Medieval Manuscripts in Cambridge Libraries

A catalogue of Western manuscripts and papyri at Cambridge University Library, the Fitzwilliam Museum and selected Cambridge colleges

Cambridge, University Library, MS Kk.5.26

Diktyon no.: Diktyon 12209

Contents

Introduction: MS CUL Kk.5.26 is a miscellany containing Greek texts on music, mathematics and astronomy. The codex is a composite manuscript, formed of three parts. The first two (ff. 1-63) were copied in the first half of the 16th century, by Giovanni Onorio, scriptor and restaurator of the Vatican Library in the years 1535-1563, and by a contemporary hand. Part III, meanwhile, was copied around the middle of the 15th century. The manuscript was owned by Francis I, King of France, as is shown by a dedication contained in the beautiful decoration realized by Giovanni Onorio on f. 1r. The codex is no. 44 in the alphabetical catalogue of the Fontainebleau Library of 1550, Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Suppl. gr. 10 (see Omont 1889, p. 17), no. 570 on the methodic catalogue of the same year, Venezia, Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana, Nani 245 (see Omont 1889, p. 305), and is cited in the catalogue of the Greek manuscripts of the Royal Library under King Henry III (1551-1589), Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale de France, fr. 5585 , f. 126v. It is the only Greek manuscript from the Fontainebleau Library not presently held in Paris (Omont 1889, p. XXIII). Furthermore, Omont identified the Cambridge manuscript as no. 12 in the list of the manuscripts owned by Jérôme Fondule, which were sent to the Fontainebleau Library in 1529 (Omont 1889, p. 371). No. 12 is described as containing ‘Ἀριστείδου καὶ τῶν ἄλλων περὶ μουσικῆς’ (Aristeides and others on music). Kk.5.26, however, contains the work on music by Aristoxenus, not by Aristeides, consequently this identification, and its possession by Fondule, cannot be regarded as certain. Dr. Erika Elia

A modern foliation in brown ink in Arabic numerals in the top right-hand corner, recto, from 1 to 172, has been replaced and supplemented by a pencil one from 55 onwards, due to its numerous inaccuracies (brown ink foliation: [i]-[iii] + 1-54, [54a], 55-62, 62, [62a], 63-87, 87, 88-112, 105, 104, 109, 106, 107-122, 124, 126-150, 152, 155, 154, 155-172 + [iv])

Collation

ff. [i]-[iii] | 16-1, 26, 3-44 | 5-98, 104 | 11-248, 258-1 | ff. [iv]-[v]

Condition

In poor condition. Extensive water and humidity stains throughout the manuscript, in particular near the edges of ff. 1r-19v and ff. 174r-[v] verso. The left board of the binding is detached from the spine.

Binding

Modern western binding. Paper and leather (from the spine) on couched-laminate boards, gold tooled leather spine with title ‘Analeel Graeca M.S.’ and shelfmark.

Gilded edges with a gauffered foliate design.

On the left pastedown is glued the Royal bookplate; above it, the shelfmark is written in black ink.

The left board is detached from the spine.

300 × 221 × 43 mm.

Accompanying Material

ff. [i] recto-[ii] verso, and [iv] recto-[v] verso, are paper endleaves bound respectively at the beginning and at the end of the manuscript. Watermark: Letters in a shield ( 23 × 20 mm. ) in the centre of the folio comparable to Briquet Lettres assemblées 9666 , which is dated to 1550 and localized in Paris..

On f. [i] recto there is a modern annotation in pencil by a librarian describing the collation of the manuscript.

A modern blank leaf, f. [iii], has been added before f. 1, probably in order to protect the decoration on this leaf.

History

Provenance and Acquisition

Perhaps no. 12 in the list of manuscripts owned by Jérôme Fondule , which were sent to the Fontainebleau Library in 1529 (Omont 1889, p. 371). However, no. 12 is described as containing ‘Ἀριστείδου καὶ τῶν ἄλλων περὶ μουσικῆς’ (Aristeides and others on music), whereas this manuscript contains the work on music by Aristoxenus, not by Aristeides, so the possession of the manuscript by Fondule cannot be regarded as certain.

Owned by Francis I, King of France (1494-1547) , whose crest is present at f. 1r, with a dedication to him. The book was part of the Library of Fontainebleau and left the royal collection before 1622 (Jackson 2006, p.31).

John Moore (1646-1714) , bishop of Ely: no. 986 in the handwritten supplementary list of Moore's manuscripts, now MS Oo.7.50(2), compiled by Thomas Tanner (1674-1735) after the publication of Bernard, Catalogi librorum manuscriptorum Angliæ et Hiberniæ (c. 1697).

