Psalterium cum Hymnis

Contents

Introduction: This thirteenth-century Benedictine Psalter with hymns contains a calendar (with instructions for calculating the date of the full moon), psalms, and other religious texts in Latin. It concludes with a cycle of hymns for use throughout the course of a year. Books of psalms and hymns such as this were essential tools for medieval clergy who were expected to memorise their content. It has been speculated that this beautiful and neatly produced volume is of monastic provenance owing to its inclusion of a Hymn to St Benedict, which would be unusual to find in any other context. Queens' MS 29 came to the Library when John Cabourne gave it as a gift on his matriculation to the College in 1632. The fact that Cabourne himself came from Lincolnshire, together with other stylistic traits within the volume have led some to deduce an East Anglian provenance for the volume.

Additions

[Recipe] Calami aromatici [etc.]'. Then a carefully erased note of which a line and a half remains: 'usque finem pasche proxime future anno domini mo. cccmo. nonagesimo quarto [etc.]'. Some notes, possibly in the same hand, have been erased in the Kalendar.

At the foot of ii recto a two-line note, ending 'parte way', has been erased. Above, more erased scribbles include the name 'Broune'. Pen-trials on i recto include the name 'Markham'. At the foot of vi recto 'Herisforde' in a sixteenth-century hand.

F. B recto has a title added in a 17th-century hand: 'Psalterium Lat.' and, in a different hand, name of 'Johannes Caborne' (John Cabourne) is inscribed twice. The same hand has written a long note in English on f. C verso on the method of calculating the changes of the moon from the Kalendar, and Roman numerals next to each day throughout the Kalendar.
