A catalogue of Western manuscripts and papyri at Cambridge University Library, the Fitzwilliam Museum and selected Cambridge colleges

Cambridge, University Library, MS Dd.6.18

Diktyon no.: Diktyon 12161

Contents

Introduction: This manuscript, copied in England in the late 17th century, contains a collection of brief Byzantine and patristic religious texts and excerpts, whose concerns include theological disputes and ecclesiastical organisation and appointments. It forms part of a two-volume set, of which the other is MS Dd.6.19, copied by the same hand, which contains primarily theological texts, along with historical, geographical and scientific works. In a number of cases the source manuscripts from which these texts were copied are identified, in all cases belonging to the Barocci collection of the Bodleian Library in Oxford. Alternate pages have been left blank, perhaps with the intention of adding a facing translation which was never accomplished. The written pages are divided into two columns, of which one contains the text and the other notes on it. The person responsible for copying the manuscript was probably one R. Ray, the scholar at Trinity College whose ownership note, dated to 1693 and identical to a note in Dd.6.19, appears on f. 1r. This Ray currently remains unidentified, and no such person appears among the Fellows listed in Hugh MacLeod Innes, Fellows of Trinity College Cambridge (Cambridge, 1941). He may have been a relative of John Ray (or Wray), a notable scholar and Fellow of Trinity in the mid-17th century. Dr Christopher Wright

Physical Description

Form: codex
Support: Given the manner in which different types of paper are interspersed within quires, it often cannot be reliably determined to which type leaves without watermarks belong, and this reconstruction is in part conjectural. ff. 1-7, 15, 17-21, 25, 29, 41-45, 48-49, 53-54, 56, 58-59, 61 Western paper, folded in quarto. Watermark: Foolscap ( c. 100 × 35 mm. ) in the gutter, similar but not identical to Heawood 2071, 2077. These examples are dated to 1705. ff. 8-14, 16, 22-24, 26-28, 30-40, 46, 50-52 Western paper, folded in quarto. Watermark: Coat of arms ( c. 65 × 45 mm. ) in the gutter, similar to Heawood 456, 458-460, 473, but including only the main motif without countermarks. These examples are dated to 1670-1713. ff. 47, 55, 57, 60 Western paper, folded in quarto. Watermark: Letters (RB) ( c. 20 × 30 mm. ) in the gutter.
Extent: Codex: 61 leaves. 201 × 152 mm.
Foliation: The manuscript is foliated with the numbers 1-61, in pencil, in Arabic numerals, recto, upper right, apart from ff. 1-2, where the folio number appears in the lower right.

Collation

The manuscript consists of 8 quires, of which one is a ternion, three are quaternia and four are quinia.

  • Quire 18-2 ff. 1-6 The first and third folios have been cancelled, without loss of text.
  • Quire 210-1 ff. 7-15 The sixth folio has been cancelled, without loss of text.
  • Quire 38-1 ff. 16-22 The fifth folio has been cancelled, without loss of text.
  • Quire 410-2 ff. 24-30 The fifth and tenth folios have been cancelled, without loss of text.
  • Quire 510-1 ff. 31-39 The sixth folio has been cancelled, without loss of text.
  • Quire 68-1 ff. 40-46 The fifth folio has been cancelled, without loss of text.
  • Quire 710 ff. 47-55
  • Quire 86 ff. 56-61

Condition

There is pest damage to the lower edge of the first few folios (left pastedown-f. 5) and occasional staining and areas of dirt.

Layout

Two columns of 21-32 lines. The main text appears in the inner column, notes on content and emendations in the narrower outer column. Alternate folios are ruled but blank, perhaps intended for a translation. 155 × 120 mm. Margins and column division ruled in pencil.

Hand(s)

The manuscript was copied, probably by R. Ray, in a western European mixed minuscule script imitating early printing.

Additions

An ownership note dated 1693 has been added on f. 1r: ‘R: Ray. C.T.C. 1693’, together with the classmark.

Numbers in brown ink occasionally appear on the recto, upper right, some of which have been partially lost to cropping: 9 on f. 16r, 19 on f. 24r, 33 (?) on f. 40r, 42 on f. 48r.

Otherr numbers in pencil occasionally appear on the recto, lower right: 11 on f. 18r, 25 on f. 25r, 21 on f. 28r, 31 on f. 38r, 41 on f. 48r, 50 on f. 50r, 45 on f. 52r, 61 on f. 61r.

Binding

17th-century full leather binding, with decorative blind tooling on both board and gold tooling on the spine and edges. The classmark appears on labels on the spine.

205 × 161 × 19 mm.

Both outer joints are partially split.

History

Origin: The manuscript was copied in the second half of the 17th century, before 1693, as indicated by the watermarks and the ownership note on f. 1r. The early owner recorded by this note, R. Ray, a student or fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge, may well have copied it himself for his own use. In any case it was produced in ; England, as indicated by its English watermark.

Provenance and Acquisition

Possibly presented in 1715 by George I , as part of the collection of John Moore (b. 1646, d. 1714), bishop of Ely . This is suggested by the presence inside the left board of the bookplate used for this collection. However, this bookplate was sometimes incorrectly placed in manuscripts which did not belong to this collection, and this manuscript is not recorded as part of it in Bernard, Catalogi librorum manuscriptorum Angliæ et Hiberniæ (1697), nor in the handwritten supplementary list of Moore’s manuscripts, now MS Oo.7.50(2), compiled by Thomas Tanner .
