Contents

Introduction: This manuscript, copied in the second half of the 16th century, is a collection of Canon law in Greek, composed of two distinct parts bound together. The first part contains the compendium of canon law compiled from earlier collections by the 14th-century monk and theologian Matthaios Blastares, which is organised by topics arranged in alphabetical order. This collection became a standard reference work across the Orthodox Christian world. The second part contains the so-called Apostolic canons, the decrees of the Ecumenical Councils of the Church and of various other synods, and canonical letters and decrees by Fathers of the Church and later prelates, the latest dating from the early 13th century. The two parts were the work of two different scribes. The same type of paper forms part of both parts, but since their content forms two cohesive entities and the first part retains original quire signatures which do not appear in the second, they may have been originally the product of two different projects of production occurring around the same time. However, they were evidently bound together at a very early stage, since they retain their 16th-century Greek binding. In the 18th or 19th century the manuscript was owned by one Akakios, from Perge on the southern coast of Turkey. Dr Christopher Wright

Language(s): Greek

Physical Description

Form: codex
Extent: Codex: 1 + 301 leaves. 316 × 215 mm.
Foliation: The manuscript is foliated with the numbers i + 1-147, 1-154, in Arabic numerals, recto, upper right. The numbers 1-143 of the first sequence, constituting Part I, and 1-153 of the second sequence, which belong to Part II, are in black ink, while the endleaf number i and the numbers 144-147 of the first sequence and 154 of the second sequence have been added later in pencil.

Collation

Part I consists of 18 quires and Part II of 20: 1-308, 318-1, 32-378, 388-2

Condition

There is extensive pest damage throughout. The larger holes have been repaired with Japanese paper. There is mild water staining and areas of dirt. A crushed insect adheres to f. 1:108r, and there is loose plant material between ff. 1:132 and 1:133.

Additions

As part of the original production of the manuscript, section numbers, other indications of content and ση(μείωσαι) marks highlighting notable passages have been marked in the margins.

Manicules have occasionally been added to highlight passages (e.g. f. 2:98r)

There are occasional brief annotations by later hands (e.g. f. 2:6r).

Two ownership notes have been written by Akakios of Perge, one on the left pastedown: ‘Καὶ τόδε σὺν τοῖς ἄλλοις τελέθει τοῦ ταπεινοῦ Ἀκακίου τοῦ ἐκ Παργης’ and the other on f. i recto: ‘Καὶ τόδε πρὸς τοῖς ἄλλοις πέλει Ἀκακίου, τοῦ ἐκ Παργης’.

Binding

Alla Graeca binding from the second half of the 16th century.

Five sewing stations prepared with v-notches. Sewing is an unsupported loop-stitch with an S-twist sewing thread.

Greek-style endbands: wound cream threads around two cord cores (Greek-style simple endband) with a decorative woven secondary endband creating chevron patterns with pink and green silk threads. Blue transverse continuous textile lining. There is a separate cream-coloured textile panel between the lowermost sewing station and the tail. This may also be the case at the head but cannot be confirmed. Laid paper endleaves made of one pastedown and a flyleaf. The left endleaves are separate sewn through a stub, the right endleaves are separate tipped.

Couched laminate boards with no squares and attached with bridling.

Full covering of brown-red tanned skin with lapped turn-ins with foredge over.

Blind tooling decoration on both boards. Quintuple fillet border with a quintuple fillet inner frame, and quintuple diagonal fillets intersecting the borders at the corners. The lower diagonal fillets meet towards the centre and the upper diagonal fillets do the same, however the pairs do not meet. Use of floral tools, the same tool being repeated at each corner, the centre of each frame edge, and where the diagonals meet. Central almond shaped medallion with a smaller floral tool on its centre.

Two modern paper labels with the classmark are stuck at head and tail on the spine.

326 × 231 × 67 mm.

There is extensive pest damage to the boards and covering material. The endcaps are damaged. Some of the tie downs are broken, and on both endbands the secondary endband is coming away.

Accompanying Material

A bookplate on the left pastedown records the purchase of the manuscript with money from the Rustat Fund.

History

Provenance and Acquisition

Owned by Akakios of Perge, probably in the 18th or 19th century, as indicated by the notes on the left pastedown and f. i recto.

Bought by the University Library from the London bookseller Bernard Quaritch , 5 March 1875, with money from the Rustat Fund.

