Physical Description

Form: codex
Support: ff. 1-126 Western paper, folded in octavo. Watermarks: there are traces of watermarks near the upper or lower edge, near the gutter (and a countermark with letters and a clover in the centre of the leaf), but it was not possible to identify them.
Extent: Codex: 126 leaves., 145 × 100 mm.
Foliation: Modern foliation in pencil, in Arabic numerals, in the upper margin, right: 1-126.

Collation

The codex is formed of quires of 14, 16 and 18 leaves.

  • Quire 114 ff. 1-14
  • Quire 2 18 ff. 15-32
  • Quire 3 16 ff. 33-48
  • Quire 414 ff. 49-62
  • Quire 518 ff. 63-80
  • Quire 614 ff. 81-94
  • Quire 718 ff. 95-112
  • Quire 814 ff. 113-126

Vertical catchwords by the scribe on the verso of each leaf.

Condition

The manuscript is in poor condition. The binding is damaged: both boards are lost, only the spine remains, the manuscript is preserved in a box. F. 1 is damaged, the ink has partially faded, there are tears, and a part of the leaf is missing. There are humidity and water stains throughout.

Layout

  • ff. 1r-24v: a single column of 19-20 lines
  • ff. 25r-31v: a single column of 14 lines
  • ff. 32r-107v: a single column of 13 lines
  • ff. 108r-126v: a single column of 21 lines
112 × 65 mm.

Hand(s)

ff. 1r-126v Hand A: a minuscule script slanting to the right, flowing, characterized by hooks at the ends of strokes, and a tendency to prefer angular forms. Uprights are always curved and tend to be oblique.

The text is written in black ink on ff. 1r-24v, 32r-128v; the scribe uses a brown ink on ff. 25r-31v, where the line is also thicker. The scribe does not use iota subscript.

Decoration

On f. 1r there is a rectangular headpiece traced in brown ink; in the centre there is a plaited motif on a black background; the headpiece has a red frame.

Friezes are present throughout:

  • f. 2r, 10r frieze representing a branch with leaves, traced in black ink with some elements coloured in red
  • f. 14v rope motif, traced in black ink, partially filled in red
  • ff. f. 114v, 117r friezes representing a branch, with knots, traced in black ink with a red line within
  • f. 126r frieze representing a branch traced in red ink.

Initials in ekthesis in red ink decorated with vegetal motifs, see e.g. ff. 1r and 114v.

Minor initials in red ink, sometimes with small decoration, see e.g. ff. 113r and 113v.

Zoomorphic initials in red ink (fishes), see e.g. ff. 105v and 108v.

Additions

On f. 1r is written, in black ink, the shelfmark ‘ Add. 3050’.

In the lower margin of f. 126v is written a number, by a later hand; the ink is faded, possibly ‘ 1828’ (a date?).

Binding

Both boards have been lost, only the spine remains. It belonged to a western binding, and it is covered in brown leather with blind tooling in form of two flowers and a star. The manuscript is preserved in a box made by J.S. Wilson and Son with gold tooled shelfmark. With the manuscript is kept a leaf of paper which was folded and used as a paper wrapper for the manuscript (see Accompanying Material).

Accompanying Material

In the box, with the manuscript, is kept a small folder containing some soft material (perhaps wool), which was inserted at f. 79.

With the manuscript comes, in a paper folder, a leaf ( 222 × 320 mm. ), in western paper (no watermark is visible), which now has been sealed in a melinex envelope. Shadings and stains on the leaf suggest that it was once used as a wrapper for the manuscript: in the upper part, centre, there is a water stain, which corresponds with a similar stain in the upper part of the external leaves of the manuscript (see f. 1r), near the gutter. On the leaf there are handwritten notes in black ink: accounts, calculations, and some notes written in a late Greek hand, in modern Greek. The notes were written before the leaf was folded.
