Condition
Layout
A single column of 20 lines. 150 × 95 mm.
Hand(s)
ff. 1r-321r Hand A: the texts were all written by the scribe Dionysios (Διονύσιος, RGK I, 109), who signed the copy in the year 1550, in a minuscule Gebrauchsschrift. The scribe does not write iota subscript.
The text is written in black-grey ink; titles and initials are in red.
Hand a: throughout in the margins and on blank leaves (see left pastedown, ff. 1r, 322v) there are notes by a later hand, an informal minuscule datable in the late 16th or in the 17th century. In this script is written an ownership note of a hieromonk Pachomios in the lower margin of f. 1r: this could be the name of this scribe.
Written in black ink.
Hand b: on f. 322v there are a few notes by a later hand, an informal minuscule datable in the late 16th or 17th century. In this script is written an ownership note of a proigoumenos Raphael.
Written in black ink.
Hand c: on f. 322r there is a note by a later hand, an informal minuscule slanting to the right, datable possibly to the 16th or 17th century.
Written in black ink.
Decoration
On ff. 1r, 38r, 55v, 61r , 69r, 86v, 92v, 103v, 108v, 116v, 122r, 139v, 157r, 189v, 195v, 209v, 226v, 240r, 247r, 253v , 260v, 271r, 275r, 278v, 290r, 299r, 302r, 310r, 314r there are small undulated linear friezes with clover leaves at both ends, in red or black ink, or in black ink with the clover leaves coloured in red.
Initials in ekthesis in red ink, decorated with a simple vegetal motif of vine scrolls, see e.g. f. 1r.
Minor initials in red ink throughout.
Additions
On the left pastedown another hand wrote some notes on baptism from John Damascene,‘ Ἐρώτησις· πόσα βαπτίσματα ὑπάρχουσιν; Ἀπόκρισις· ἐκ τῶν θεολογικῶν Ἰωάννου τοῦ Δαμασκηνοῦ·’. The hand that wrote this note seems to be the same as that responsible for writing the ownership note by the hieromonk Pachomios (hand a) on f. 1r (see Provenance). Under this note, written in black ink, there is another brief note, difficult to read, possibly by the same hand, in a grey ink, mentioning a liturgy ( λιτουργία[sic]), possibly: ι (?) βαριαμῃ (?) ἡ λιτουργία τοῦ πανεο[sic]φίτου (?)
In the upper margin of f. 1r is written, in black ink, the shelfmark ‘ Add. 3047’.
On f. 322r there is a note in modern Greek by another hand (hand c), which now is not readable due to damage of the leaf; the note mentions "this book" (l. 1, Τὼ παρὸν β⟨ιβλίον⟩) and a monastery (l. 6, μωνης).
On f. 322v there are, in the upper part, a note by hand c, partially lost due to damage, and, in the lower part, notes in black ink by another hand (b); one of them mentions the ownership by the proigoumenos Raphael (see Provenance).
Throughout the manuscript there are a few scribbles in the margins (see e.g. letters on f. 310v, forms on f. 204r).
Binding
Eastern Mediterranean binding, probably original to the production of the manuscript. Full leather cover over wooden boards. Blind tooling on both boards: a frame, vegetal motifs in the inner corners, an oval in the centre. On the left cover, the oval contains a half-length figure bearing a scroll (an Evangelist?); on the right cover it contains an arabesque motif. Two metal catch plates on the left board; one leather strap in the upper part of the right board, with metal hook; only the attachment of a second, in the lower part, is preserved. Blind tooling on the boards' edges, which are bevelled towards the inner face. Gauffered edges (a four-leaf clover and leaves design) with traces of color. Gold tooling on spine with shelfmark, only partially extant, ‘ Add. 30… ’ 220 × 160 × 70 mm.
The spine is worn and partially detached from covers, the lower part is lost. The cover is damaged.
History
The manuscript was copied by the hieromonk Dionysios in 1550 (see colophon on f. 321r).
Provenance and Acquisition
The manuscript was owned by a hieromonk Pachomios, as stated in a note in the lower margin of f. 1r (original orthography): ‘Καὶ τὸδε πρὸς τοῖς ἄλλοις Παχωμίου ἰερομονάχου’.
The manuscript was also owned by a Raphael proigoumenos, see note on f. 322v (original orthography): ‘Καὶ τὼδε σὺν τῆς ἅλλοις πέφικεν προιγουμένῳ Ραφαήλ’.
The manuscript was later owned by C. J. Cummings of Volos.
It was bought in 1891 from Cummings through H. C. Rae of Liverpool (see Easterling (1962), p. 319.