Physical Description

Form: codex
Support: ff. 1:1-1:96, 1:145r-2:85 Western paper, folded in folio. Watermark: Anchor ( 62 × 37 mm. ), in the centre of the folio, similar to Mošin 1673. This example is dated to 1570-1580. ff. 1:97-1:144 Western paper, folded in folio. Watermark: Crown ( 55 × 37 mm. ), in the centre of the folio, similar but not identical to CCI icpl.cci.XIV.141.a. This example is undated.

Collation

This part consists of 18 quires, all quaternia.

  • Quires 1-188 ff. 1:1-1:144

There are original quire signatures in Greek numerals, in black ink, on the first folio of each quire, recto, lower right. They survive on all quires (αʹ-ιηʹ).

Layout

A single column of 30 lines. 225 × 145 mm.

Hand(s)

ff. 1:1r-1:144r and 2:150r-2:153r were copied by Hand A, in mixed minuscule script, slanting slightly to the right, in black or brown ink, with modest variation in letter size.

Syllabic abbreviations and superscript word endings appear throughout the line. Breathings are round and mute iota is subscript or absent. There is frequent decorative use of the double dot and accentuation of all nomina sacra . Accents are sometimes joined to letters and breathings.

The modern eta, modern nu, sigma telikon and loop epsilon are present.

Punctuation used includes the middle and upper points, middle comma, question mark and full stop. Punctuation points are often followed by another point in orange ink.

The same hand has added headings, in the same style in orange ink.

Decoration

The beginning of the text on f. 1:1r is preceded by a plaited headpiece, outlined in brown ink with orange infill.

Sections begin with simple minor initials in orange ink. A larger, ornamented initial begins the text on f. 1:1r.

History

Origin: This part was probably copied in the last third of the 16th century, as suggested by the watermarks. This is consistent with the style of script.

Physical Description

Form: codex
Support: ff. 1:1-1:96, 1:145r-2:85 Western paper, folded in folio. Watermark: Anchor ( 62 × 37 mm. ), in the centre of the folio, similar to Mošin 1673. This example is dated to 1570-1580. ff. 2:86-2:154 Western paper, folded in folio. Watermark: Paschal lamb ( 48 × 47 mm. ), in the centre of the folio, similar but not identical to Gravell 2037. This example is dated to 1580-1583.

Collation

This part consists of 20 quires, all of which are quaternia. The order of Quires 34 and 35 (numbered 16 and 17) has been reversed.

  • Quires 19-308 ff. 1:145-1:147, 2:1-93
  • Quire 318-1 ff. 2:94-2:100 The first folio has been cancelled, without loss of text.
  • Quires 32-378 ff. 2:101-2:148
  • Quire 388-2 ff. 2:149-2:154 The last folio has been cancelled, without loss of text, while the seventh folio forms the right pastedown.

There are quire signatures in Arabic numerals, in pencil, on the first folio of each quire, recto, lower right, beginning a new sequence for this part. They survive on all quires (1-20).

Layout

A single column of 30 lines. 225 × 130 mm.

Hand(s)

ff. 2:1r-2:149v were copied by Hand B, in mixed minuscule script with variable slant, in black ink, with modest variation in letter size.

Syllabic abbreviations and superscript word endings appear throughout the line. Breathings are round and mute iota is absent. There is decorative use of the double dot and accentuation of all nomina sacra . Accents are sometimes joined to letters, breathings, abbreviations and nomina sacra strokes. The double grave accent is in use.

The modern nu and loop epsilon are present.

Punctuation used includes the middle and upper points, lower comma, question mark and full stop.

Decoration

The beginnings of some texts are preceded by thin bands of ornament, outlined in brown ink with red and orange infill (e.g. ff. 1:146r, 2:1r).

Minor initials in red ink, with simple ornament, begin each sub-section, while the initial letters of important words are also often in red ink. Minor initials and rounded letters at the beginning of sub-sections frequently have infill in translucent yellow wash.

The transition between texts and sections is sometimes accompanied by line-fillers outlined in brown ink with red and orange infill (e.g. f. 2:56v), sometimes with zoomorphic elements (e.g. ff. 2:62v, 2:73v).

History

Origin: This part was probably copied in the last third of the 16th century, as suggested by the watermarks. This is consistent with the style of script.
