Contents

Introduction: The manuscript is a volume formed by ten independent parts, collected and united by John Caius (1510-1573), forming a Collection of Greek medical texts. Caius wrote notes in the margins of some of the medical texts, a list of contents of the volume (where, interestingly, he defines the parts of the manuscript as "books"), and titles at the beginning of most of the parts. Part I (ff. i, 1-95) contains two texts by Galen, De symptomatum differentiis and De symptomatum causis libri III. As written in a note on f. 90v, the text was copied by a certain Iohannes Babamos (possibly Vaban? Vauban?), in Paris, possibly in the first half of the 16th century (see also RGK I, 159). John Caius made corrections to the text (hand a, see also Gundert 2009, p. 67, and Nutton 1987, p. 65). Part II (ff. 96-119) includes two texts by Hippocrates, Aphorismi and Prognosticon, probably written in the first half of the 16th century. Part III (ff. 120-134) was probably also produced in the same period. It also contains a portion of the Aphorismi, copied by another hand, with marginal notes by John Caius. Both parts IV (ff. 135-142) and V (ff. 143-150) contain Galen's work De usu pulsuum, copied by two different scribes, both probably in the first half of the 16th century. The text in part V is incomplete. In part VI (ff. 151-158) there are a few texts about the nature of the human being. Part VII (ff. 159-186) contains the 12th book of Flavius Josephus' Jewish Antiquities, copied by Ioannes Serbopoulos, a Greek scribe active in England around 1484-1500 (see RGK I, 180). There are various lacunae in the text, because of the loss of quires and leaves: four quires are missing between ff. 166-167, one between ff. 178-179; two leaves are missing between ff. 169-170, one between ff. 173-174 and another between ff. 177-178. The eighth and ninth part do not include medical texts and were both copied by scribes active in Italy in the first half of the 16th century. Part VIII (ff. 187-194), which was copied by Konstantinos Mesobotes, contains the Liturgy of John Chrysostom, the most used of the eucharistic services of the Byzantine Church. Part IX (ff. 195-226) contains a collection of theological excerpts copied by Bernardinos Sandros, from Cremona. The last part of the manuscript (part X, ff. 227-232) again contains medical texts, all about diet, copied by an anonymous scribe. The manuscript was donated to Gonville and Caius College Library by John Caius (1510-1573), the English physician and second founder of the College. He travelled in Italy from 1539-1544, where he consulted various manuscripts (see S. Berlier, John Caius et le De usu partium. Contribution à l'histoire du texte de Galien, in: Revue d'Histoire des Textes n.s. 6 (2011), pp. 1-14: pp. 5-6) and probably acquired at least some of the Greek manuscripts he later bequeathed to the College. The leaves of part III ff. 120-134 are heavily stained, in particular f. 129r (charcoal?), where a part of the text is not readable anymore. The leaves of part VII are heavily affected by water stains.

Binding

Modern binding made in January 1986 by Douglas Cockerell and Son (i.e. Sydney Morris ('Sandy') Cockerell (1906-1987)) (see note by the binder pasted on the right pastedown, where is also pasted a sample of the previous cover in leather, with blind tooling). Marbled paper cover over millboard; leather on spine. Gold tooling on spine with title ‘ Galeni et aliorum opera quaedam. Liber Johannis Caii’; two paper labels with the two shelfmarks, ‘ 582’ and ‘ 455’, are pasted on it.

232 × 180 × 33 mm.

Accompanying Material

The three later endleaves at the beginning of the manuscript, ff. [a]-[c] , and two at the end , ff. [d]-[e] were probably added with the modern binding.

History

Provenance and Acquisition

The manuscript was donated to the Library by John Caius (1510-1573) (see the note on f. i recto). On the left pastedown is pasted the Gonville and Caius College bookplate with the shelfmarks.

Watermarks: ff. 1-91 Coat of arms with three lilies in a shield surmounted by a crown; under the shield a letter ( 70 × 42 mm. ) in the gutter, no exact parallels found in the main repertoires, due to the fact that only a small part of the watermark is visible, but see Briquet Armoiries 1718-1766 , which are dated between the second half of the 15th c. and the first half of the 16th (France). ff. 92-93 Countermark ‘A’ in the external corner of the leaf.
Extent: Codex: 1 + 97 leaves. ff. i-91 225 × 175 mm. ff. 92-93 210 × 150 mm. ff. 94-95 208 × 140 mm.

Collation

Part I is formed mainly by quaternions; quire 12 lost a leaf without loss of text. Quires 13 and 14 are two bifolia.

  • One endleaf (15th/16th c.), f. i
  • Quires 1-118 ff. 1-23, 24a, 24-27, 28a, 28-86( 1-11)
  • Quire 126-1 ff. 87-91
  • Quires 13-142 ff. 92-95

On ff. 1r-91v, signatures in black/grey ink, in Arabic numerals in the lower margin, right, of the first leaf of the quires, from 1 ( f. 1r) to 12 ( f. 87r). They are passim to be found also in the lower margin, right, of the last leaf of the quires. On ff. 1r-91v, horizontal and vertical (from the top down) catchwords are visible passim, in the lower margin, verso, of the last leaf of the quires, near the gutter.

Condition

Ff. 71-91 lost the lower right corner; the damage was repaired with paper strips. The damage did not affect the text.

Layout

ff. 1r-90v A single column of 25 lines. 160 × 95 mm.

Hand(s)

ff. 1r-90v Hand A: the texts were copied in a minuscule script, by the hand of Iohannes Babamos (16th c., first half) (Ἰωάννης Βαβάμος, RGK I, 159), as it is specified in a note written on f. 90v by John Caius (for the identification of the hand of Caius see Gundert 2009, p. 67).

The text is written in a black ink.

Hand a: passim in the margins, and on ff. i verso, 92r, there are notes in black ink by John Caius (1510-1573) , who made correctiones to the text (see Gundert 2009, p. 67)

The text is written in a black/grey ink.

Additions

On f. i recto there is a note concerning the donation of the manuscript to the College by John Caius: ‘ Collegio suo de Goneville | et Caius in Cantabrigia, | Joannes Caius dono dedit’.

On f. i verso, by John Caius' hand, there is a small table of contents of this part of the manuscript and a note signalling that a list of the contents of the following parts of the manuscript is to be found on f. 92r.

On f. 94r, perpendicularly to the direction of script in the other leaves of the manuscript, are written some notes in Greek, they are corrections to the text, probably by John Caius. Ff. 92-93 and 94-95 are two bifolia added to this part of the manuscript by John Caius. Ff. 93-94, in particular, formed a single leaf which has been folded, as is shown by the notes written on it transversa charta.

History

Origin:

Part I of the manuscript was copied by Iohannes Babamos (possibly Vaban? Vavan?) in Paris; the watermarks suggest a period between the second half of the 15th century and the first half of the 16th century. Since the identity of the scribe was specified by John Caius ( Gundert 2009, p. 67) in a note on f. 90v, the copy of the text should probably be dated to the first half of the 16th c. (see also RGK I, 159).
