Contents

Introduction: The manuscript contains a late-15th-century copy of the first 18 Idylls of the bucolic poet Theocritus of Syracuse (ca. 300-260 BCE). The idylls are preceded by the hypothesis, and the first five are accompanied by surrounding scholia from ancient and Byzantine sources, and interlinear glosses. After the introductory material on Theocritus, there follows the Syrinx, (Panpipe) part of the Carmina figurata Graeca or Technopaegnia, a group of poems whose lines form shapes on the page. The poem is accompanied by scholia and an epigram falsely attributed in the Anthologia Graeca to the philosopher Plato. The manuscript seems to have been designed with care and aesthetic intent, but does not appear to have been completed because only idylls 2-5 are accompanied by rubrics and decorated initials; in the others, space has been left for decorated initials that were never added. On all the folios, moreover, the ruling for the missing scholia has been traced. From a textual point of view, the manuscript was traced by Gallavotti (19933) to the genus Vallianum, on which the editio princeps depends.

Physical Description

Form: codex
Support: Non-watermarked paper, folded in small folio.
Extent: Codex: iii + 55 + ii leaves. 290 × 250 mm.
Foliation: i-ii + 1-55 + iii-iv. Modern foliation in pencil in Arabic numerals in the top right-hand corner, recto.

Collation

The manuscript consists of seven quaternions.

  • Quires 1-68 ff. 1r-48v
  • Quire 78-1 ff. 49r-55v

Quire signatures in pencil, in Arabic numerals from 2 (f. 9r) to 7 (f. 49r), on lower margin of the first folio recto of quires 2-7. Vertical catchwords by the scribe on f. 8v, and f. 48v partially lost in trimming.

Condition

In generally fair condition.

Layout

ff. 1r-51v: A single column of 19-20 lines. 165 × 95 mm. Surrounding scholia that accompany the main texts have a very variable number of lines per page. The ruling for the main text and the scholia is traced and visible on all the folios.

Hand(s)

The manuscript is written in a mixed minuscule by a practised hand with claim to aesthetic effect, in black ink, with modest variation in letter size.

In the main text syllabic abbreviations are mostly limited to καὶ and prepositions. Breathings are curved and mostly not joined to accents; circumflex accent is linear, the acute accent is inclined and slightly curved, similar to the circumflex, almost vertical the grave accent. The accent are often ligated to alpha, ypsilon and omega. Isolated trema is sometimes traced over iota and ypsilon; mute iota is present but not always used.

The handwriting is characterized by an alpha traced in two strokes, a small beta in bilobate shape, high gamma and majuscule lambda lightly inclined and wide, with curved elongated stroke if ligated.

Ligatures with alpha and lambda are traced from below, those with rho always with the preceding letter.

Punctuation used includes the middle and upper point, lower comma and full stop.

The same hand has added the rubrics and interlinear glosses in red ink, as well as the surrounding scholia in the same script but with greater use of syllabic abbreviations and superscript letter endings. Headings in epigraphic display majuscule are added on f. 3r.

Decoration
