Introduction:
This manuscript is a copy of Nova Statuta, the English royal statutes from the first
year of the reign of Edward III (reigned 1327-1377) to the twenty-third year of the
reign of Henry VI (1445; he reigned
1422-1461, 1470-1471). It is a fundamental text of English common law.
Many copies of these statutes were made in the latter half of the 15th century. This
was a time of political
unrest when landowners were driven to use their legal knowledge to protect their interests.
This manuscript is in French, which was the main language of common law until the
English Civil War (1642-1651).
Folios 4v-27v and 289v-313r are blank.
