The College's printed armorial bookplate with the classmark number '228' inscribed in red ink, and a separtae paper pastedown with the number '213' inscribed in brown ink, on the inside of the upper cover.

Part 1 [Cambridge, Gonville and Caius College, MS 213/228, ff. [i], [iv], [v]]

Contents

Language(s): Latin

1. [i] recto, [iv] verso
Household accounts (fragment)
Language(s): Latin
Rubric: [iv] verso ffeod. et vad.
Incipit: [iv] verso-[i] recto Idem comput. in denar. solut. Radd[...] Botiller milit. dominus de Suedeley Constabular. Castri d[e] Conwy

f. [i] and f. [iv] originally formed of a single leaf, but it has been folded in half to create a bifolium of flyleaves for the current manuscript. Consequently, the texts on f. [i] recto and f. [iv] verso run continuously and the original document begins on f. [iv] verso.

2. [v] verso
Household accounts (fragment)
Language(s): Latin

This leaf is part of the same document as ff. [i] recto-[i] verso and [iv] recto-[iv] verso. While the latter leaves form a bifolium, f. [v] has lost its counterpart, the preceding folio, which has been excised.

Physical Description

Form: unknown
Support: Parchment
Extent: This part is a fragment, consisting of three parchment leaves that originally were part of a single parchment document, perhaps a charter or roll. These fragments make up a single bifolium (ff. [i], [iv]) at the beginnig of the manuscript - with another bifolium (ff. [ii]-[iii]) bound inside it that comes from another manuscript - and a single leaf at the end (f. v) that was taken of the same document and also folded into a bifolium to create flyleaves for this manuscript. However, the first leaf of the latter bifolium was cut out, leaving only a stub. 3 leaves. 165 × 105-110 mm.

Condition

ff. [i] and [v] contain various tears and many small holes, perhaps caused by insects.

Layout

No ruling visible. Since the original document has been cut up, the number of lines to the page cannot be established.

Hand(s)

Written in a Gothic cursive script of the 15th century, containing both Anglicana and Secretary features.

Decoration

One large brown initial on f. [iv] verso.

History

Origin: 1441×1461. ; England.

The text opens with a payment to Ralph Boteler (c. 1394-1473) [previously unidentified], soldier and administrator, who is here referred to as 'Lord of Sudeley' and 'Constable of Conwy Castle'. Since he was created 1st Baron Sudeley in 1441 and was Constable of Conwy Castle between 1436 and 1461, the document must have been written between 1441 and 1461.
