A catalogue of Western manuscripts and papyri at Cambridge University Library, the Fitzwilliam Museum and selected Cambridge colleges

Cambridge, University Library, MS Ee.4.29

Diktyon no.: Diktyon 12175

Contents

Introduction: This manuscript, probably copied in the first half of the 12th century, is a large Canon law collection. The texts it contains include the so-called Apostolic canons, decrees of the Ecumenical Councils of the Church and of various other synods, and canonical letters and decrees by Fathers of the Church and later prelates. The latest of its contents is a decree by the Patriarch of Constantinople Sisinnios II, issued in 998. A few original folios lost from the parchment manuscript were later substituted with paper leaves, probably in the 15th century (ff. 121-125). Six folios detached from the right-hand end of the manuscript appear to have been missed when it was most recently rebound, and are now bound separately as MS Ee.4.29*. Dr Christopher Wright

Physical Description

Form: codex
Support: Parchment (FHHF), of variable thickness and medium quality.

Collation

This part consists of 44 quires, of which two are ternia and the rest quaternia. The signatures indicate that one more quire has been lost at the beginning of the manuscript, and two more after Quire 15, whose loss has been substituted by the present Quire 16 (Part II).

  • Quires 1-158 ff. 1-120
  • Quires 17-288 ff. 126-221
  • Quire 296 ff. 222-227
  • Quire 308 ff. 228-235
  • Quire 316 ff. 236-241
  • Quires 32-458 ff. 242-353

There are quire signatures in Greek numerals at the beginning of each quire, in brown ink, recto, upper right, in a sequence in which the first surviving quire would have borne the the number 2, reflecting the loss of the first original quire. Some have been lost to cropping or faded into illegibility. They survive in whole or in part on Quires 2-13, 15, 17-18, 20-36, 38, 40 (γʹ-ιδʹ, ιηʹ-ιθʹ, καʹ-λζʹ, λθʹ, μαʹ). There are also quire signatures in Arabic numerals at the beginning of each quire, in pencil, recto, lower right, beginning from the number 1. They survive on all quires (1-45).

Condition

The outer margins of ff. 139, 267, 277 and 288 have been cut away. Tears have developed along ruling lines in some folios (e.g. ff. 274, 276, 278-279, 281, 301, 303). There are occasional small tears to the edge of folios, some of which have been repaired with Japanese paper, and a few small holes. There is water staining and areas of dirt, and there has been abrasion of the ink in places (e.g. ff. 1r, 2r, 345v-364r, 353v).

Layout

Two columns of 29 lines. 85 × 54 mm. Pricking sometimes survives in the lower margin, but much has been lost to cropping. Ruled in hardpoint, system Leroy 1, type Leroy 01C2c. Text sometimes hangs from the lines and is sometimes written along them.

Hand(s)

The original portion of the manuscript was copied by Hand A in Mi-Fettaugen-style mixed minuscule script, in brown ink, with significant variation in letter size and some flourishing of tails into the margin.

Syllabic abbreviations and superscript word endings appear only at the end of lines. Breathings are both angular and round and mute iota is usually absent but occasionally adscript (e.g. f. 60v, col. a, line 6). Use of the double dot is functional only. Accents are sometimes joined to abbreviations.

The flat-bottomed omega is present, often tapering to an angle at the right-hand side. The loop of alpha is often very long and narrow. There are inclusions of letters within omega.

Punctuation used includes the lower, middle and upper points, lower comma and full stop.

Decoration

Sections begin with simple minor initials in red ink.

Additions

Occasional scholia have been added in the margins, notably on ff. 73r, 300v-301r, 302v-303v, 306v-308v, 310r-310v, by a 12th-century hand.

A later hand has added folio numbers to the texts on ff. 4r-24v, using the extant foliation in Greek numerals to indicate where texts cited here appear in this manuscript.

Running headers in Greek indicating the current text have been added in the upper margins of recto folios, ff. 25r-342r.

There are other occasional brief marginal annoations in Greek , by various hands (e.g. ff. 60r, 106r, 235v).

There is a modern note in English on f. 353r, regarding anomalies in the pagination.
