Contents

Introduction: Manuscript Kk.5.7 contains a single text, Erotian, Collection of Hippocratic words , a glossary of medical terms. Not much is known about this author, who lived in the 1st century CE, during the reign of emperor Nero. This copy of the text was made around the middle of the 16th century by the scribe Manuel Provataris (also known as Emmanuel Graecus). Born in Crete, Provataris was Scriptor at the Vatican Library from 1546-1571. Manuscript Kk.5.7 is currently bound as the second part of a single volume with three other manuscripts, Kk.5.6, 8 and 9. History

Origin:

The text was copied by Manuel Provataris in Italy around the middle of the 16th century, which the watermarks confirm.

Provenance and Acquisition

As stated in a note on f. 1r, the manuscript was part of the library of the Parisian physician Jacques Mentel (1597-1671) : ‘ Ex Bibliotheca Jacobi Mentelii V.P.C’. Near the note, probably by another hand, in red, there is a date, ‘ 1670 mense maii’. Mentel died in Paris in 1671, so the date of 1670 could indicate the time when the manuscript was acquired from his collection (see D.F. Jackson, The Greek Manuscripts of John Moore and Etienne Baluze, in Codices Manuscripti 56/57 (2006), pp. 29-41: 30).

Cambridge, University Library, Mm.1.17 was also owned by Mentel (see ownership inscription on f. 1r). That manuscript was previously owned by J.B. Hautin (probably to be identified with Jean Baptiste II Hautin, son of the French scholar and numismatist Jean-Baptiste Hautin (ca. 1580-1640) ), and it may be that MS Kk.5.7 was also owned by him.

John Moore (1646-1714) , bishop of Ely: no. 977 in the handwritten supplementary list of Moore's manuscripts, now MS CUL Oo.7.50(2), compiled by Thomas Tanner after the publication of Bernard, Catalogi librorum manuscriptorum Angliæ et Hiberniæ (c. 1697).

Presented to the University Library in 1715 by George I (1660-1727) : donation bookplate engraved by John Pine (1690-1756) in 1736 on the left pastedown.
