Numbering in pencil at intervals in the lower right-hand corner of the rectos, by an unidentified hand of the 19th century.
Collation
Close similarities in production and decoration point to this manuscript having been made in a single campaign, though as four codicological units: Quires 1-5, Quires 6-8, Quires 9-14 and Quires 15-19). There are blank spaces or leaves at the end of some of the final quires, following the conclusion of their texts; copying resumes on the first leaf of a fresh quire thereafter; and the leaf signatures restart rather than continue the same sequence.
- Quire 112-1 (ff. 2-12: 1st leaf missing, f. '1')
- Quires 2-410 (ff. 13-44)
- Quire 512-1 (ff. 45-56: 11th leaf missing, f. '55') ;
- Quires 6-812 (ff. 57-92) ;
- Quires 9-1112 (ff. 93-128)
- Quire 128 (ff. 129-136)
- Quire 1310 (ff. 137-146)
- Quire 142 (ff. 147-148) ;
- Quires 15-1712 (ff. 149-184)
- Quire 1810 (ff. 185-192)
- Quire 198 (ff. 193-200)
112-1 (1st missing) 2-410 512-1 (11th missing) ; 6-812 ; 9-1112 128 1310 142 ; 15-1712 1810 198
All written faintly in leadpoint in the lower right-hand corner of the rectos of the first half the quire. Found in Quires 2 (b v-b vi), 3 (c i-c ii, c v), 5 (e i, e iiii); 6 (a iii, a v), 7 (b i-b iv), 8 (c i, c iv-c vi); 9 (a ii-a vi), 10 (b i-b vi), 11 (c i-c vi), 12 (d i-d iv, plus d v), 13 (e ii-e iii, e v); 15 (a ii), 18 (1-4).

Notes on ff. i and 199-200 written by several hands of the early and mid-14th century.
Decoration
Four- to six-line puzzle initials in red and blue, with infill and marginal flourishing in red and blue, sometimes with short rectilinear borders in the same colours, at the beginning of texts (and occasionally elsewhere).
Two- to three-line initials in blue, with infill and marginal flourishing in red, and occasionally with short rectilinear borders in red and blue, at chapter divisions and the beginning of books within a text.
Additions
Notes in leadpoint (now faint) added to ff. 56r-56v.
Binding
Early 17th-century, full blind-tooled calf with rectangular and diamond-shaped frames, over pasteboards. Rebacked in the 18th century.
Rust stains and a hole, in the centre of the lower margin of f. i, consistent with the former presence of a chain staple on the front cover.
History
Provenance and Acquisition
'K. xxxvii': pressmark of
Norwich Cathedral Priory
, from 'Heruei de Swafham' (f. 2r).
According to N.R. Ker, this was among the books acquired after 1272 and before c.
1325. '
Herveus de Swaffham
does not appear to have been a member of the community,' Ker noted, and presumably
was the manuscript's donor. For his obit (9 January), see London, British Library,
Harley MS 3950 (early 14th cent.); also mentioned in the sacrist's roll for 1301-2 (roll 222). Two
medieval
tables of contents for the manuscript are now bound as endleaf guards in Cambridge,
University Library, MS Ii.4.2, another Norwich manuscript.
Notes on the contents by an unidentified 16th-century hand (f. 2r, bottom
margin). This hand was mentioned by Ker as occurring in manuscripts acquired by Cambridge
University Library after
1582 and before 1600, both those from Norwich and others, but never in manuscripts
recorded at the University Library
in the 1556 and 1573 catalogues (or by Thomas James between nos 6 and 107).
Probably came to Cambridge University Library via or through the agency of
Andrew Perne (?1519-1589)
, Vice-Chancellor and Master of Peterhouse,
either in 1584-85 or after his death. The manuscript is not recorded in the list of
books compiled in 1583, but appears as
no. 161 in Thomas James, Ecloga Oxonio-Cantabrigiensis (1600), suggesting its arrival
between those two dates (see Early catalogues of manuscripts, up to c. 1600 for further details).
