Physical Description
Mid-20th-century foliation:
[a-c] + i + 2-189, 192-208, 213-214 + [d-e]
Numbering in pencil in the upper right-hand corner of the rectos, by H.L. Pink. Folio numbers 1, 190-191 and 209-212 assigned to leaves judged to be no longer present in the volume (as per historic foliation practice at Cambridge University Library).
Collation
Mainly quires of 8 leaves.
- Quire 18-1 (ff. 2-8; 1st leaf missing before f. 2, i.e. f. 1)
- Quire 28 (ff. 9-16)
- Quire 310-2 (ff. 17-24; 7th and 8th leaves after f. 22 cancelled)
- Quires 4-168 (ff. 25-128)
- Quire 176 (ff. 129-134)
- Quire 18-238 (ff. 135-182)
- Quire 248-1 (ff. 183-189; 8th leaf after f. 189 missing, i.e. f. 190)
- Quire 258-1 (ff. 192-198; 1st leaf before f. 192 missing, i.e. f. 191)
- Quire 268 (ff. 199-206)
- Quire 278-4 (ff. 207-214; 3rd-6th leaves after f. 212 missing, i.e. ff. 209-212)
18-1 (1st leaf missing) 28 310-2 (7th-8th leaves cancelled) 4-168 176 18-238 248-1 (8th leaf missing) 258-1 (1st leaf missing) 268 278-4 (3rd-6th leaves missing)
No catchwords.Quire signatures, in the form of Roman numerals (corresponding to the quire numbers as given in the collation): see, for example, ff. 40v, 56v, 64v. Most of the signatures have been trimmed away but occasionally the decoration around the signature is still visible: a series of tapering horizontal lines forming a pyramid shape above and below the numeral (see, for example, ff. 16v, 24v, 48v, 72v>).
This mode of presentation is observable up to f. 89v but changes thereafter, the following quire signatures being numbered with a numeral only between four dots. This coincides with a change in the preparation of the page for writing (see Layout) and scribal hand (see Hands).
Condition
Folio 2r is heavily water-stained, with some loss of text, and patches of water staining are found on a few subsequent leaves.
The lower margins of several leaves have been either wholly or partially excised (ff. 9, 38, 39, 97, 112, 119, 161, 164); part of the fore-edge margin of one leaf (f. 172) and all of the fore-edge margin of another (f. 122) has been excised as well. Although some lower margins elsewhere in the volume contain insertions by other hands, in these locations there is no obvious loss of text.
Erasures on ff. 12r, 47v, 101v, 102r and 166r.
Layout
ff. 2r-88v 225 × 180 mm.
Two columns, frame and line ruling in plummet. 28-33 lines, written above top line.
ff. 89r-214v 225 × 180 mm.
Two columns, frame and line ruling in hardpoint on the hair side of the leaves. 28-33 lines, written above top line. Pricking marks seen sporadically in outer margin only, particularly towards the end of the volume (ff. 173-206).
Hand(s)
Written in Caroline minuscule by several scribes, perhaps at Lyons, with the principal change of hand occurring at f. 89r, at the beginning of Quire 12.
Headings in uncial in red or occasionally alternating lines of red and black/brown ink.
Decoration
Two-line plain initials in red at textual divisions.
Additions
Two liturgical forms have been added by a 9th-century hand, with some musical notation:
- At the foot of f. 74r is Virgo prudentissime quo pregrederis (cf. Van Dijk, SMRL II, 156, where it is given as the antiphon for vespers at the Vigil of the Assumption.
- At the foot of f. 115r is Veniens vir splendidissimus a Constantino (sic) regem nocte excitavit eum dicens Aspice in celum et vide signum crucis domini... (associated with the Invention of the Holy Cross; cf. Peter Damian, Liber qui dicitur Gratissimus ad Henricum archiepiscopum Ravennatem, PL 145:124C).
Noted antiphons inserted into the lower margins of several leaves: ff. 12r (now largely erased), 74r, 115r.
Sketches in pencil, plummet or hardpoint in margins by hands of various dates: for example, simple knotwork pattern (ff. 17v, 89r), foliage (ff. 19v, 20v, 90v), standing figure in central margin (f. 197v).
Quire numbers added in the 17th or 18th century are occasionally visible in the upper right-hand corner of the recto of the first leaf of a quire, written in Arabic numerals in light brown ink (see, for example, f. 199r = '26'). The inscription of '25' on f. 192r confirms that the first leaf of this quire was lost before the addition of these signatures.
Note concerning the rebinding of the manuscript and its collation written on the rear pastedown by Arthur Owen .
Binding
Binding of quarter brown leather and marbled paper sides, by Douglas Cockerell and Son of Grantchester, 1974.
Mottled calf binding, with gold-tooled decoration and titles on the spine, 17th- or 18th-century. Examples preserved on front pastedown.
History
Wilmart (1912), Goldbacher (1913) and Hauler (1913) together showed that the contents of this manuscript on ff. 3r-152r were copied directly or indirectly from a manuscript written apparently in the region of Luxeuil in the 7th century. This latter manuscript, known as the Codex Phirmaconensis, is now divided into three parts:
- Paris, Bibliothèque nationale, MS lat. 11641
- St Petersburg, National Library of Russia, Lat.F.papyr. I.1 (formerly Leningrad, M.E. Saltyakov-Schedrin State Public Library)
- Geneva, Bibliothèque de Genève, Ms. lat. 16
In that manuscript, the thirty-sixth sermon (Sermo de evangelio ubi dicit...; ff. 151r-152r) ended a few lines further on and was followed by Sermo de Caritate (see Mai (1844) and Hamman (1960), a heading for which appears at the end of the capitula on f. 3r of this copy. Part of that sermon may followed on f. 152r-152v, where approximately 31 lines have been carefully erased, but this is uncertain. The next item follows, with no indication of a change of exemplar, on f. 152v, col. 1, l. 18.
In an unpublished description of MS Add. 3479 (now UA ULIB 7/3/75/22), Roger Mynors observed that Codex Phimarconensis was at Lyons, from at least the first half of the 9th century, for it contains marginalia in the characteristic hand of Florus of Lyon (for another manuscript at Cambridge University Library that contains notes by Florus, see MS Nn.2.41 ('Codex Bezae'). These notes are not reproduced in this copy, however between ff. 152v and 161r the repeated 'K' in the margin and the marks 'COR. I.' on f. 155r and 'HBR' on f. 156v are in his style, though not by his hand but by that of the scribe of the manuscript. This suggests that this section of the manuscript was also copied from a manuscript that had been read by Florus. If so, MS Add. 3479 may be added to the list of ninth-century Lyon books given by S. Tafel, 'The Lyons scriptorium III - Florus Magister', in Palaeographia Latina, ed. by W.M. Lindsay, St Andrews University Publications, 20 (1925), 40-70. Other scholars have assumed that ff. 3r-152r of this manuscript and Cambrai, Bibliothèque municipale, MS 567 have each descended from Codex Phimarconensis through a common ancestor (see, for example, Lambot (1961), p. x).
Provenance and Acquisition
Metz: the notation of the antiphons added in the 9th century has been identified as that of Metz by H.M. Bannister.

Vitoni' (f. i recto) and pressmark 'E fol. no. 6' (f. [c] verso) (17th/18th cent.).
Payne and Foss , booksellers: no. 512 in their catalogue for February 1826.
Sir Thomas Phillipps (1792-1872) : Middle Hill stamp with coat of arms and no. 2173 on [c] recto (number repeated on [b] verso).
