Medieval Manuscripts in Cambridge Libraries

A catalogue of Western manuscripts and papyri at Cambridge University Library, the Fitzwilliam Museum and selected Cambridge colleges

Cambridge, University Library, MS Dd.11.54

Diktyon no.: Diktyon 12170

Contents

Introduction: This manuscript comprises two parts, both written on paper but unreleated to one other, containing mainly texts by Lucian, Libanius, Severus Alexandrinus, Aelius Aristides and Pseudo-Nonnos' commentaries on Gregory of Nazianzus. Dr Matteo Di Franco

Language(s): Greek

Physical Description

Form: codex
Extent: Codex: iii + ii + 133 + i + iii leaves. 152-180 × 110-130 mm.
Foliation: 1-3 + 4-5 + 6-90 | 91-138 + 139 + 140-142. Modern foliation in pencil in Arabic numerals in the top right-hand corner, recto, from the first endleaf.
Foliation: Seventeenth-century brown ink pagination, in all likelihood written by J.-B. Hautin, beginning from f. 6r in Arabic numerals in the top right-hand corner, recto, coinciding with the beginning of a new item. The index on ff. 5v and 139r corresponds to this pagination.

Collation

The fragile condition of the book, the tightness of the binding, and the loss of some leaves do not allow the number of quires to be determined accurately.

Condition

In poor condition, with large spots, tears, and wormholes, paper edges are very soft and wrinkled; the text is illegible at various points, in both parts. Prior to recent conservation, the front board had become detached. A small scrap of paper that became detached from one of the leaves has been rehoused in melinex, and is kept at the front of the volume.

Binding

Binding with pale brown full leather covering over couched-laminate boards. The right board is loose, the left board is detached. There is decorative blind tooling on boards and board edges, gold tooling on spine.

The title (Lucianus &C. M.S.) is tooled in gold on the spine.

White paper is used as pastedowns with blank endleaves.

189 × 140 × 45 mm.

History

Provenance and Acquisition

This manuscript was part of the library of Cardinal Niccolò Ridolfi (1501-1550) : on f. 6v Ridolfi's designation is preserved (‘ nº 40 ’).

Part of the estate of the Queen of France, Catherine de Medici (see Muratore (2009)).

Apparently removed from the French Royal collection before 1622 (when Nicolas Rigault compiled his catalogue).

Probably removed by the numismatist and Rigault's collaborator Jean-Baptiste Hautin (1580?-1640) (some of whose manuscripts are known to have entered the collection of John Moore, but see Acquisition).

A certain date of accession is not known, however the manuscript is first recorded among the collections of Cambridge University Library in a catalogue compiled in 1754-56 by Thomas Goodall (now Cambridge, University Library, MS Oo.7.53-55). The manuscript may have belonged to John Moore (1646-1714) , bishop of Ely, and it contains the donation bookplate engraved by John Pine (1690-1756) in 1736, in commemoration of the purchase and donation of Moore's library by George I (1660-1727) (left pastedown). However, it has not been possible to identify this manuscript among Moore's collections as recorded in Bernard, Catalogi librorum manuscriptorum Angliæ et Hiberniæ (c. 1697) or in the handwritten supplementary list of Moore's manuscripts (now MS Oo.7.50(2)) compiled by Thomas Tanner (1674-1735) after its publication, and these bookplates are not wholly reliable guides to a manuscript's provenance and acquisition.

Contents

Introduction: The first part contains several texts by the Greek authors Lucian (ca. 125 - post 180 CE), Libanius (ca. 314-392/393 CE), Severus Alexandrinus (4th century CE) and a text by Aelius Aristides (118-181 CE). It is a non-homogeneous collection of rhetorical declamation (known as meletai) and examples from the Second Sophistic. The texts are copied by one hand, and marginal notes, glosses, variants and scholia are frequently added by subsequent hands. The main text is preceded on ff. 6r-6v by fragments and notes of various types. A later hand added at the incipit of each text a reference (e.g. ‘Lucian. p. 64’), with correspondence with the edition of Jean Bourdelot (Paris 1615) for Lucian, of Paul Estienne (Geneva 1604) for Aelius Aristides, of Fédéric Morel Le Jeune (Paris 1606 and 1627) for Libanius. The manuscript has the siglum Ca in Foerster's edition of Progymnasmata of Libanius (vol. VIII, 1915), and F in the edition of Severus Alexandrinus by E. Amato (2009).

Physical Description

Form: codex
Support: ff. 6r-90v cotton paper, folded in quarto.

Condition

In poor general condition. Leaves have yellowed with age; large spots, tears, and wormholes; paper edges are very soft and crumpled.

Layout

ff. 6r-90v, written space 130-145 × 95-100 mm.

Hand(s)

Hand A-E: ff. 6r-6v

The extracts and short texts on ff. 6r-6v are written in mixed minuscules by five different hands: A f. 6r ll. 1-19, 6v l. 1-4; B f. 6r ll. 20-31; C f. 6v ll. 5-15, D f. 6v ll. 16-17; E f. 6v ll. 18-19.

Hand F: ff. 7r-90v

The core of the manuscript part is written in a informal mixed minuscule upright or slanting slightly to the right, in brown, dark brown, and black inks, with titles and initials in red ink.

This hand shows variations of ductus and density of text, so that it appears ordered in some parts and disordered in others. It is distinguished by a marked variation in letter size and several majuscule letters (beta, gamma, delta, eta, kappa, lambda, pi, phi), often enlarged, as well as the omega. The majuscule beta has has a bilobated shape along with a heart-like shape. Tau and gamma are often high. The iota mutum is rarely used. The ligatures are frequent, and those with tau and rho are overlapping.

Syllabic abbreviations and superscript word endings usually appear only at the end of lines, but occasionally elsewhere.

Decoration

The thick red-ink major initials mark the start of a new work from f. 7r.

History

Origin: The characteristics of the scripts suggest that the manuscript part was produced between the end 14th and the beginning of 15th century.

Part 2 [Cambridge, University Library, MS Dd.11.54, ff. 91r-138v]

Contents

Introduction: The second part of the manuscript consists of a non-uniform collection of commentaries to Gregory of Nazianzus, texts of linguistic theory and other themes. Originating before the first part, it contains erasures and shows no aesthetic intent.
