Binding
(?) Original red leather over wooden boards, with two indents on the upper and lower covers for clasps (now missing, but part of the catch-piece of the upper clasp on the rear cover remains); re-backed with brown leather and two paper pastedowns with Gonville and Caius shelfmark numbers printed in red ('715') and black ('328') ink.
A 17th-century title inscription on the front cover reads: ‘Summa confessorum vel Summa de Casibus Conscientiae’
The inside covers feature paper pastedowns with printed text in a vertical orientation. The two pastedowns have been made from a single page ('108') from a chapter (‘De privilegiis ex etcessi priuilegia’) from an edition of Dominicus de Sancto Geminiano [Domenico da San Gimignano] (d. 1424)'s Lectura super sexto Decretalium (e.g. see Lectura sup sexto libro decretalium cum apostillis clarissimorum virorum Bernardini ex capitaneis de Landriano Joanis quoque de gradibus et postremo Celsi Hugo [...] (Piston, 1520), p. 268).
History
Provenance and Acquisition
William Lyndwood (c. 1375-1446) , Fellow of Pembroke College, Cambridge, later Doctor of Canon Law at Oxford: ownership of the manuscript suggested by the copy of a letter addressed to him on f. 176v (see M.R. James (1908), I); considering Lyndwood's career at Oxford, it is of interest that one 15th-century addition refers to religious manuscripts for sale at a market in Oxford (f. [iii] verso), suggesting that the annotator was located there or, at least, familiar with the city.
John Sperhawke (fl. c. 1400-1474) , Fellow of Pembroke Hall, Cambridge; Master of Arts and Doctor of Divinity (1453): according to an inscription by a later owner on f. 176r: ‘Liber quondam magistri Johannis Speyrhawke doctoris, prec. xxiiijs ’; for Sperhawk, see Emden (1963), p. 545).
Arrived at Gonville and Caius College at an unknown date before 1697: its classmark numbers ('715' and '328') on printed labels pasted on the spine. Its armorial bookplate pasted on the inside of the upper cover of the former binding, inscribed with the classmark numbers '715' and '328'. Recorded as no. 813 in Edward Bernard's Catalogi librorum manuscriptorum Angliae et Hiberniae in unum collecti, 2 vols in one (Oxford: Theatro Sheldoniano, 1697).

Language(s): Leaves from a Latin manuscript with marginal additions in Middle English
These four folios are made from two consecutive leaves from a copy of Livy's Ab urbe condita, containing Book I.20-27; because the original two leaves were turned at a 45 degree angle and then folded vertically in order to create two bifolia, the original text is now in a vertical orientation.

About 58 lines to the page, written below top line.
The other texts in this Part have been written into the blank spaces around the fragmentary text of Livy, by several hands, so it is not possible to record written dimensions or ruling practices for these.
Hand(s)
Copied by a single hand in a Northern Textualis script.
Additions copied by several hands in cursive Anglicana scripts.
Decoration
This part of the manuscript does not feature any significant forms of decoration.

Two 15th-century hands have added a title to f. 1r, each writing one half: ‘Iste liber vocatur summa confessorum . siue summa de casibus consciencie’. The hand that wrote ‘siue summa...’ etc also wrote an explicit to f. 173r: ‘Explicit summa de casibus conscientie secundum compilacionem fratris Bartholomei de piss ordinis predicatorum’. This same hand appears to have written the note relating to John Speyrhawke on f. 176r. See Provenance for further details.
