Book 4 only; ends imperfectly. MS Mm.5.22 is one of only three manuscripts to contain Book 4 only: the other two are Bern, Burgerbibliothek, Cod. 347, ff. 26r-41v (MS 'Bern') and Geneva, Bibliothèque de Genève, MS lat. 84 (MS 'Gen'); see Lindsay (1901). According to Onions (1889), Book Four of the text in Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France, MS Lat. 7667 (MS 'P') was copied from MS Mm.5.22, which is closely related to the Geneva manuscript mentioned above and the first hand of London, British Library, Harley MS 2719. (MS 'H').

Provenance and Acquisition

Perhaps from the Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Sulpice, Bourges : 'de sancto sulpicio' written on f. 1r by a 16th-century hand. The manuscript was acquired by John Moore (see below) in 1701, along with another manuscript certainly from Bourges, now Cambridge, University Library, MS Gg.2.32.

McKitterick (1986), p. 139

John Moore (1646-1714) , bishop of Ely: no. 1005 (front pastedown) in the handwritten supplementary list of Moore's manuscripts, now MS Oo.7.50(2), compiled by Thomas Tanner (1674-1735) after the publication of Bernard, Catalogi librorum manuscriptorum Angliæ et Hiberniæ (c. 1697).

The manuscript was borrowed in 1702 by Richard Bentley (1662-1742) , for his collation of the text. Bentley's copy of an edition of Nonius Marcellus (Nonii Marcelli nova editio. Additus est libellus Fulgentii de prisco sermone et notae in Nonium et Fulgentium, ed. by Josias Mercer (Paris, 1614) survives as British Library, 684.c.14, and contains a full collation of this manuscript (see Additions and note on f. [iii] recto).

Presented to the University Library in 1715 by George I (1660-1727) : donation bookplate engraved by John Pine (1690-1756) in 1736 on the front pastedown.
