Medieval Manuscripts in Cambridge Libraries

A catalogue of Western manuscripts and papyri at Cambridge University Library, the Fitzwilliam Museum and selected Cambridge colleges

Cambridge, Trinity College, MS O.7.4

Diktyon no.: Diktyon 12008

Contents

Introduction: This is a composite manuscript containing mainly Patristic homilies, whose parts were probably copied mostly in the 14th century. The authors who feature most prominently are John Chrysostom and Gregory of Nazianzus, but there are also individual texts by Anastasios of Sinai, Ephraem Syrus, Epiphanios of Constantia, Sophronios of Jerusalem and Gregory of Antioch. Some losses have been substituted by the insertion of replacement leaves. Besides the main patristic body of the manuscript, a shorter portion has been added to the beginning of the manuscript containing a table giving the date of Easter for the years 1404/5-1491/2. This may have been produced for addition to this manuscript or reused from elsewhere. There are also a few folios reused as endleaves and drawn from liturgical manuscripts, bearing fragments of prayers and hymns. In the 16th or 17th century the manuscript was owned by the sakelliou of the Metropolitan of Rhodes, a priest or deacon responsible for the supervision of parish clergy. It was later owned by one Ioannes Borelius, perhaps the 17th-century Neapolitan scientist and mathematician Giovanni Alfonso Borelli, before being acquired later that century by the collector Thomas Gale. Language(s): Greek

Physical Description

Form: codex
Extent: Codex: iv + 10 + 351 + 3 + iii leaves.
Foliation: The manuscript is foliated with the numbers [a-d] + i-ix, [x] + 1-88, 90-236, 240-355 + [xi-xiii] + [e-g] in Arabic and Roman numerals, in pencil, recto, upper right. There is no lacuna in the text between ff. 88 and 90, so the number 89 appears to have been omitted erroneously.
Foliation: ff. 1-355 bear an earlier foliation in Greek numerals with the numbers αʹ-οβʹ, οδʹ-οθʹ, παʹ-πηʹ, πʹ, πθʹ-ριγʹ, ριγʹ-ριηʹ, ρκʹ-ρπγʹ, ρϙγʹ-ρϙδʹ, ρπδʹ-ρϙβʹ, ρϙεʹ-σζʹ, σηʹ/σθʹ, σιʹ-σιγʹ, σκβʹ-σκθʹ, σιδʹ-σκαʹ, σλʹ-σλζʹ, σμʹ-σμηʹ, σνϛʹ-σξγʹ, σμθʹ-σνεʹ, σξδʹ-τνεʹ (1-72, 74-79, 81-88, 80, 89-113, 113-118, 120-183, 193-194, 184-192, 195-207, 208/209, 210-213, 222-229, 214-221, 230-237, 240-248, 256-263, 249-255, 264-355), in black ink, recto, upper right. The order of this foliation reflects the correct order of the folios, now greatly disordered, but contains occasional errors.

Condition

Much of ff. i-ii and [xi-xiii] has been lost, there is slight pest damage to ff 351-355, and there have been smaller losses to the edges of some other folios. Much of this damage has been repaired with Japanese paper. There is extensive water staining, which has caused softening of the paper in many places, and fading of the ink, which has been extensively overwritten by a later hand (e.g. ff. 87v-97r). There are areas of dirt.

Additions

A contents list to ff. 142r-355v in Latin and Greek has been added on f. [d] recto by a 17th or 18-century hand. A 19th-century hand has added a contents list to ff. ii recto-194r in Latin and Greek on f. [c] verso.

Binding

18th-century binding with grey paper covering over couched-laminate boards, with a white parchment spine and plain pastedowns. The classmark appears on the spine on patches.

187 × 139 × 100 mm.

Accompanying Material

At each end of the manuscript are three paper endleaves belonging to the current binding. Besides the early endleaves described in full, there is one paper left endleaf (f. [d]) older than the current binding, but more recent than the remainder of the manuscript.

History

Provenance and Acquisition

Owned in the 16th or early 17th century by the sakelliou of Rhodes, as indicated by the note on f. [x] verso.

Owned by one Ioannes Borelius, perhaps the scientist and mathematician Giovanni Alfonso Borelli (1608-1679) , as indicated by the note on f. 28r.

Owned by the antiquary Thomas Gale (c. 1635-1702) , Fellow of Trinity and Dean of York. It appears in the 1697 catalogue of Gale's collection contained in Trinity College MS O.5.38 (p. 172).

Donated to Trinity College by Thomas's son, the antiquary Roger Gale (1672-1744) , in 1738.

Decoration

Items begin with simple minor initials in brown ink.

Additions

There are brief Greek notes and pen-trials by various hands in the margins and on the otherwise blank ff. i recto and ix verso.

History

Origin: This quire was probably copied in 1404, as the Easter table appearing here begins with 6913 AM (1404/5 CE). This would be consistent with the style of script and the use of eastern paper.

Part 2 [Cambridge, Trinity College, MS O.7.4, f. [x]]

Contents

3. f. [x] recto
Word-list
Language(s): Greek (vernacular)

A fragment of a text written on a reused portion of what was originally a larger sheet of paper

Incipit: || f. [x] recto η προ τινι / να πιασι

f. [x] verso is blank apart from later notes

Physical Description

Form: codex
Support: f. [x] Eastern paper

Collation

This part consists of part of a single folio inserted between the two adjoining, previously existing parts.

Layout

ff. f. [x] recto A single surviving column of at least 20 lines. 115 × 75 mm.

