Physical Description
Collation
The manuscript consists of 31 quires, of which 28 are quaternia, while 3 are composed of pairs of original quires joined together. Of these six former quires, one is a quaternion, one is made up of three separate folios joined toether, and each of the rest of two separate folios joined together. The signatures indicate that two more quires have been lost at the beginning, one after f. 234 and one after f. 246.
- Quire 18-5 ff. 19-23 The first, third, fourth, fifth and eighth folios have been lost, with loss of text.
- Quires 2-118 ff. 25-104
- Quire 128-1 ff. 105-112 The second folio has been lost, with loss of text.
- Quire 138-4 ff. 113-116 The first, third, fifth and seventh folios have been cancelled, without loss of text. These cancellations were apparently made before the quire was ruled, as the ruling system accords with the present rather than the original structure of the quire.
- Quires 14-208 ff. [117]-172
- Quire 213+2 ff. 173-189 This quire has been assembled out of physically disparate folios, formerly grouped as two separate quires, made up of the first-third and fourth-fifth folios of the present quire. The text proceeds continuously. The first folio (f. 173) is a single leaf, copied by Hand B, and bears the quire signature 23 (κγʹ). The second and third folios are single leaves copied by Hand C (ff. 174-175). The fourth and fifth folios (ff. 182 and f. 189) were copied by Hand A. The fourth and fifth are attached to one another by means of a parchment strip wrapped around them and pasted to them. The original text on ff. 182r and 189v has been written across this strip, indicating that it was added during the production of the manuscript. The fourth folio bears the quire signature 24 (κδʹ), written on this strip. A further strip, one side of which protrudes between f. 173 and f. 174, was wrapped around the second-fifth folios of the present composite quire and these stitched together along with the first.
- Quires 22-238 ff. 190-205
- Quire 2410-2 ff. 206-213 The second and eighth folios have been cancelled, without loss of text.
- Quire 258-3 ff. 214-218 The last three folios have been cancelled, without loss of text.
- Quire 268 ff. 219-226
- Quire 278-2 ff. 227-234 The fourth and fifth folios have been lost, with loss of text.
- Quire 282+2 ff. 243-246 This quire has been assembled out of physically disparate folios, formerly grouped as two separate quires, made up of the first-second and third-fourth folios of the present quire. The text proceeds continuously. The first and second folios (ff. 243-244) are single leaves joined to each other only by stitching. The first folio bears the quire signature 32 (λβʹ). The third and fourth folios (ff. 245-246) are attached to one another by means of a parchment strip wrapped around them and pasted to them. The third folio bears the quire signature 33 (λγʹ), written on this strip. A further strip of parchment was wrapped around the thrird and fourth folios and pasted to the second, and all four stitched together.
- Quire 298 ff. 247-254
- Quire 3010 (8+2) ff. 255-264 This quire has been assembled out of two separate quires, made up of the first-second and third-tenth folios of the present quire. The text proceeds continuously. The first and second folios (ff. 255-256) are attached to one another by means of a parchment strip wrapped around them and pasted to them, further secured to the first folio by stitching. The first folio bears the quire signature 36 (λϛʹ), written on this strip. In places the strip overlays the text, indicating that it was attached after this was copied. Part of a letter protrudes from beneath it near the quire signature, perhaps part of a signature marked on the quire before the strip was attached. The third-eighth folios form a quaternion. The third folio bears the quire signature 37 (λζʹ). The two parts of the the quire are joined by stitching.
- Quire 318 ff. 265-272
Condition
Layout
A single column of 32 lines. 246 × 180 mm. Pricking survives to all three edges, but some has been lost to cropping. Ruled in hardpoint, system Leroy 1, type Leroy 34C2. Text hangs from the lines.
Hand(s)
ff. 19r-116v, 182r-218v and 244r-256v were copied by Hand A, in upright mixed minuscule script similar to Perlschrift, in brown ink, with little variation in letter size.
