Contents

Introduction: This manuscript contains sermons and epistles by Isaac of Nineveh (Isaac the Syrian), mystical theologian of the 7th century. As bishop of Nineveh, he retired to live in solitude in Khuzistan. Some of his works, originally composed in Syriac, were translated into Greek in the 9th century by Patrikios and Abramios, monks of the Lavra of St. Sabas in Palestine. The codex is formed by a principal, older, part (I) and a later addition (part II). Part I (ff. 2-358) has been copied entirely by one hand, datable to the 14th century. This part has suffered some damage: some leaves have been lost at the beginning, in the middle and at the end. Part II (ff. 359-368) looks like a restoration. It was put in place between the end of the 16th century and the first decade of the 17th by a scribe originating from Athens, Michael Antristos, who was active in the years 1584-1610, and lived in Constantinople in 1599 and 1601 (see RGK I, no. 277). He added the ending of the last text and restored it in some parts where the ink had faded due to water stains. Dr Erika Elia

Physical Description

Form: codex
Extent: Codex: 366 leaves., 222 × 150 mm.
Foliation: Modern pencil foliation in Arabic numerals, in the top right hand corner recto: 2-89, 92-358-368, 371. The number 371 has been written on the right pastedown. Folio numbers 1, 90, 91, 369, 370 have been assigned to leaves no longer present in the volume (as per historic foliation practices at Cambridge University Library).

Collation

16-1, 2-118, 128-2, 13-458 | 46-474, 484-2

Condition

The codex is in fair condition. The leaves are yellowed and there are large water stains towards the gutter, which have sometimes made the script difficult to read; in various places letters have been retraced by another hand in black ink (see e.g. f. 319r). Throughout the manuscript there are numerous worm-holes (see e.g. f. 317r). Some leaves are damaged (see e.g. f. 89).

Binding

Byzantine binding. Brown leather cover over wooden boards. Blind tooling on cover: two rectangular frames of double fillets, with various small stamps (arabesques, vegetal motifs) and a circular medallion containing a double-headed eagle. On the right board there are two groups of three holes, where the clasps were fixed. Remnants of a triple-braided leather strap are visible on the right pastedown. On the lower part of the spine golden tooling with the shelfmark.

235 × 165 × 90 mm.

History

Provenance and Acquisition

The manuscript was bought in 1895 from Bernard Quaritch (Easterling (1962), p. 314).

Philoxenus, Bishop of Hierapolis, Epistle
Explicit: f. 358v τὴν πρώτην ἐλευθερίαν· καὶ κατέτριψεν||

The text in part I ends imperfectly at Pirard (2012), p. 852 l. 739. It was completed by a later hand in part II.

Physical Description

Form: codex
Support: Western paper, folded in quarto. Watermarks: ff. 2-358 Clover ( 30 ca. × 40 ca. mm. ) in the gutter, comparable to Briquet Feuille no. 6212 and Harlfinger Fleur no. 11, which are dated to 1318/1319 and to ca. 1330-1335.

Collation

Part I is formed almost entirely by quaternions. Quire 1 is a ternion which has lost the first leaf, with loss of text; quire 12 has lost the 4th and 5th leaves (ff. 90-91), again with loss of text.

  • Quire 16-1 ff. 2-6
  • Quires 2-118 ff. 7-86 (β΄-ια΄)
  • Quire 128-2 ff. 87-89, 92-94 (ιβ΄)
  • Quires 13-458 ff. 95-358 (ιγ΄-με΄)

Original Greek signatures in ink by the main scribe, on the recto of the first folio of each quire (though not consistently: they are also present on the last verso), in the lower margin, centre, from β΄ (2, f. 7r, where only a trace in red ink remains on the lower edge) to με΄ (45, f. 358v). Due to trimming and to damage they are not always visible.

Layout

ff. 2r-358v A single column of 24 lines. 175-180 ca. × 110 mm.

Hand(s)

Hand A: the texts have been written in a minuscule script, regular, small, upright, characterized by the enhancement of some oblique and vertical strokes (in letters such as tau, delta, chi, alpha), datable in the first half of the 14th century.

The text is written in brown ink; titles and initials in red.

The scribe wrote also notes in the margins.

Decoration

Initials in ekthesis in red ink with a simple vegetal decoration, see e.g. f. 17r. Minor thick initials in red ink, see e.g. f. 16r.

Additions

Passim, throughout the manuscript, there are marginal annotations in Greek by another hand, see e.g. ff. 173v, 274v, 336v.

On the left pastedown there are modern annotations in pencil, presumably by a librarian: the letter ‘ F’ (relating to the size of the codex), and the number ‘ 87’ with the indication of the author of the texts ‘ Isaac Ninevita’; in black ink is written twice the number ‘ 12’, maybe a previous shelfmark; moreover, there are some scattered annotations by hand B in Greek, indicating some relevant passages of the text.

On f. 2r, in the upper margin, there are modern annotations indicating the present shelfmark of the manuscript and the loss of f. 1. Similar notes in pencil indicating the loss of leaves are present in the upper margin of f. 92r (ff. 90-91) and on the right pastedown.

On the right pastedown there are annotations in modern Greek, accounts, by a hand not present elsewhere in the manuscript.

History

Origin:

The main part of the manuscript was copied in the 14th century, probably in the first half, as suggested by the watermark of the paper.

Philoxenus, Bishop of Hierapolis, Epistle

The text in part II starts imperfectly from the point where the text in part I ends (Pirard 2012, p. 852 l. 739).

Physical Description

Form: codex
Support: ff. 359-368 Western paper, folded in quarto. No watermarks are visible.

Collation

Part II consists of binions. The last two leaves of quire 48 have been excised, without loss of text.

  • Quires 46-47 4 ff. 359-366 (μϛ΄-μζ΄)
  • Quire 48 4-2 ff. 367-368 (μη΄)

Modern quire signatures in pencil on the first folio recto of the quires, in the lower margin, centre, from μϛ΄ (46, f. 359r) to μη΄ (48, f. 367r).

Layout

ff. 359r-363r A single column of 22 lines. 180 × 110-115 ca. mm.

Hand(s)

ff. 359r-363r Hand B: these leaves have been copied by Michael Antristos (16th c., 4th quarter-17th c., beginning ) , (Μιχαὴλ Ἄντριστος, RGK II, 378. See also RGK I, 277; RGK III, 364) in a minuscule script, with many curly flourishes

The text is written in brown ink.

The scribe seems to have retraced lines of the texts, where the ink was faded due to water stains (see e.g. f. 358v).

History

Origin:

The original manuscript (part I) probably suffered damage before the end of the 16th century. Between the end of the 16th century and the first decade of the 17th, the scribe Michael Antristos (active 4th quarter of the 16th century to the beginning of the 17th century) completed the end of the text and restored it in some parts where the ink was faded due to water stains.
