The portion of the colophon quoted here after the scribe's name, describing the manuscript's donation to the Monastery of the Theotokos of the Cave in Chios, has been struck through; a further three and a half lines, which probably proclaim a curse on anyone who deprives the monastery of the manuscript, have been largely erased.

Condition
Layout
A single column of 28 lines. 128 × 85 mm.
Hand(s)
The main text of ff. 1r-186r, 187r-363v was copied by the hieromonachos Iakovos (Hand A) (RGK I, 146; PLP 7894) in an archaising mixed minuscule script, with slightly variable slant but on average upright, in black ink. There is minimal variation in letter size.
Breathings are round and mute iota is usually absent, but occasionally adscript (e.g. f. 108r, line 20). There is occasional decorative use of the double dot. Accents are sometimes joined to abbreviations. On ff. 1r-160v (the Gospels) syllabic abbreviations and superscript word endings appear only at the end of lines, except in the top line, and Nomina sacra are accentuated only when more than three letters long. On ff. 161r-186r, 187r-363v (summary lectionary), syllabic abbreviations and superscript word endings appear throughout the line, and there is accentuation of all lengths of nomina sacra .
Punctuation used includes the lower, middle and upper points, lower comma, question mark and full stop.
The main text of f. 186v was copied by Hand B in a somewhat inelegant mixed minuscule script, with variable slant, in black ink. There is little variation in letter size.
Breathings are round and mute iota is absent. Syllabic abbreviations and superscript word endings throughout the line, and there is accentuation of all lengths of nomina sacra .
Punctuation used includes the middle and upper points, lower comma and question mark.
The rubric was added by Hand C in mixed minuscule script, in red ink.
Breathings are round and mute iota is absent. There is accentuation of all lengths of nomina sacra . Accents are sometimes joined to letters and abbreviations. The hyphen is used to merge words.
The modern nu is present.
Decoration
The beginning of the Gospel text (f. 1r) is preceded by a crude rectangular headpiece in red ink. The beginning of the text of the Acts (f. 176r) and of the Epistles (f. 241r) are preceded by more elegant rectangular headpieces in red ink; the latter also contains yellow infill.
The beginning of many sections is preceded by simple vignettes in red ink. Those preceding Gospels (ff. 48r, 79r) are crude, while others are more elegant.
The text of each book begins with a relatively small ornamented major initial in red ink.
The beginning of sections is marked by simple minor initials in red ink.
The end of some sections is accompanied by line-fillers in red ink, sometimes with yellow infill (e.g. ff. 228v-229r).
Additions
As part of the original production of the manuscript, the scribe has added marginal κεφάλαιον (chapter) numbers in black ink and Ammonian section numbers in red ink for the Gospels, and κεφάλαιον numbers in red ink for the Acts and Epistles. (The black numbers have previously been incorrectly identified as Eusebian canon numbers: Turyn, Dated Greek Manuscripts, p. 81.) Marginal lection notes in red ink were also provided, with ἀρχὴ and τέλος marks indicating the beginning and end of lections in spaces left blank for the purpose in the text.
Occasional additional lection notes in Greek have been added by other hands.
Running headers in Greek indicating the current Gospel have been marked on each folio, verso, upper left, for Matthew and Mark.
Where text was lost due to a hole through ff. 174-175, 176-182, a later hand supplied the missing text in the margin. There appears to have been a subsequent attempt to erase these additions, presumably because they had become superfluous after the holes were patched and the lost text copied onto the patches.
Notes in Latin marking the beginning of each chapter have been added in the upper corner of the relevant folio throughout, probably by F.H.A. Scrivener.
There is a note on f. [ii] recto recording the collation of the manuscript by F.H.A. Scrivener, recording his collation of the text in February 1854.
A note on f. [i] recto records the manuscript's donation by Bentley, citing the catalogue of M.R. James.
Binding
18th-century full leather binding over couched-laminate boards, with plain pastedowns. Leather page-marker tabs indicate the beginning of texts. There is decorative blind tooling in a lozenge pattern on the edges of the boards, and gold tooling on the spine. The title ‘Quatuor Evangelia Graece MSS’ is tooled in gold on a red label on the spine, and the classmark appears on patches.
195 × 145 × 84 mm.
The tailband is split and both it and the headband are partially detached. The spine covering is split in line with the split in the tailband
