Medieval Manuscripts in Cambridge Libraries

A catalogue of Western manuscripts and papyri at Cambridge University Library, the Fitzwilliam Museum and selected Cambridge colleges

Cambridge, University Library, MS Add. 7593

Diktyon no.: Diktyon 12143

Contents

Introduction: This manuscript, probably produced during the 13th or early 14th century, is a Menologion for November, a liturgical book containing the hagiographical texts to be read in church during that month, including Lives of Saints, martyrdom narratives and accounts regarding relics and posthumous miracles. Most of the texts in this volume are the work of Symeon Metaphrastes, or Symeon the Metaphrast, a 10th-century Byzantine civil official and later a monk. He rewrote numerous existing hagiographical texts in a more accessible style and compiled these into a new menologion. The term Metaphrast refers to this practice of rewriting. Symeon's versions of these stories became the most widely used, superseding those read previously. The main body of the manuscript, written on Eastern paper, contains texts for the feasts from 20 to 30 November. It evidently lost some folios at the end quite early in its history, as the last original quire is incomplete and the remainder of the last text has been supplied by replacement folios copied by a different hand and written on Western paper, whose watermarks and script place it in the earlier decades of the 14th century. Further folios of similar date, but written by two different hands on two different papers, have also been added to the beginning of the manuscript. The content of these pertains to the feasts falling on 17 and 18 November, and is therefore appropriately positioned in sequence with the main body. In the standard organisation of the metaphrastic menologion, the fourth volume normally contained the texts for 17-30 November. However, it seems that this these folios were not, as at the other end of the manuscript, replacements for lost originals. The sequence of quire signatures, which appear to be in the hand of the original scribe, begins with the first existing quire of the main body, while the heading to the opening text names the month, whereas those for all subsequent texts merely give the day as "in the same month" (‘μηνὶ τῷ αὐτῷ’). This indicates that the text for 20 November was originally the first. It therefore seems that this manuscript and any companion volumes did not follow the typical arrangement, and that the additional folios at the front of the manuscript were not replacements but part of an expansion to bring the manuscript's content into line with what would usually be expected. A number of these additional folios have since been lost. Another peculiarity is that the current f. 157, although it appears to be the work of the principal scribe, seems to be a replacement for an original folio which was cut out, pasted onto the residual stub. This was perhaps due to some deficiency or damage sustained at any early stage. Oddly, however, the folio contains less text than normal: the script is larger, the number of lines is smaller and there is a substantial amount of space left blank on the verso. The reason for this can only be a matter of speculation. It could be that the scribe had erroneously copied a passage twice, or reproduced such an error in the exemplar, and this intervention was later made to eliminate the duplicate content, leaving a smaller than usual amount of text to fill the replacement folio, which was therefore stretched to fill more space, but still did not cover the whole of the usual written area. The manuscript retains a binding in the medieval Greek style, which must have been made subsequent to the insertion of the additional and replacement folios. Much of its covering material has been lost, but some of the blind-tooled decoration can still be seen. The motifs include the fleur-de-lys and the imperial double-headed eagle. Physical Description

Form: codex
Extent: Codex: 228 leaves.
Foliation: The manuscript is foliated with the numbers 1-165, 165 bis, 166-169, 169 bis, 170-189, 189 bis-199, 199 bis, 200-201, 201 bis, 202-217, [217a], 218-223, in pencil, in Arabic numerals, recto, upper right. Most of f. 165 bis was formerly detached and bears the folio number 220, having presumably been inserted previously after f. 219. It has since been reattached in its correct location after f. 165 and the former folio number struck through and replaced. ff. 169 bis and 189 bis are stubs with a small amount of surviving text, which were originally omitted from the foliation sequence but have since been numbered (a similar stub survives following f. 217v, here designated f. [217a], but this has not been foliated). The present ff. 219-223 were formerly numbered 221-225, but these numbers have been struck out and replaced. This change is evidently due in part to the relocation of the former f. 220, now f. 165 bis, but it is not clear whether the number 219 pertained to another folio, now lost, or if this number was omitted from the sequence.

Collation

Part I consists of 1 quire, Part II of 1, Part III of 29, Part IV of 1: 11, 23, 36-1, 4-158, 168-1, 17-268, 278-1, 288-1, 298, 306, 318-5, 326-1

Condition

Most of ff. 169 bis, 189 and 217a has been lost, as has about half of f. 223 and small portions of some other folios. Most of f. 165 bis had also become detached, but has been reattached. There is pest damage, often extensive, throughout the manuscript. There are tears extending most of the way across f. 1, which have been repaired with Japanese paper. Some damage was repaired with paper patches, and there have been other modern repairs with Japanese paper. There is extensive water staining, drops of wax and areas of dirt. The paper has become soft, and there is wear and tear to the edges.

Additions

There is a note of ownership by Gabriel Dokyanis on the left pastedown: ‘Εροδιακονο Γαβρηλυ Διμιτρίου Δοκυανις καί τον τεκνο αυτου’.

Binding

14th- or 15th-century Greek binding.

Sewn on five stations prepared with v-notches. Sewing is an unsupported loop-stitch with an S-twist sewing thread.

Classic Greek endbands with wound cream threads around two cord cores, extending to approximately 1/5 of the board. The thread is passed diagonally around the lower core and wraps vertically around the upper core. A few tailband threads are broken.

One transverse continuous textile lining extending to approximately 1/5 of the board. The endband tiedowns pass through the cloth.

Laid-paper endleaves. The left endleaves are made of one pastedown sewn through a stub. A separate small piece of paper is visible and also sewn, which might suggest the previous presence of another bifolio now lost. The right endleaves consist of one pastedown with a small stub hooked around the last gathering and tipped to the penultimate gathering.

