τῶ τετραβάγγελω ἡπάρχη ἐμοῦ Μακαρίου ἰἐρομονάχου, καὶ ἦτης τῶ πάρη..ας εχηται ἀρᾶς τῶν τρηακοσίων δέκα καὶ οκτῶ θεοφόρων πατέρων ἀμήν’. A note in an earlier hand on f. 288v may also be an ownership note, but is faded and substantially illegible.
A Latin hand, in black ink, has added modern chapter and verse numbers in runinng headers, and noted the content of the manuscript on f. 1r.
Binding
Binding by W.H. Smith and Son in London, according to a note on the left pastedown. Quarter leather, with marbled paper covering over millboards and plain pastedowns. The classmark and the title ‘Novum Testamentum Graecum’ are tooled in gold on the spine. The edges have been painted red, but only limited traces remain.
200 × 158 × 74 mm.
Accompanying Material
Two scraps of leather from an older binding, bearing portions of the current shelfmark, have been pasted inside the left board.
History
Provenance and Acquisition
Owned by the hieromonachos Makarios , probably in the 17th or 18th century.
Possibly presented in 1715 by George I , as part of the collection of John Moore (b. 1646, d. 1714), bishop of Ely . This is suggested by the presence inside the left board of the bookplate used for this collection. However, this bookplate was sometimes incorrectly placed in manuscripts which did not belong to this collection, and this manuscript is not recorded as part of it in Bernard, Catalogi librorum manuscriptorum Angliæ et Hiberniæ (1697), nor in the handwritten supplementary list of Moore’s manuscripts, now MS Oo.7.50(2), compiled by Thomas Tanner .
