Physical Description
Binding
17th-century full leather binding over couched-laminate boards, with Latin manuscript waste pastedowns. There is decorative blind tooling on the boards. Rebacked in the 19th century, with gold tooling on the spine, along with the author's name ‘Maximus’ and the classmark tooled in gold.
The binding has been rebacked, both outer joints are partially split and the right board has damaged corners, where leather covering has been lost and the boards are delaminating. The headband is damaged and has been partially lost.
335 × 252 × 64 mm.
Accompanying Material
A parchment strip of manuscript waste bearing medieval Latin text in black and red ink has been used in the attachment of the reused parchment endleaf f. iv.
Following the reused parchment endleaf f. i, are two paper endleaves, ff. ii-iii. On f. ii recto is a Latin note on 17th-century editions of the contents. This is followed by a copy of the note on f. i, regarding the chronology of imperial reigns, by a different hand.
On f. iii verso is a Latin note on the item of content on ff. 121v-125r.

Condition
Layout
A single column of 49-72 lines. Passages of commentary appear in the margins. The text on f. 189r-189v is arranged in a cross-shaped pattern. 252 × 160 mm. Pricking survives in the outer and lower margins, but some has been lost to cropping. Ruled in hardpoint, system Leroy 1, type Leroy 10C1. Text hangs from or is written along the lines.
Hand(s)
The main body of the manuscript, including the marginal commentary, was copied by Hand A in a mixed minuscule script with variable slant, in brown ink. There is significant variation in letter-size, mainly at the end of lines, and much flourishing of tails into the margins. There are deletions by erasure.
Syllabic abbreviations and superscript word endings appear throughout the line. Breathings are round and mute iota is absent or subscript. There is decorative use of the double dot, and accentuation of all nomina sacra . Accents are sometimes joined to letters, breathings, abbreviations and nomina sacra strokes. The double grave accent and marginal quotation marks are in use.
The modern eta and modern nu are present, and there is inclusion of letters within omicron and occasionally omega.
Punctuation used includes the middle and upper points, lower and middle commas and full stop.
Headings are in the same style in orange ink.
Items of marginal commentary are linked to the corresponding point in the main text by reference marks in orange or bright red ink.
Decoration
Texts and sections begin with minor initials in orange ink, and subsections in some texts begin with enlarged letters in red ink within the body of the text.
Some texts are preceded by simple vignettes in red or orange ink.
Small pieces of marginal ornament mark the beginning of some texts (e.g. ff. 155r, 160v, 165v).
Additions
As part of the original production of the manuscript, besides the marginal commentary, there are occasional ση(μεῖωσαι) marks indicating notable passages. The texts on ff. 153r-189v are provided with marginal subsection numbers in red ink.
There are occasional later marginal annotations in Greek, notably astrological notes added to f. 148v.
Folio numbers have been added to the table of contents on f. 1r
