Condition
Layout
A single column of 30 lines 230 × 130 mm.
Hand(s)
ff.1r-314r Hand A: the texts have been written by Bartolomeo Zanetti (1486/1487-1547 at least) (Bartholomaeus Zanettus, RGK I, 31; on the scribe see also RGK II 43; RGK III, 56)
The text is written in brown ink; titles and initials in red.
The scribe wrote a few marginal annotations.
Decoration
On f. 1r there is a simple undulated linear frieze with clover-leaves at both ends.
Initials in ekthesis in red ink are decorated with a simple vegetal motif, see e.g. f. 17v.
Additions
On the left pastedown are written the present shelfmark, ‘ B.4.10’, and two other, which have been erased, ‘ C.4.24’ and ‘ B.IV.9’.
On f. [i] recto there is an indication about the contents in the upper part of the leaf, ‘ Epistolae Cyrilli ad Nestorium itemque Nestorii ad Cyrillum vid. pag, seq. 5 ’. Below, there is a signature, ‘ C.4.24’
Passim there are modern pencil annotations containing indications about a few blank lines left by the scribe: f. 197r ‘ Suppl. ex libro impresso p. 181’ (a similar case occurs on f. 204r).
Binding
Western early modern binding, full parchment cover over pasteboards. Blind tooling on both covers: a rectangular frame filled with a vegetal motif of palmettes. On the left cover there is a vegetal ornament in the centre of the frame. The edges are painted in red. On the spine are glued three paper labels with the shelfmark. 370 × 250 × 75 mm.
The cover is damaged and worn out around the edges, and there are scraps and some stains.
History
The manuscript was copied in the first half of the 16th century by the scribe and printer Bartolomeo Zanetti, in Italy.
Provenance and Acquisition
In all likelihood, the manuscript was donated to Trinity College Library by Thomas Nevile (ca. 1548-1615) , Master of Trinity College and Dean of Canterbury, in the years 1611-1612 (for the provenance from Nevile, see James (1900), pp. xxii and 147; for the date of the donation see P. Gaskell, Trinity College Library: the first 150 years. The Sandars Lectures 1978-9 (Cambridge, 1980), p. 81). On the left pastedown is pasted the Trinity College bookplate. Stamps of Trinity College Library are present on ff. 1r, 6r, 314r.
