Contents

Introduction: This manuscript, probably copied between the 10th and the 11th century, contains a selection of homilies by the Patriarch of Constantinople, John Chrysostom (d. 407). In all likelihood, given the worn condition of the final leaves, the manuscript comes from the final part of a larger original manuscript. Ten quires, containing at least six more homilies, are missing, before the part preserved here. Three quires and other leaves are missing from within the portion preserved here, and a quire containing the conclusion of the last homily is also missing from the end. The manuscript has been foliated twice; here we follow the second foliation since the first one has been struck out. The difference between the two is 80, so that f. 1r corresponds to f. 81r of the previous numbering.

Physical Description

Form: codex
Support: Parchment (FHHF), of medium thickness and quality.
Extent: Codex: 9 + 141 + 9 leaves., 318-325 × 245 mm.

The first foliation starts with numbering from 81 and has been struck out, the second on starts over from 1. ff. 45-47 have been numbered three times, and the first two numbers are struck out. Folio numbers [44], [49-50], [56], [79-86], [127-134], [156-159], [166-174] have been assigned to stubs added in place of leaves no longer present in the volume (as per historic foliation practices at Cambridge University Library). [a-h] and [k-s] are compensation stubs from the adjacent endleaves. All the above mentioned stubs and the endleaves [ii-viii] and [xi-xvii] are blank and have not been imaged.

Collation

The manuscript consists of 20 quires, to which three were added (consisting only of stubs) to replace those lost, after quires 10, 15 and 19.

  • Quires 1-58 ff. 1r-40v
  • Quire 68-1 ff. 41r-48v
  • Quire 78-3 ff. [49]r-[56]v

  • Quire 198-2 ff. [159]r-[166]v

Original quire signatures written in Greek numerals in brown ink in the lower inner corner of the first folio, recto from ια to λ. ιγ (f. 17r) and ιϛ (f. 41r) are repeated on the last folios of the relevant quires (ff. 24v, 48v); ιε on f. 33r (first of the quire) in pencil by a later hand, by the copyist in brown ink on f. 40v (last of the quire).

Modern leaf signatures, in pencil on each bifolio, recto, lower right, starting from 11.

Condition

The book is heavily soiled throughout the textblock. At the upper edge and fore-edge corners, there is extensive water and pest damage. ff. 108 and 160 mutilated.

Layout

ff. 1r-165v: A double column of 29 lines, written space 230 × 165 mm. Pricking survives on lower margins. Ruled in hardpoint, system Leroy 1, type Leroy 32C2 . Text hangs from the lines.

Hand(s)

The manuscript has been copied by a single hand in a Perlschrift, slanting slightly to the right, in pale brown ink, with variation in letter size and rare flourishing of tails into the lower margin.

Syllabic abbreviations appear rarely and only at the end of lines, and superscript word endings are not in use. Breathings are angular and not joined to accents. Mute iota is absent. The nomina sacra are abbreviated. Circumflexes above breathings are sometimes expanded.

The punctuation used comprises the upper point and full stop.

Headings for homilies on the upper margins of the first folio of each homily and titles are by the same hand, in Alexandrine majuscule or epigraphic display majuscule script, in red ink; the homilies are numbered consistently from ζ (f. 12r) to κβ (f. 161v). The paragraph initials are in epigraphic display majuscule script as well.

Decoration

Rectangular headpieces in fretwork style (Laubsägestil) in light blue, red, and green ink are drawn on the top of the rubrics beginning each homily (the blue ink often passed on the previous folio): ff. 12r, 19r, 25r, 34v (partially vanished), 54r, 65r, 73v, 96r, 107v, 117v, 138r, 149v, 161v.

Major initials in blue, red, and green or only red ink marking the start of homilies.

Presence of minor initials in a red-ink uncial script, set apart from the columns of text.

Additions

A reader has noted on the first folio of the homilies (from f. 12r to f. 54r) the number of leaves occupied by each of them with the formula ἔχη φίλα.

Binding

Bound by Wiseman of Cambridge in 1874, and signed on upper left corner of f. [i] verso.

Binding in pale brown half leather covering over millboards. Marbled paper endleaves.

The name of the author and the title are gold-tooled on the spine: S. Joannis Chrysostomi Homiliae Ad Populum.

348 × 276 × 70 mm.

Accompanying Material

A sheet of paper, written after 1962, providing a concordance between the two series of foliation, is kept between the first marbled endleaves.

History

Origin: The characteristics of the scripts suggest that the manuscript was produced between the end of 10th and beginning of 11th century.

Provenance and Acquisition

The manuscript was purchased for Cambridge University Library on 26 January 1874 from the bookseller Bernard Quaritch , with money from the fund established by Tobias Rustat (d. 1694) . This is indicated by the crest applied to books bought using the Rustat fund on f. [i] recto.
