A catalogue of Western manuscripts and papyri at Cambridge University Library, the Fitzwilliam Museum and selected Cambridge colleges

Cambridge, Trinity College, MS O.3.1

Diktyon no.: Diktyon 11978

Contents

Introduction: The manuscript contains the Commentary on the orations of Gregory of Nazianzus by the Byzantine theologian Nicetas of Herakleia (ca. 1050-after 1117). It is formed by two contemporary parts, both containing the commentary with the text of two different sets of orations. The parts are distinguishable on the basis of the script, the watermarks of the paper, the layout and the quires' numbering (which in part II starts again from no. 1). Part I (ff. vii-xi, 1-291) was copied by a group of seven scribes, who constantly alternate in the copying of the text. Among them there is Nikolaos Choniates, a well known scribe and dealer of manuscript from Monemvasia, who was active in Italy in the second half of the 16th century, where he was the head of a prolific atelier. In this manuscript Choniates seems to have a sort of guide role: he started the copying and realized the majority of the rubrics. Among the scribes who copied the texts with him in this manuscript there are also some of his known collaborators, such as Iohannes Chonianos (see Gamillscheg 1980). Part II (ff. 292-525) was copied by three hands: two of them are found also in part I, Nikolaos Choniates and hand C. The third is another well-known prolific scribe and dealer of manuscripts of the 16th century, Andreas Darmarios, who copied the beginning of the text, some rubrics and titles. The fact that some scribes worked in both parts (Nikolaos Choniates and hand C), and that the rubrics in both refer to the parts as a "first" and "second book", suggest that probably, although copied independently, the parts of this manuscript were conceived to be together. Physical Description

Form: codex
Extent: Codex: vii + 529 + ii leaves. 306 × 210 mm.
Foliation:

Modern pencil foliation, in Latin and Arabic numerals, in the upper margin, right: i-xi + 1-525 + [xii]-[xiii]. Ff. i, iii-vii, [xii]-[xiii] are later endleaves; f. ii is a smaller, paper leaf, pasted on f. iii, added to the manuscript (see Accompanying material); ff. viii-xi, although foliated in Latin numerals, are not endleaves, but belong to the original manuscript.

Collation

16+1 | 26, 36-1, 48+1, 5-148, 15 8-1, 16-258, 264, 27-398| 404, 41-688, 696 | ff. [xii]-[xiii]

Condition

The manuscript is in fair condition. The lost upper part of f. i has been replaced with paper. There are extensive water and humidity stains throughout. In part II, ff. 296-525 have been trimmed heavily: the countermark of the watermark, placed in the corner of the leaves, is entirely visible only on f. 431, the external margin of which has been preserved and has been folded to adapt it to the dimensions of the other leaves.

Additions

On the left pastedown are written, in brown ink, an older shelfmark, ‘ O.17.3’, which has been erased, the present shelfmark, ‘ O.3.1 ’, and the old mark ‘ A.56’, also erased.

On f. iii recto a later hand wrote in Latin a list of manuscripts containing works by Gregory of Nazianzus in British collections.

In the upper margin of f. viii recto is written the old shelfmark ‘ O.17.3’, which has been erased. In the upper part of the leaf, right, is visible a Greek letter (or number?), ‘ μ’.

Binding

Western early modern binding; full leather cover over pasteboards. Blind tooling on both boards, a triple-fillet rectangle with an ornamental motif at the centre. On the spine, which has been rebacked, are pasted three paper labels with the shelfmark. 315 × 215 × 93 mm.

Rebacked. The cover is worn and shows several scratches.

Accompanying Material

A small paper leaf, f. ii, ( 195 × 160 mm. ) has been pasted on f. iii. It contains a table of contents ( pinax) of a manuscript, written in Greek by a scribe of western European origin (the script is probably datable in the 17th c.). The manuscript, the contents of which are listed, also contains the commentary on Gregory of Nazianzus by Nicetas of Herakleia. The order of the orations is not the same as in MS O.3.1. In the upper part of the leaf there is a note, ‘ Coll. Sion’, which possibly indicates that the manuscript in question was part of the collection of Sion College Library (London).

ff. i, iii-vii and ff. [xii]-[xiii] are later endleaves. They all show the same watermark in the form of a hand with a lily, surmounted by a six-point star ( 55 × 15 mm. ). Ff. i, iii-vii have been folded in folio, ff. [xii]-[xiii] in quarto.

History

Provenance and Acquisition

The manuscript was owned by Isaac Casaubon (1559-1614) (see Craster 1926-1928, p. 99, no. 29; Calvié 2020, p. 160).

It was subsequently part of the collection of the English classical scholar and antiquarian Thomas Gale (ca. 1635-1702) . It is identifiable in the list of Gale's manuscripts published by E. Bernard, Catalogi librorum manuscriptorum Angliae et Hiberniae, 2, Oxoniae (1697), p. 185, no. 5856[22], ‘ Nicetae Episcopi Serrarum et Heracleae adnotationes in Gregorii Theologi Orationes, collatae etiam cum alio MS’).

The manuscript was donated to Trinity College by Roger Gale (1672-1744) in 1738. In the right margin of f. x recto is pasted the Trinity College bookplate. Stamps of Trinity College Library are present on ff. x recto, 291v, 292r, 522v.

This script is smaller, more regular and less developed vertically compared to Choniates' script, but is sometimes difficult to distinguish it from it. Thick minor initials in red ink, see e.g. f. xi recto.

On f. x verso the text forms a cul-de-lampe, with ornamental motifs formed by three dots in red ink at both ends of the text lines.

History

Origin: This part of the manuscript was copied by a group of scribes, who worked together, probably in Venice; ; on the basis of the scripts and of the watermarks, the copy cen be dated to the 1560s.