Board attachment is bridling passing from the outside face of the board to the inner face and then back out.

Wooden boards. The boards are shaped at the spine edge both inside and outside of the board. The inside of the board creates a gentle curve to the spine; the outside edge of the board is rounded. Channels have been cut outside and inside the boards to accommodate the sewing threads.

Full covering of dark brown tanned skin.

There is a metallic pin in the centre of the left board foredge, and remnants of straps (peg, cord and red thread) are visible in the inner side of the right board.

Blind tooling with the use of intaglio tools. Both boards seem to have had the same tooled design. Quadruple fillets intersect creating a diamond shape, with intaglio floral tools on the fillets. Lozenges containing fleurs-de-lys and roundels containing floral and zoomorphic designs are tooled on the intersecting points. A yellow modern round sticker is stuck on the spine tail.

The leather tab of a page-marker survives on f. 135.

334 × 252 × 83 mm.

Much of the covering material has been lost. There is extensive pest damage to the cover and both boards.

Accompanying Material

Labels are pasted to the left pastedown, with the name of D. S. Robertson and a note of donation to Cambridge University Library: ‘From the Library of Professor D. S. Robertson. Presented by his sons.’

The manuscript is accompanied by a number of scraps of paper formerly belonging to it, including the corner of a folio bearing text by Hand A, belonging to the folio formerly preceding f. 1, otherwise now lost. This belongs to the same text as the surviving folio copied by this hand, f. 1r-1v: Gregory of Nyssa, De vita Gregorii Thaumaturgi, at PG 46, coll. 913, 916.

There are also a number of notes and letters by modern scholars regarding the manuscript kept with it.

Physical Description

Form: codex
Support: Eastern paper
Extent: 316 × 230 mm.

Collation

This part consists of 29 quires, of which two are ternia and the rest are quaternia.

  • Quire 36-1 ff. 5-9 The first folio has been lost or cancelled
  • Quires 4-158 ff. 10-105
  • Quire 168-1 ff. 106-112 The fourth folio has been lost, with loss of text
  • Quires 17-268 ff. 113-189 bis The fifth folio of Quire 23 (157v) was apparently cancelled and a replacement leaf pasted onto the stub and copied by the original scribe.
  • Quire 278-1 ff. 190-196 The third folio has been lost, with loss of text
  • Quire 288-1 ff. 197-201 bis The fourth folio has been lost, with loss of text
  • Quire 298 ff. 202-209
  • Quire 306 ff. 210-215
  • Quire 318-5 ff. 216-218 The third-fourth and sixth-eighth folios have been lost, with loss of text

There are original quire signatures in Greek numerals, in black ink, on the first folio of each quire, recto, lower left, and the last folio of each quire, verso, lower left. The sequence begins from the first quire of this part. Many have been wholly or partially lost to cropping. They survive on Quires 3, 10, 14, 17-19, 21-28 (γʹ, ιʹ, ιδʹ, ιζʹ-ιθʹ, καʹ-κηʹ), and there are traces on Quires 1-2, 4-9, 11, 15-16, 20, 29.

Layout

Two columns of 32 lines each. 234 × 135 mm.

Hand(s)

ff. 5r-218v were copied by Hand C in mixed minuscule script, slanting slightly to the right, in black ink, with modest variation in letter size.

Syllabic abbreviations and superscript word endings appear only at the end of lines. Breathings are round, and mute iota is absent. There is decorative use of the double dot, and accentuation of all lengths of nomina sacra . The double grave accent is in use.

Punctuation used includes the lower, middle and upper points, question mark and full stop.

Headings were written in the same style in red ink.

Decoration

The beginning of the text on f. 5r is preceded by a rectangular headpiece, part of which is in red ink and part in black ink with red infill. The texts beginning on ff. 12r and 125r are preceded by simple, crudely drawn rectangular headpieces in red ink. At the beginning of the other texts (e.g. ff. 50v, 63v) there are rectangular borders of the same size and style, containing the date of the relevant feast-day.

The beginning of sections is marked by small minor initials in red ink. Texts begin with larger, slightly ornamented initials in red ink.

Additions

As part of the original production of the manuscript, the scribe has written the date of each feast in the margin at the beginning of each text, in those cases where it has not been written within the headpiece border (ff. 5r, 12r, 125r).

A later hand has added marginal notes at the beginning of each text, giving the number of folios comprising it.

History

Origin: The characteristics of the script suggest that the main body of the manuscript was copied in the 13th or early 14th century, as suggested by the style of script.

Hand(s)

f. 219r-223r were written by Hand D in mixed minuscule script with variable slant, in black ink, with modest variation in letter size.

Syllabic abbreviations appear only at the end of lines, but superscript word endings appear throughout the line. Breathings are round and mute iota is subscript. There is decorative use of the double dot, and accentuation of all lengths of nomina sacra . Accents are sometimes joined to letters, abbreviations and nomina sacra strokes. The double grave accent is in use.

The sigma telikon is present. Majuscule beta often appears in a large and bulbous form.

Punctuation used includes the middle and upper points, lower and middle commas and full stop.

Additions

There is a marginal note on f. 219r, the early part of which appears to have been lost to cropping. The surviving portion reads ‘καλὸν χάρτι’

There is a note on a repair patch on f. 223v, which has largely been lost to subsequent damage. The surviving portion reads ‘τοῦ διακο’. This was possibly an ownership note.

History

Origin: This part was probably added to the manuscript to replace losses, and produced in the first half of the 14th century, as suggested by the watermark and the style of script.
