Two series of quire signatures in Greek numerals are present: the first is in black ink on first folio recto of quires, lower margin and a small cross on upper margin, subsequent to the production of the manuscript; where missing, this has been completed by a later (Western?) hand in pencil: it survives on quires 1 (ζον), 2 (η in pencil), 3 (θον), 4 (ιον), 5-7 (ια-ιγ in pencil), 8 (ιδʹ), 10-13 (ιϛʹ-ιθ), 16-22 (κβʹ-κηʹ), 24-27 (λʹ-λγʹ).
The second series is in pencil first folio recto of quires, lower hand-right corner, and it present on quires 16-20 (ιβ-ιϛ), and 24 (κ).
Condition
ff. 1-9, 77 and [127a] are fragments of original paper. The first 32 leaves are damaged and have lost the upper margin. Some stains and wormholes are present throughout the manuscript. Folio 90v is stained with black ink.
Layout
ff. 10r-204v: written space 105 × 75 mm. 13-19 lines per page
Hand(s)
Theodoros : the manuscript was copied by Theodoros (RGK I 134, PLP 7414) from Constantinople, active in the fourth quarter of the 15th century in a mixed minuscule script, upright, in brown ink, with evident variation in letter size. Theodoros' script is characterized by a large mushroom-shaped pi. The same hand has added the title, the chapter headings in the same style, in red ink.
Syllabic abbreviations and superscript word endings usually appear only at the end of lines, but occasionally elsewhere. Breathings are round, accents are occasionally ligated to letters, and mute iota is absent. Punctuation used includes the middle and upper points, lower and middle commas and full stop.
Decoration
Major heapieces with branching scroll in red ink on ff. 37v, 54r, 73r, 85r, 108v, 138r, 167v, 185r, 187r, 194r; rope-motif in an ornated rectangle on f. 189v. Knots and rope-motif headpieces in red or dark yellow ink at every section of the main Lexicon and texts from f. 7v. Some headpiece have a snake head: ff. 34r, 68r, 162r.
Decorated initials are present at every section of the contents from f. 7v.
Coloured minor initials are present throughout the manuscript.
Some diagrams by the copyist in faded red ink on ff. 195r-195v. A later hand added a picture of a plant of Venus on f. 201v.
Additions
Current classmark and previous ones are on f. [ii] recto; on the same folio a reader (Patrick Young?) noted the similarity of the Lexicon with that of Hesychius and the Suda, and a Western hand wrote ‘ἴασων in Ἄψ. Θεολόγος in Ἀσχημοσύνην’.
Patrick Young (1584-1652) collated the manuscritp and added notes, e.g. f. 178r.
Binding
Binding by Douglas Cockerell and Son ((i.e. Sydney Morris ('Sandy') Cockerell (1906-1987)), dated 1983 by note attached to f. [vi] verso.
The manuscript has been rebacked, reusing the 18th-century leather for board covering. The original spine is stuck on the right pastedown. Boards are in full tanned calfskin, the spine in tanned goatskin.
158 × 123 × 47 mm.