Hand(s)

f. [x] recto was copied by Hand E in a rough mixed minuscule script, slanting to the right, in brown ink, with little variation in letter size. Diacritics and punctuation are not present.

Additions

On f. [x] verso are various Greek notes and pen-trials by different hands, including a note of ownership by the sakelliou of the metropolitan see of Rhodes, dating to the 16th or early 17th century: ‘Τὸ παρὸν βιβλίον ὑπάρχει τοῦ ἐντιμοτάτου[sic] σακελλίου, τῆς ἁγιωτάτης μητροπόλεως Ῥόδου, κὺρ’. This person's name was evidently intended to follow, but was never written.

History

Origin: The script of the original text on this reused fragment is difficult to date, but was copied probably in the 16th or 17th century. It was inserted at some point after the preceding quire had been combined with the part that follows, as red ink from the initial letter on the following f. 1r had been transferred to the preceding. f. ix verso.

Extent: 175 × 125-136 mm.

Collation

This part consists of 32 quires. The reconstruction of a few quires in the collation presented here is conjectural, but on this basis this part contains one binion and one ternion, while the rest of the quires are quaternia. Quire 28 (ff. 213-220) is bound out of order and should follow Quire 29 (ff. 221-228).

  • Quires 2-38 ff. 1-16
  • Quire 44-1 ff. 17-19 One folio has been cancelled, without loss of text (this reconstruction is conjectural).
  • Quires 5-108 ff. 20-67
  • Quire 118-3 ff. 68-72 The first and last folios have been lost, with loss of text, while the fifth has been cancelled, without loss of text.
  • Quire 128-3 ff. 73-78 The first folio has been lost, with loss of text, while the last has become detached and misplaced (f. 87).
  • Quire 138 ff. 79-86
  • Quire 148+1 ff. 87-95 The detached last folio of Quire 12 has been attached to the beginning of this quire.
  • Quires 15-248 ff. 97-176
  • Quire 258+2 ff. 177-186 Two folios detached from Quire 27 have been inserted after the seventh folio of this quire.
  • Quire 268 ff. 187-194
  • Quire 276-4 ff. 195-196 The first and last folios of this quire have been lost, with loss of text, and the second and third folios have been detached and inserted into Quire 25 (ff. 184-185).
  • Quires 28-328 ff. 197-236

Layout

ff. 1r-236v A single column of 19 lines. 123 × 80 mm.

Hand(s)

ff. 1r-236v were copied by Hand F in a blocky mixed minuscule script, slanting slightly to the right, in brown ink, with little variation in letter size.

Syllabic abbreviations and superscript word endings appear only at the end of lines. Breathings are round and mute iota is absent. There is decorative use of the double dot, and accentuation of all lengths of nomina sacra .

Punctuation used includes the middle and upper points, lower and middle commas, question mark and full stop.

Decoration

Texts begin with ornamented minor initials in red ink, and some sections with simpler minor initials in red ink.

Transitions between texts are marked by vignettes in red or brown and red ink.

Additions

There are occasional pen-trials and brief marginal notes in Greek by various hands (e.g. ff. 1r, 28r, 141v).

An ownership note of Ioannes Borelius (perhaps Giovanni Alfonso Borelli) appears on f. 28r: ‘Liber Ioannis Borelii’.

History

Origin: This part was probably copied in the 14th century, as suggested by the style of script and the use of eastern paper.

f. 355v is blank apart from some later notes

Physical Description

Form: codex
Support: ff. 240-355 Eastern paper
Extent: 175 × 125-136 mm.

Collation

This part consists of 16 quires. The reconstruction of a few quires in the collation presented here is conjectural, but on this basis this part contains three ternia and one single bifolio, while the rest of the quires are quaternia. Quire 34 (ff. 249-256) is bound out of order and should follow Quire 35 (ff. 257-263 and the last folio belonging to this quire, now misplaced as f. 248).

  • Quire 338-2+3 ff. 240-248 The first and last original folios of this quire have been lost, but subsequently replaced with substitutes; the detached last folio of Quire 35 has been added to the end of this quire.
  • Quire 348 ff. 249-256
  • Quire 358-1 ff. 257-263 The last folio of this quire has been detached and added to Quire 32.
  • Quire 368 ff. 264-271
  • Quire 376 ff. 272-277
  • Quires 38-458 ff. 278-341
  • Quire 46-476 ff. 342-353
  • Quire 482 ff. 354-355

Layout

ff. 241r-246v, 248r-355r A single column of 21-23 lines. 139 × 90 mm.

Hand(s)

ff. 241r-246v and 248r-355r were copied by Hand G in calligraphic mixed minuscule script with variable slant, in black ink, with significant variation in letter size and frequent flourishing of tails into the margin.

Syllabic abbreviations and superscript word endings appear throughout the line. Breathings are round and mute iota is subscript or absent. There is decorative use of the double dot, and accentuation of all nomina sacra . Accents are sometimes joined to letters, breathings, and nomina sacra strokes.

The flat-bottomed omega and loop epsilon are present, and there are inclusions of letters within omicron.

Punctuation used includes the middle and upper points, lower and middle commas, question mark and full stop.

Headings are written in Alexandrine majuscule style in red ink.

Decoration

Texts begin with ornamented minor initials in red ink, and some sections with simpler minor initials in red ink.

Transitions between texts are marked by vignettes in red or brown and red ink.

Additions

There are occasional pen-trials and brief marginal notes in Greek by various hands (e.g. ff. 251r, 293v-294r, 346v).

History

Origin: This part was probably copied in the 14th century, as suggested by the style of script and the use of eastern paper.