Presented to the University Library in 1715 by George I (1660-1727) : donation bookplate engraved by John Pine (1690-1756) in 1736 on the left pastedown.

Part 1 [Cambridge, University Library, MS Kk.5.26, ff. 1r-19v]

Contents

Introduction: This part of the manuscript, containing the Elements of Harmony by the fourth-century Aristotelian philosopher Aristoxenus, was copied by Giovanni Onorio da Maglie, who also executed the illumination. Dedicated to Francis I, King of France, this is an example of Giovanni Onorio's most refined work, usually destined for high-ranking patrons (see Agati 2001, pp. 104-109). The scribe wrote this same text with a very similar illumination in two other manuscripts, for different patrons: in MS Città del Vaticano, Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, Barb. gr. 265 , copied in 1543 and dedicated to Cardinal Matteo Cervini, and in MS Città del Vaticano, Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, Vat. gr. 221 , copied in the years 1535-1549 (Agati 2001, p. 288) for Pope Paul III Farnese.

Physical Description

Form: codex
Support: Western paper, folded in folio. Watermark ff. 1r-19v Arrows surmounted by a six-point star ( 73 × 27 mm. ) in the centre of the folio identical to Agati 2001, p. 130, watermark 8a, which is found in manuscripts copied by Giovanni Onorio in the years 1524-1550; the watermark is also similar to Harlfinger Flèche 19 , which is dated to 1534-1536.
Foliation: A pagination in Arabic numerals from 1 to 35 is part of running heads written by the scribe on ff. 1r-18r, at the top of the pages. They comprise the name of the author in red ink on the verso, the title of the work with the number of the book in red ink on the recto, the page number in Arabic numerals in black ink.

Collation

  • Quire 26 ff. 6-11
  • Quires 3-44 ff. 12-19

Modern signatures in pencil, in Latin letters, from A to D, by a librarian, on the lower margin, right, recto, of the first leaf of each quire.

Condition

Humidity stains are present along the external borders and in the upper part of all the leaves.

Layout

A single column of 36 lines 220 × 125 mm.

Hand(s)

Hand A: the text is written by Giovanni Onorio (1535-1563) , (RGK I, 174. See also RGK II, 232; RGK III, 286) in a minuscule, very regular and calligraphic.

The text is written in black ink, titles and initials in red and in gold.

The scribe wrote variants to the text in the margins throughout, often preceded by the indication ‘ ἐν ἄλλῳ’ in red ink, see e.g. f. 3r.

The titles are written in majuscule letters.

Decoration

On f. 1r there is a pyle with a golden contour; in the pyle, coloured in red, blue and green, there are gilded linear motifs, lilies, two cartouches, on which is written, in gold, the motto of Francis I of France ‘ Erit Christianorum lumen in igne at auro praestantior’.

On the lower part of f. 1r, Francis I's emblem is enclosed in a laurel crown, with two putti at its sides; beneath, the dedication to king Francis is written in gold on a blue band with gilded frame: ‘ Francisci regis bibliothecae dicatus’. The putti appear to belong to group "a" in Giovanni Onorio da Maglie's production (see Agati 2001, p. 106).

On f. 1r gilded initial on a coloured ground, divided in 4 squares, blue and red; in the ground, pen-flourished vegetal gilded decoration. On ff. 8r and 14v, initials in red ink decorated with a simple vegetal motif.

Around the titles on ff. 8r and 14v, three small vegetal motifs in red ink.

History

Origin:

This part of the manuscript was copied by Giovanni Onorio in the first half of the 16th century, in the years 1524-1550, probably in Rome. The watermark of this part is identical with one present in Giovanni Onorio's manuscripts in that period.

The text is written in black ink, titles and initials in red.

Decoration

Thick red-ink initials, decorated with vegetal motifs and pearls: see, for example, f. 64r, f. 72r.

Minor initials, thick, in red ink: see, for example, f. 101r.

The text is accompanied by geometrical illustrations, traced in black, with letters and terms in red (see, for example, ff. 82v, 84r).

Additions

On f. 177r, a later hand of the 16th century wrote a title for the work in the upper margin.

On f. 181v a later hand copied a short part of the last text of the manuscript, the Hippiatrica (Hoppe-Oder 1924, p. 10 ll. 16-18).

On the lower margin f. 181r, in modern pencil, a later hand added a reference to the edition of the preceding text ( Hippiatrica) by Ruel (Basel, 1537).

History

Origin:

This part of the manuscript was copied around the middle of the 15th century, as suggested by the watermarks.
