Condition
Layout
Two columns of 31 lines. 242 × 185 mm. Pricking survives in all three margins, but some has been lost to cropping. Ruled in hardpoint, system Leroy 1, type 32C2. Text hangs from the lines.
Hand(s)
The manuscript was copied in an upright mixed minuscule Perlschrift, in brown ink, with little variation in letter size. There is quite frequent flourishing of tails into the margin, often decorated with X-shapes.
Syllabic abbreviations and superscript word endings appear only at the end of lines. Breathings are both angular and round, but do not appear in the half-H form. Mute iota is adscript or absent. Use of the double dot is functional only, and nomina sacra are accentuated only when more than three letters long or with enclitics. They are occasionally uncontracted (e.g. f. 13r, col. a, lines 19-20). The double grave accent and marginal quotation marks are in use. Circumflexes appear above breathings in enlarged form.
The flat-bottomed omega and theta with a bar on the central stroke are present.
Punctuation used includes the lower, middle and upper points, lower comma, question mark and full stop.
Headings are written in Alexandrine majuscule script, in red ink.
Decoration
The beginning of each text is preceded by a thin rectangular headpiece in red ink.
Each text begins with a decorated major initial in red ink. The beginning of sections is marked by minor initials in red ink.
Additions
The scribe has written the liturgical date for each text in the margin on its first folio.
There are very occasional brief annotations in Greek by other hands (e.g. f. 1r). One has copied the opening lines of the text on f. 107r in the originally blank right-hand column of f. 106v. Similarly, the opening lines of the text on f. 266r have been copied on the otherwise blank facing page, f. 265v, and another hand has copied the opening words of this passage above this.
Binding
18th-century full leather binding over couched-laminate boards, with plain pastedowns. There is decorative blind tooling on the edges of the boards. Rebacked spine with decorative gold tooling and the title ‘Vitae Sanctorum MSS’ tooled in gold on a red label. The classmark appears on patches on the spine. Leather tabs of page markers survive in whole or in part on the edge of folios where each text begins (e.g. ff. 67, 77). A word has been written on the head-edge, probably ‘Οκτοβριο’. (The spelling is suggested by analogy to MS B.9.14, from the same provenance.)
390 × 315 × 113 mm.
The binding has been rebacked.
