Diktyon no.: Diktyon 12032

Contents

Introduction: This composite manuscript, made up of parts produced at various dates in the first half of the 17th century, is a Greek Miscellany containing a variety of short texts and excerpts. These include collections of excerpted biblical commentaries, Byzantine chronicles, excerpts from the doctrinal compendia of the prominent 12th-century scholar and politician Michael Psellos and the 14th-century monk Matthaios Blastares, letters and orations by Psellos, tracts against Jews and Latin Christians by Blastares and the pioneering commentary on Aristotle's Sophistici Elenchi by the 12th-century writer Michael of Ephesos. The different portions of the manuscript were copied by several different hands, a number of them by the manuscript's owner, the Scottish scholar and long-serving royal librarian Patrick Young (1584-1652). This is one of many Greek manuscripts variously owned, copied, commissioned and annotated by Young. He added colophons recording the completion of some of the texts he copied, showing that this work was done in various times and places, variously in 1622, 1625, 1640 and 1651. Dr Christopher Wright
