Contents

Introduction: This fragment consists of two unstitched quires from a Theotokarion, a book of hymns to the Virgin Mary (the Theotokos), probably copied in the 14th century. The individual hymns - theotokia - are organised so that the first letters of each hymn form a series of acrostics, one of which survives here in its entirety, along with the latter part of the preceding acrostic and the early part of the following one. The first two sequences both contain errors, where the first letter of one hymn does not correspond to the letter which should appear at this point in the acrostic. The individual bifolia of these quires not being stitched together, there is an error in the foliation of the first quire, reversing the order of two bifolios. Dr Christopher Wright

Language(s): Greek

1. ff. 1r-1v, 3r-3v, 2r-2v, 5r
Theotokia
Incipit: || f. 1r ἀνοήτως· τὴν φθορὰν τὴν τῆς σαρκός μου
Explicit: f. 5r καὶ τὴν ὄντως προξενοῦσα· σωτηριώδη ἀμένειαν

Defective at the beginning

The initial letters of these hymns are the last letters of an acrostic, reading ‘ρ.ντε δος μοτ την .υσιν’, which can be reconstructed as part of words correctly reading ‘Ἄχραντε δός μοι τὴν λύσιν’, but with tau as the eleventh letter rather than the correct iota

2. ff. 5r-5v, 4r-4v, 6r-11v
Theotokia

The initial letters of these hymns form an acrostic, which should read ‘Τρέφον τὸ πένθος εἰς χαράν μοι παρθένε’; however, the fourth hymn in fact begins with the letter lambda rather than phi.

3. ff. 11v-15v
Theotokia
Explicit: f. 15v πονηρίας πρότερον τῆς||

Defective at the end

The initial letters of these hymns are the first 21 letters of an acrostic, reading ‘Δέσποινά μου ῥῦσαί με παν’, the full text of which is given in the heading as ‘Δέσποινά μου ῥῦσαί με παντοίας βλάβης’.

Physical Description

Form: codex
Support: Eastern paper
Extent: Fragment (leaves) 15 leaves. 167 × 250 mm.
Foliation: The leaves are foliated with the numbers 1, 3, 2, 5, 4, 6-15, in pencil, in Arabic and Roman numerals, recto, upper right. This foliation reversed the order of the bifolio composed of ff. 1 and 6 with the one composed of ff. 3 and 4.

Collation

This fragment consists of 2 unbound quires, both quaternia.

  • Quire 18-1 ff. 1-7 The first folio has been lost, with loss of text
  • Quire 28 ff. 8-15

Condition

There are some losses to the edges of the folios, particularly in the gutter of ff. 1-7. There is some water staining.

Layout

A single column of 23 lines. 120 × 85 mm.

Hand(s)

The text was copied in mixed minuscule script, slanting slightly to the right, in brown ink, with moderate variation in letter size and some flourishing of tails into the margin.

Syllabic abbreviations and superscript word endings appear throughout the line. Breathings are round and mute iota is absent, or subscript. There is decorative use of the double dot, and accentuation of all nomina sacra . Accents are sometimes joined to letters and breathings.

The modern eta and modern nu are present, and there are inclusions of letters within omicron.

Punctuation used includes the upper and middle points and full stop.

Headings are written in the same style in red ink.

Decoration

The beginnings of sections are marked by minor initials in red ink.

The beginning of the text on f. 5r is preceded by a simple vignette in red ink.

Additions

There are occasional marginal annotations in Greek by different hands (ff. 1r, 11v-12v, 14r).

The fragment has been marked with the present classmark on f. 1r and with the present classmark and the former classmark T.26 on f. 7r.

History

Origin: The style of script suggests that the fragment was copied in the 14th century, which would also be consistent with the material used.

Provenance and Acquisition

Owned by the Biblical scholar Constantin von Tischendorf (1815-1874) .

Bought by the University Library from Tischendorf's executors, 23 February 1876.
