Cambridge, Gonville and Caius College, MS 407/413
A treatise on preaching and several medical texts
Physical Description
20th- or 21st-century foliation
i-iv | 1-[87a stub] | 88-[115] | [116]-[206] | [v] - [viii]
Foliated in pencil in Hindu-Arabic numerals in the upper outer corner of each front endleaf, the first recto of each quire in Part 2 and the first leaf of Part 3.
There are several different medieval and modern foliation schemas present in this manuscript. For the production of this online CUDL record, the modern pencil foliation ff. i-iv + 1-88 was extended as ff. [89]-[206] + [v]-[viii], with all numbers assigned during the production of this electronic record being enclosed in [square brackets]. Please note that M. R. James created and used a different foliation schema in the preparation of his Catalogue record, with the foliation sequence restarting at f. 1 in each Part.Medieval foliation
2-15 (for ff. iii-iv + 1-12)
Foliated in ink in typical medieval forms of Hindu-Arabic numerals in the upper outer corner of each recto of ff. iii recto - 12v. This medieval sequence is written in large numbers in a light brown ink and is not a close visual match for any of the other medieval foliation sequences present in the volume. This sequence demonstrates that Parts 1 and 2 have been together since the medieval period.
Medieval foliation
3-30 (for ff. iv + 1-27)
Foliated in ink in typical medieval forms of Hindu-Arabic numerals in the lower outer corner of each recto of ff. iv recto - 27v. This medieval sequence is written in a dark brown ink and is not a close visual match for any of the other medieval foliation sequences present in the volume. This sequence demonstrates that Parts 1 and 2 have been together since the medieval period.
Medieval foliation
1-2 (for ff. 88-[89])
Foliated in ink in Hindu-Arabic numerals in the upper outer corner of each recto of ff. 88-[89]. This medieval sequence is written in a dark brown ink and is not a close visual match for any of the other medieval foliation sequences present in the volume.
Medieval foliation
1-27, 29-37, 37-91 (for ff. [116]-[206])
Foliated in ink in the typical medieval forms of Hindu-Arabic numerals in the upper outer corner of each recto of ff. [116] recto - [206] verso. This medieval sequence is written in a dark brown ink and is not a close visual match for any of the other medieval foliation sequences present in the volume. There are several mistakes in this foliation sequence.

Quire signatures in the bottom right-hand corner of the recto side of the first leaf of each quire of Parts 2-4, written in pencil by a hand of the 19th/20th century. The quire numbering restarts in each Part (i.e., Part 2: '1-11'; Part 3: '1-3'; Part 4: '1-6').
Binding
Medieval binding, perhaps 14th-century. Rebacked and repaired after 1908.
Covers are undecorated whitened skin over wood boards with bevelled edges. Remains of a hook-and-catch type fastening visible as damage in the centre of the fore edge of each board. Spine rebacked in light brown leather; five raised bands visible and two half bands tangible. No head or tail bands or tabs visible. Two small printed paper labels fixed to the spine, one '413' and the other '407' for the current shelfmark. Inner faces of both boards visible; front pastedown lifted and now f. i, back pastedown gone, but offset on the turn in suggests that it was another leaf of the booklet used for the endleaves (ff. i-iv and [v]-[viii]. Front board repaired or recycled in the middle ages as the board has five lacing channels along the fore edge of its inner face, all with signs of use, suggesting that the board was rotated 180° and then replaced in its current position.
Goville and Caius College bookplate on f. i recto and iv verso.
Two titles in ink in an early modern hand on the front cover, both badly rubbed. The first, 'Tract pro Con...(?)uris; the second, 'Medicinalia permulsa(?)'. 'Dietarum otonis' in ink on the rear cover in a medieval hand.

Notes for sermons in branching diagrams. All endleaves (ff. i-iv and [v]-[viii]) from the same source manuscript and now divided into 4 front endleaves, and four back endleaves. The four front endleaves have been placed into the volume upside down. All textleaves have lost text due to trimming.
Physical Description
Collation
No quire signatures particular to this Part.
No catchwords particular to this Part.Condition
Layout
150 × 115 mm. Ruled in leadpoint, frame and lines. Ruled in double-column format, 32 lines to the column and written above top line. Although the leaves are prepared with a formal layout structure, the text placement does not totally conform to the ruling.
Hand(s)
The notes for sermons are written in a northern European textualis libraria.
Decoration
Small sketch of a bust in profile in ink in the inner margin of f. i verso, now badly damaged.
Additions
Erased note, perhaps an ownership inscription on f. iv verso. The inscription is partially legible under U.V. light and includes the words 'johannes stukey magistri 1439'. A possible candidate for the author of the inscription is a medieval author known as 'John Meare' (or Mears), of Stukey, but his biographical details are not fully established. In his history of the city of Norwich, Francis Blomfield records a monk of Norwich Cathedral Priory: ‘'John Meare, or Mears, of Stukey, [...] D. D. of the University of Oxford, [who] flourished in the reign of King Edward IV. He wrote a book of sermons; and four books on the Master of the Sentences, which were preserved in the library of his monastery.'’ Johannes Stukey is also listed in Emden's A Biographical Register of the University of Oxford p. 1809, and is described as an author with theological works attributed to him, but Emden fixes that Stukey with dates of activity in the first half of the 14th century. Further work is needed to establish the context of the Johannes Stukey inscription in this manuscript.

Part 4: Medical Texts (M. R. James Part III) [Cambridge, Gonville and Caius College, MS 407/413, ff. [116]-[206]]
Contents
Language(s): Latin
The text on f. [116] recto is illegible, either through extensive rubbing or deliberate erasure. The opening of the text given here is taken from f. [116] verso.
Text on the lower half of f. [120] verso erased.
This text is attributed to a 'Bernard' in the manuscript, but is known to be by Lanfranc of Milan. Lanfranc addresses the treatise to his friend Bernard, and so that is probably the source of the incorrect attribution.
Text erased from the lower half of f. [143] recto.
It is not clear how many of the previous items are included in the 'summa' of the final rubric.
It is possible that this is a preface to the final item in this Part rather than a separate item.
It is possible that this is a preface to the final item in this Part rather than a separate item.
The opening of this text is not distinguised in the way many of the other texts are in this Part, but the incipit appears to cue the text to which the explicit refers. The previous two items may have been intended as prefaces to this text.
