Diktyon no.: Diktyon 12220

Contents

Introduction: This Greek Gospel book was produced at the end of 15th century for the humanist scholar Guillaume Budé (b. 1468, d. 1540) by Georgios Hermonymos of Sparta (b. c. 1430, d. c. 1511), who in addition to being a copyist, was also a diplomat (he was sent to England by Pope Sixtus IV) and the first lecturer of Greek at the Collège de Sorbonne in Paris. The manuscript was meant to be a grand copy, made with high quality parchment, initials decorated or traced with gold ink, as well as marginal summaries, running heads and a final colophon. The original cover is lost and replaced by a medium quality one. Hermonymos also copied CUL Kk.5.35, Kk.6.23, Nn.4.2 and Corpus Christi College, Parker Library, Cambridge, MS 224; Kk.5.35 and Ll.2.13 have in common the Gospels and two final texts from Psellus and Gregory of Nazianus. It is possible that one of the two manuscripts is a copy of the other. Dr Matteo Di Franco

Physical Description

Form: codex
Support: Thick parchment (FHHF), of high quality.
Extent: Codex: 186 leaves., 285 × 178 mm.
Foliation: 2-186. Modern foliation in pencil in Arabic numerals in the upper right-hand corner, recto. F. 1 is glued to the pastedown, so that the first folio is f. 2. An independent foliation runs in the right-hand corner of the recto of the first folio of each quire, starting from quire 3, f. 19r = 17.

Collation

The manuscript consists of 23 quaternions.

The original quire signature in Greek numerals in gold ink from αον (f. 3r) to κγον (f. 179r) remains in the middle of the lower margin of recto of the first and the verso of the last folio of each quire, except for εον and κγον only on the first recto.

Condition

In good general condition.

Layout

A single column of 23 lines (on ff. 3r, 53r, 86 and 142r about 11 lines were left vacant for miniatures). Written space: 190 × 90 mm. Pricking survives on the margins of the first quire. Ruled in red ink type Leroy 34D1. Text runs above the lines.

Hand(s)

The manuscript is written by the 15th-century Greek scholar and scribe Georgios Hermonymos (RGK I 61) in a minuscule script in pale brown ink.

Slanting slightly to the right, Hermonymos' hand shows cursive-like ductus without variation in letter size. Ligatures and abbreviations are rare. His script is characterized by the minuscules gamma, eta, xi, rho. Sigma telikon is in Z-shape and is found sometimes in the middle of the word. Breathings are curved; accents do not join to letters or breathings.

The running headlines, the marginal summaries, the quire signature and the texts on f. 184r are written in golden ink.

For further details on Georgios Hermonymos' script, see Kalatzi 2009, p. 111-132

Guillaume Budé added some marginal corrections to the text and maniculae (e.g. 17r, 33r, 40r).

Decoration

On ff. 3r, 53r, 86r and 142r the initials of each Gospel are elegantly decorated, painted alternately in red in a blue rectangle, or in blue on a red one. The initial beta on f. 3r bears the coat of arms of Guillaume Budé. The initials of the chapters are drawn in gold in rectangles one line high alternately in red or blue.

The initials of the paragraphs are gilded.

Additions

Some face profiles (e.g. 31r, 33v, 39v, 59v) are added in the margins, probably by Guillaume Budé.

A note, dated 'June 28, 1885', on the extent remains on the back board.

Binding

18th-century couched-laminate board binding covered in quarter mid-brown tanned calfskin with marbled paper on the sides. There is a red leather label on the spine with the title Quatuor Evangelia Graece tooled in gold. The classmark (Ll M.S. 2 13) is tooled directly on the spine. F. 1 is pasted on the board; f. 186 used to be pasted on the board, and traces from the marbled paper of the cover remain. The fore- top- and tail-edges are gilded. 294 × 191 × 48 mm.
