Physical Description
Collation
The manuscript consists of 21 quires, all quaternia.
- Quire 18-2 ff. 1-6 The first and last folios have been lost, with loss of text.
- Quires 2-108 ff. 7-78
- Quire 118-3 ff. 79-84 The original sixth and seventh folios have been lost, as has most of the third, with loss of text. The surviving leaves have been bound out of order. The original order was ff. 80-82, 79, 84, two lost folios, f. 83.
- Quires 12-208 ff. 85-156
- Quire 218-4 ff. 157-160 The first, third, sixth and eighth folios have been lost, with loss of text.
There are orignal quire signatures in Greek numerals, in black ink, on the first folio of each quire, recto, lower left, and the last folio of each quire, verso, lower right. The first three quires have been lost, so the numbers of these signatures are always larger than their actual place in the present sequence by three. They survive on Quires 2-20 (εʹ-κγʹ).
Modern quire signatures in Arabic numerals, in pencil, have been added to the first folio of each quire, recto, lower right. These number the quires according to the present state of the manuscript.
Condition
Layout
A single column of 24-27 lines. 110 × 100 mm. Pricking sometimes survives on all three edges, but some has been lost to cropping. Ruled in hardpoint, system Leroy 1, type Leroy 00C1. Text hangs from the lines.
Hand(s)
The main text has been copied by Hand A in an upright scribal Mi-Fettaugen mixed minuscule script, in black ink. There is significant variation in letter size and frequent flourishing of tails into the margins.
Syllabic abbreviations and superscript word endings appear throughout the line. Breathings are round or occasionally angular, and mute iota is absent or adscript. There is occasional decorative use of the double dot, and accentuation of all nomina sacra . Accents are sometimes joined to letters and breathings. The double grave accent is in use.
The modern eta and flat-bottomed omega are present, and there are inclusions of letters within omicron. Lines joining a letter, particularly alpha and rho, to the following letter, are sometimes greatly elongated.
Punctuation used includes the middle and upper points, lower and middle commas, question mark and full stop.
This hand has also provided the rubric, in red ink in a similar style, sometimes including the opening phrases of the text of hypotheses as well as the conventional heading.
Subscriptions and some headings and incipits have been addd by Hand B in an upright scribal mixed minuscule script making containing a large proportion of majuscule letters, in red ink.
Syllabic abbreviations and superscript word endings appear throughout the line. Breathings are round or occasionally angular, and mute iota is absent. There is occasional decorative use of the double dot, and accentuation of all nomina sacra .
The modern eta is present.
Punctuation used includes the middle and upper points, lower and middle commas and full stop.
Some headings has been written by the same hand in epigraphic display majuscule script, in red ink, distinguishing these from the rubricated incipit.
Decoration
The text of each book or hypothesis and of various subsections within these begin with a minor initial in red ink.
Additions
Occasional marginal lection notes and other annotations in Greek have been added by various later hands (e.g. ff. 55r, 84r, 94v). These include the name Demetrios Batas (‘Διμιτρις του Βατα’) on f. 141v, which may be an indication of ownership.
An ownership note has been added on f. 1r by Kosmas Phrochmos (or Phromchos): ‘Κοσμᾶ Φρομχου κήρυκος εὐαγγελικου’.
Another hand has added in the margins of f. 76r the text of Romans 11:22-29, which had been omitted by the copyist.
Notes in Latin have been added regarding lost or incorrectly bound folios.
A note of the contents in Latin has been added on f. iv verso, with an addition by another hand, who also added the initials C.B.S. to this folio.
The ownership note ‘Jo. Luke’ has been added to the left pastedown.
Binding
Full leather binding over couched-laminate boards, with an 18th-century pale brown leather spine and reused 17th-century boards, with dark brown leather covering and plain pastedowns. There is decorative gold tooling on the outer surface and edges of the boards, and on the spine. The classmark is tooled in gold on the spine, along with the title ‘Act. Apost. &c. M.C.’ on a label. The edges have been painted black.
172 × 145 × 58 mm.
There is a break in each endband.
History
Provenance and Acquisition
Possibly owned by Demetrios Batas
Owned by Kosmas Phrochmos (or Phromchos)
Owned by John Luke (1634-1702) , Professor of Arabic at Cambridge.
A certain date of accession is not known, however the manuscript is first recorded among the collections of Cambridge University Library in a catalogue compiled in 1754-56 by Thomas Goodall (now Cambridge, University Library, MS Oo.7.53-55). It may have been part of the collection as early as 1706-07, as suggested by the general bookplate on the left pastedown, which was first adopted in that year.
