Contents

Introduction: The manuscript contains a large selection of works by the Greek rhetor Aelius Aristides (ca. 118-181 CE). He was a leading exponent of the Second Sophistic, a Greek philosophical-literary current developed in Asia Minor during the imperial age, between the end of the 1st and the 4th century CE. On the upper margin of p. 1, the author is erroneously referred to as "Aristotelis Rhetor". The manuscript was copied between the end of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th century, by a single scribe who added the title and decoration in red ink. The first and last folios of all quires were originally parchment, but not all have survived. The text appears to be defective in several places, both because of the loss of some folios and because of the scribe, who in one case (pp. 45-[46]) tried to fill the gap. It was donated to the Trinity College in 1738 by Roger Gale, the eldest son of the Fellow of Trinity and Dean of York Thomas Gale, who was also an antiquarian. It is the no. 99 in C.A. Behr's list of Aristides' manuscripts. Dr Matteo Di Franco

Physical Description

Form: codex
Support: pp. 1-433, western paper, folded in folio. Watermark: Eagle ( 50 × 47 mm. ) middle of the folio comparable to Briquet, Aigle 91 . The majority of those examples are dated between the end of the 15th century and the beginning of 16th century. pp. 21-[22], 39-[42], 55-[58], 71-[74], 91-[94], 111-[114], 129-[130], 149-[152], 169-[172], 187-[188], 205-[208], 225-[228], 245-[248], 265-[266], 283-[286], 303-[306], 323-[326], 343-[346], 363-[366], 383-[386], 403-[406], 423-[426], parchment, medium thickness, mid quality, used as outermost folios of quires.
Extent: Codex: ii + 217 + ii leaves. 330 × 224 mm.
Foliation: [i-ii] + 1-[434] + [iii-iv]; modern pagination in black ink in Arabic numerals, rectos (absent on versos), upper right.

Collation

The manuscript consists of 21 quinions (18 complete) and 3 quaternions:
  • 2 paper endleaves
  • Quires 1-210 pp. 1-[40]
  • Quires 3-48 pp. 41-[72]
  • Quires 5-910 pp. 73-[170] (the second half of third bifolio, pp. 45-[46] was substituited by the scriber)
  • Quire 1010-2 pp. 73-[186] (the third and the last folios are missing)
  • Quires 11-1410 pp. 187-[266]
  • Quire 1510-1 pp. 267-[284] (the first folio is missing)
  • Quires 16-2210 pp. 285-[424]
  • Quire 2310-5 pp. 425-[434] (only the first half is preserved)
Quire signatures in Greek numerals from γ to κγ (the latter wrongly marked as κζ) on the first recto and lower margin of last verso of each quire, starting from p. 21. On the first recto the figures occur in the upper centre and lower margins of the first folio; Greek numerals in the upper centre margin are repeated twice and frequently preceded or written between the words of the invocation‘ιυ χε’ (Ἰησοῦ Χρίστε), also present elsewhere, e.g. p. 25. The quire signatures are probably original to the production of the volume, but they have frequently been lost to trimming. On pp. 365 and 385 the figures κα and κβ have been written by a modern hand in pencil.

Condition

The corners of the book block are worn and rounded; some leaves have also been torn and repaired at the time of the binding with paper patches:
  • pp. 1-11 damaged along inside edge.
  • pp. 73-[74] and 155-[158] margins have been cut off.
  • pp. 159-[160] margin is torn.
  • pp. 185-[186] rectangular piece cut out of the upper corner.
  • pp. 265-[270] lower corner has been cut off.
  • pp. 327-[328] margin has been cut off.
  • pp. 371-[372] and 381-[382] rectangular piece missing from lower corner.

Layout

pp. 1-[434]: written space 230 × 130 mm. Main text in a single column, 38 lines per page.

Hand(s)

The main text is written in a mixed minuscule in an upright, scribal hand, in brown ink script.

There is a marked variation in letter size. Syllabic abbreviations and superscript word endings are rarely used. Breathings are curved and mute iota is absent. Majuscule letterforms are rare; beta is modern, ny baroque (p. [12]). Pi is in omega-shape, tau is tall with an eyelet, and ligated from below to the next letter.

The accents are not ligated to the letters, except for the circumflex with ypsilon and omega. The threma is not used consistently. The ligatures are often elaborate and with different eyelets; the rho-omicron ligature is "a staffa". On pp. 145-[146] the same hand copies the text but with a much larger form and more expansively, in order to occupy the available space.

The same hand has written the titles in red ink.

Decoration

The beginning of the texts or sections from p. 39 is preceded by rectangular frieze in red or red and yellow ink in various styles.

The thick red-yellow-ink major initials mark the start of a new work or a new book section.

The explicits of some texts are followed by ornamental line fillers drawn in red ink (e.g. p. [274], [292], [310]).

Additions

Index of contents added on f. [i] recto by Peter Dobree .

The beginnings of folios of the Panathenaic were marked on inner margins with the correspondence with the page and the line from the Iuntine edition (Florence 1517) in red ink (e.g. p. 5: 11.a.3 = charta 11 recto line 3; p. [6]: 11.a.14 a f. = charta 11 recto line 14 a fine "from the end") or from P. Stephanus (Geneve 1604) in black ink (e.g. p. [2]).

Binding

Light brown skin over paste-laminate boards, leather label on spine with title tooled in gold.

445 × 335 × 45 mm.

Accompanying Material

A note on the wrong title of the manuscript is glued on f. [ii] verso.

History

Origin: The combination of watermarks suggests that the manuscript was produced between the end of 15th century and the beginning of 16th century. This is consistent with the characteristics of the script.

Provenance and Acquisition

Owned by the antiquarian Thomas Gale (c. 1635-1702) , Fellow of Trinity and Dean of York. It is not present in the list of Gale's manuscripts in Bernard, Catalogi librorum manuscriptorum Angliæ et Hiberniæ (1697) .

Donated to Trinity College by Thomas's son Roger Gale (1672-1744) in 1738.
