Contents

Introduction: This manuscript is the latter part of a book containing the Pauline Epistles with catena, a supporting sequence of extracts from commentaries in the margins, originally copied in the late 10th or early 11th century. Probably during the third quarter of the 12th century, it was expanded by the insertion of new quires with further commentary, preceding each epistle. The early part of the original manuscript, containing Romans, 1 Corinthians and 2 Corinthians, along with prefatory hagiographic texts on St Paul, at some point became detached from this. It is now Oxford, Magdalen College, MS gr. 7. The layout of the original manuscript was planned around the inclusion of the catena in its broad margins. Each book was also preceded by a prefatory hypothesis describing its context and content, and by a list of chapters (κεφάλαια). At the beginning of the original manuscript, now part of the Magdalen College volume, were prefatory texts of a more general nature. The excerpts comprising the catena are drawn largely from the commentary of Photios I, Patriarch of Constantinople (c. 820-c. 891) , a text which survives only through its presence in catenae. When an owner in the 12th century undertook to expand this by adding portions of the commentary which had not been selected for inclusion in the original catena, the new material was copied in continuous text on quires of appropriate size. These were then inserted into the original quires, directly following the folio containing the end of the book to which each block of added commentary relates. Since the end of a book would not usually coincide exactly with the end of a folio, the original content pertaining to the next book is generally interrupted by the inserted folios. To compensate for this, the text preceding the insertions, which had been cut off from the book to which it belonged, was replicated by the new scribe, following the commentary and thus restoring the full content in a continuous run. This rendered the material which had been cut off redundant, and this was usually struck through by the scribe to prevent confusion, though in some cases this action was omitted. The manuscript retains parchment endleaves from an earlier binding, presumably made after its arrival in western Europe, which include reused folios from a 13th-century Latin manuscript. Physical Description

Form: codex
Support: Parchment (FHHF); the original leaves are of variable thickness and medium quality, while the inserted ones are quite thin and of good quality. Where a run of inserted leaves does not constitute a full quire, the disposition of flesh and hair sides is sometimes erratic.

Collation

The main body of the manuscript consists of 38 quires, of which 16 consist of inserted folios. The 22 composed of original folios belong to 15 original quires, some of which have been divided by the insertion of folios; these 15 comprised two binia, one ternion, eleven quaternia and one quinion. Some may remain intact structures, with the inserted folios added within them, but the appearance of an early quire signature on Quire 17 (f. 80r) suggests that folios were detached from at least some original quires. For clarity, the separated portions have all been treated as distinct entities, with notes specifying their relationship to one another.

The first 21 quires of this manuscript are now Oxford, Magdalen College, MS gr. 7.

There are quire signatures in Greek numerals, in brown ink, recto, lower right, on both original and inserted quires, beginning from the number 22 (κβʹ). Some have been wholly or partially lost to cropping. They survive in whole or in part on Quires 1-3, 10-11, 13-17, 19, 24, 30, 34-38 (κβʹ-κδʹ, κηʹ-κθʹ, λαʹ-λεʹ, λεʹ (?), ?, ?, μʹ-μδʹ). The number 35 (λεʹ) appears on the inserted Quire 17 (f. 80r), but this seems to be a duplication of the signature on the following original Quire 19 (f. 89r). The 15 original quires have been marked with quire signatures in Arabic numerals, in pencil, recto, lower right. These ignore the inserted folios and the separation of parts of the original quires. They appear on Quires 4-5, 9, 12-13, 15-16, 19, 24, 27, 30, 33-36 (1-15).

Condition

There are tears from the edges of ff. 135 and 171, and a split in f. 154. There is significant creasing to f. 171. There is mild water staining and occasional areas of dirt.

Hand(s)

ff. 20r-30v, 39r-50v, 62r-67v, 72r-79v, 82r-89v, 93r-96v, 99r-107v, 112r-118v, 123r-127v, 137r-162v were copied by Hand A, in mixed minuscule script, upright or slanting slightly to the right, in brown ink, with modest variation in letter size.

Syllabic abbreviations and superscript word endings appear only at the end of lines in the main text but throughout the line in the catena. Breathings are angular and mute iota is absent. There is occasional decorative use of the double dot. Nomina sacra are accentuated only when more than three letters long or with enclitics. Accents are small. The double grave accent and marginal quotation marks are present.

All majuscule letter-forms are present except gamma, upsilon, psi, omega.

Punctuation used includes the lower, middle and upper points, lower and middle commas, question mark and full stop.

Chapter headings are written in Alexandrine majuscule script in brown ink.

ff. 3r-19v, 31r-38v, 51r-61v, 68r-71v, 80r-81v, 90r-92v, 97r-98v, 108r-111v, 119r-122v, 128r-136v, 163r-171v were copied by Hand B, in mixed minuscule script, upright or slanting slightly to the right, in brown ink, with moderate variation in letter size.

Syllabic abbreviations and superscript word endings appear throughout the line. Breathings are usually round but occasionally angular, and mute iota is in a transitional form, below and to the right of the letter. Use of the double dot is functional only, and there is accentuation of all nomina sacra . The double grave accent is present.

Punctuation used includes the middle and upper points, lower and middle commas and full stop.

Headings are written in the same style in red ink.

Decoration

Sections begin with simple initials in red ink.

Some texts are preceded by simple vignettes in red ink.

Additions

As part of the production of the original portion of the manuscript, Hand A has marked the main text in the margin with κεφάλαιον (chapter) numbers in brown ink, with headings in the outer margin. The catena is marked in the margin with section numbers in brown ink.

A later hand has added interlinear numbers in brown ink to the main text, identifying the correspondence of passages with the sections of the catena. Another has added lection notes in the outer margins in brown ink. Much of these have been lost to cropping.

Hand B has marked the inserted portion of the catena in the margins with section numbers in red ink, and added corresponding numbers, in red ink, in the margins of the original portion of the manuscript, together with lection notes (including ἀρχή and τέλος marks), also in red ink.

Running headers in Latin in the upper margin, in brown ink, identify the current Epistle of the original portion of the manuscript. Modern chapter numbers in Arabic numerals, in brown ink, have been added in the margin, with running numbers for the current chapter in the upper right-hand corner.

On f. 2v is a note on content: ‘Desideratur expositio Photii usque ad hunc versum. XV’. Another by the same hand appears on f. 172r: ‘Quod reliquum est huius expositionis muenies in Graecis Scholiis collectis ab Oecumenio et Aretha super librum novi Testamenti in hanc ad Hebraeos Epistolam. Quae Scholia reperies inter libros a Matthaeo Cantuariensis donatos. XV.’. There are other occasional headings and notes on content in Latin and Greek by this hand.

A heading in Latin in red crayon, by the hand responsible for the pagination, appears on f. 129r.

The former classmark 250 is marked on f. 3r.

History

Origin: The original portion of the manuscript, by Hand A, was probably copied in the late 10th or early 11th century, as suggested by the style of script. This was later supplemented by the insertion of the additional leaves copied by Hand B to expand the catena, probably in the third quarter of the 12th century.
