Physical Description

Form: codex
Support: Parchment (FHHF), of medium thickness and quality.
Extent: Fragment (quire) 4 leaves. 224 × 168 mm.
Foliation: The quire is foliated with the numbers 1-4, in Arabic numerals, in pencil, recto, upper right.

Collation

The fragment consists of 2 bifolia, probably the inner half of a quaternion.

  • Quire 18-4 ff. 1-4 The first, second, seventh and eighth folios have probably been lost, with loss of text.

Condition

There are areas of dirt and mild water staining.

Layout

A single column of 26 lines. 153 × 110 mm. Pricking survives in all three margins, but some has been lost to cropping. Ruled in hardpoint, system Leroy 1, type Leroy 32C1.

Hand(s)

The text was copied in an upright low epsilon style mixed minuscule script in black ink. There is moderate variation in letter size, and slight flourishing of tails into the margin. There are deletions by expunctuation, but these may be by a later hand.

Syllabic abbreviations and superscript word endings appear only at the end of lines. Breathings are round, and mute iota is absent. There is decorative use of the double dot. There is accentuation of all lengths of nomina sacra . The double grave accent is in use.

The flat-bottomed omega and small x-shaped kappa are present. Distinctive letter-forms include minuscule kappa with very short acenders. There are frequent low epsilon ligatures.

Punctuation used includes the middle and upper points, lower and middle commas and question mark. The end of sections is sometimes marked by an additional point in red ink.

Headings are written in the same style, with greater use of majuscule forms, in red ink.

Decoration

Sections of text begin with minor initials in red ink, at the beginning of the following line where the section begins in mid-line.

Additions

As part of the original process of production, the scribe has marked the numbers of κεφάλαια (chapters) and Ammonian sections in the margins, and the numbers and headings (τίτλοι) of κεφάλαια in the upper margin, in dark red ink.

A later hand has added marginal lection notes, ἀρχή and τέλος marks indicating the beginning and end of lections in the margins or inserted into the text, and marginal numbers giving a sequential count of lections (ἀναγνώσεις), in bright red ink. There are occasional corrections and notes in Greek by another later hand.

The fragment is marked with the present classmark and the previous classmark T.5, and a modern chapter and verse reference for the beginning of the surviving text, on f. 1r.

Binding

The fragment has a modern card binding reinforced with cloth inside the spine.

History

Origin: The style of script suggests that the manuscript was copied in the late 12th or 13th century. The use of black ink and the low epsilon style script suggest that it was produced in Cyprus or the Levant.
