Medieval Manuscripts in Cambridge Libraries

A catalogue of Western manuscripts and papyri at Cambridge University Library, the Fitzwilliam Museum and selected Cambridge colleges

Cambridge, Trinity College, MS O.2.54

Diktyon no.: Diktyon 11976

Contents

Introduction: Trinity College, MS O.2.54 collects together various transcriptions, made between the 1620s and 1640s, of Libanius, Phoebammo, Artemidorus Capito and fables from different manuscripts. All the transcriptions, with exception of Phoebammo (ff. 132r-145v), were made by Patrick Young (1584-1652, also known as Patricius Junius), who was royal librarian to King James VI and I, and King Charles I. The four parts copied by Young (Parts I, III-V) appear to have been brought together in a single volume at an early stage, and the division into parts is suggested by the notes, the different sizes of the paper, the presence of blank leaves which were to serve as endleaves, and watermarks. On the other hand, ff. 132r-145v (Part II) were copied by a scribe with affinities to the model of Angelos Bergikios or Konstantinos Palaiokappa. Some of Patrick Young's library was acquired by Thomas Gale, Fellow of Trinity and Dean of York, and eventually donated to the Trinity College by his eldest son Roger Gale in 1738.