Syllabic abbreviations appear only at the end of lines and superscript word endings are not in use. Breathings are both angular (including the half-H form) and round. Mute iota is usually absent but occasionally adscript (e.g. f. 198v, col. a, line 15). Use of the double dot is functional only. Nomina sacra are accentuated only when at least four letters long or with enclitics. Accents are small, even when the circumflex appears over breathings. The double grave accent and marginal quotation marks are in use. Tails into the lower margin are occasionally decorated with cross-marks.
Punctuation marks present include the lower, middle and upper points, lower comma, question mark and full stop.
Headings for texts were written in Alexandrine majuscule script in red ink and gilded. Headings for the date of each feast were written in the margins in epigraphic display majuscule in red ink and gilded.
ff. [117]r-173v were copied by Hand B, in upright mixed minuscule script, in brown ink, with modest variation in letter size.
Syllabic abbreviations appear only at the end of lines and superscript word endings are not in use. Breathings are round and mute iota is usually absent but occasionally adscript (e.g. f. 172r, col. b, line 11). Use of the double dot is functional only. Nomina sacra are accentuated only when at least four letters long or with enclitics. Accents are small, even when the circumflex appears over breathings. The double grave accent and marginal quotation marks are in use.
Minuscule epsilon, sigma and phi often appear with their loops forming a sharp angle downward to the right, and the ligature of epsilon-upsilon with a vertical upturn to the right.
Punctuation marks present include the lower, middle and upper points, middle comma, question mark and full stop.
Headings for texts were written in Alexandrine majuscule script in red ink and gilded. Headings for the date of each feast were written in the margins in epigraphic display majuscule in red ink and gilded.
ff. 174r-175v, 219r-243v and 257r-272v were copied by Hand C, in upright mixed minuscule script similar to Perlschrift, in brown ink, with little variation in letter size.
Syllabic abbreviations and superscript word endings appear only at the end of lines. Breathings are both angular (not including the half-H form) and round. Mute iota is usually absent. Use of the double dot is functional only. Nomina sacra are accentuated only when at least four letters long or with enclitics. Circumflexes are expanded when they appear over breathings. The double grave accent and marginal quotation marks are in use.
Punctuation marks present include the lower, middle and upper points, lower comma, question mark and full stop.
Headings for texts were written in Alexandrine majuscule script in red ink and gilded. Headings for the date of each feast were written in the margins in epigraphic display majuscule in red ink and gilded.
Decoration
Each text is preceded by a narrow rectangular headpiece in red, blue, green and white paint and gold (e.g. ff. 64v, 77v, 174r, 209r, 228v, 234v).
Each text begins with a major initial in red, blue, green and white paint and gold.
Headings were written in red ink and gilded.
Additions
The scribes have added occasional marginal ση(μεῖωσαι) marks to highlight notable passages (e.g. f. 175r).
There are occasional marginal annotations and pen-trials in Greek by various hands (e.g. ff. 41r, 165r, 254v). These include a prayer in vernacular Greek for himself and his child written on f. 62v by Nikolaos Chalkokandyles, in a 16th or 17th-century hand: ‘Κύριε βηἥθη τοῦ δοῦλου σου Νικολαοῦ τοῦ Χαλκοκανδύλου ἀμα καὶ το τέκνον αὐτοῦ καὶ ὁ Θεός να τον εφηλάξη ἐν ημερα της κρίσεως’. This has been copied opposite on f. 63r by a different hand, and a similar prayer has been added here by a third, crude hand, that of one Demetrios, whose surname is probably the same as that of Nikolaos: ‘Κύριε βοηθι του δουλου σου Δειμιτριου του Χλακοκαρδειλ και ο Θεος να τον εφειλάξεν’.
On f. 65r is a note in Venetian dialect by Zorzi Cogini.
Notes in English, in pencil, have been added regarding lost folios, by Henry Bradshaw (1831-1886) , University Librarian 1867-1886
. There have been later amendments to some of these, probably by the same hand as the alterations to the foliation.Binding
The quires are stitched together, but without boards or cover. The present stitching, on six recessed stations, is not the original one, as notches for five recessed stations from a previous stitching can be seen.
360 × 282 × 89 mm.
Accompanying Material
The manuscript is accompanied by a loose slip of paper with a note in English regarding its content, and a plastic sleeve containing some small fragments of parchment from it.
