Psalter ('The Southampton Psalter')

Contents

Introduction: This manuscript, probably dating from the tenth century, contains the Gallican version of the psalms, followed by canticles - chants drawn from the text of the Bible. It also features numerous interlinear and marginal glosses, both derived from patristic commentaries as well as contributions from the copyists themselves. These guide the reader's interpretation of the text and explain or elaborate upon certain words or passages. These annotations are mostly written in Latin, like the text they accompany, however some are written in Middle Gaelic and are thus of particular interest to researchers of the medieval Irish language. The psalms are divided into three sections of fifty psalms each - known as 'Na Trí Coícait' or 'The Three Fifties' - an arrangement common in Gaelic psalters but originating in patristic sources and promoted by Cassiodorus, whose writings suggest that it may owe its origins to the simple convenience of dividing a lengthy book. The beginning of each section is marked by a decorated initial and border, and is accompanied across the opening by a full-page illustration of a scene or scenes from the Bible - but not of the text they face. The depiction of the Crucifixion on f. 35v of this manuscript and on p. 266 of St Gallen, Stiftsbibliothek, Cod. Sang. 51 are the only two extant treatments of this subject in pre-Norman Irish art. The pattern of decoration is consistent throughout the volume, suggesting a work planned with the visual in mind, though possibly influenced by the exemplar on which it drew. That exemplar is unknown, presumably lost, and the precise location and date of the manuscript's manufacture are likewise obscure. Little is known of the manuscript's mmedieval provenance until it was recorded in 1389 as part of the library of Dover Priory by one of its monks, John Whitfield. The presence of 12th-century annotations by an English hand led Patrick O'Neill to suggest that it may have come to Dover via Canterbury. Its 16th-century provenance is certainly suggestive of its continued presence in the south-east of England: the name 'R. Benet' that is inscribed on one of the opening pages may be the same person recorded around that time as mayor of Romney, another of the Cinque Ports. In any case, the manuscript's epithet - 'The Southampton Psalter' - is misleading, as it has no connection with the place Southampton, and although conveyed to St John's College by the Earl of Southampton, it came from the library of his friend William Crashaw rather than his own collection. History

Origin: Late 10th or early 11th century. ; Ireland.

Provenance and Acquisition

Recorded in the catalogue of Dover Piory compiled in 1389 by one of its monks, John Whitfield (fl. 1389) (see James (1903), p. 523). The Dover pressmark and title appear on f. 3r: 'A : V : .i. Psalerium vetus glosatum ydiomate incognito ... apprehendite disciplina ... 105 ... I', indicating its storage in the first place on the fifth shelves of its class, 'A'. The pressmark and title are repeated on f. iii verso. The presence of twelfth-century corrections in an English hand has led P.P. O'Neill to suggest that the manuscript may have arrived in Dover from Canterbury.

'Jhon ?Hurtwell?Hurtwell, John, fl. 16th century pbr': a partially erased ?ownership inscription by a hand of the 16th century (f. 5r).

'R Benet': ?ownership inscription by a 16th-century hand (f. 1v). Perhaps the same R. BenetBenet, R., fl. 16th century who is recorded in that century as mayor of Romney (like Dover, one of the Cinque Ports) and 'who would have been well-positioned to profit from the break-up of St Martin's [i.e. Dover Priory's] library' (O'Neill (2012), p. xiii). Benet's name is found in five other manuscripts at St John's - MSS C.18, D.2, D.13, D.22 and E.9 - all of which were collected by William Crashaw (see Acquisition).

Given to St John’s College in 1635 by Thomas Wriothesley, 4th Earl of Southampton on behalf of William Crashaw and Henry Wriothesley, 3rd Earl of Southampton . A bookplate recording the Crashaw-Wriothesley donation is present on the front pastedown.
