History
Provenance and Acquisition
Roger Marchall (fl. 1436-1477), doctor of medicine : his name 'R. Marchall' inscribed on pp. [ii] recto and 2. See L. Voigts, 'A doctor and his books: the manuscripts of Roger Marchall (d. 1477)', in R. Beadle and A. J. Piper (eds.), New science out of old books: studies in manuscripts and early printed books in honour of A.I. Doyle (Aldershot, 1995) pp. 249-314 (p. 270 and plates 43(a), 43(b), and 48(b).
Probably donated by Roger Marchall to Gonville and Caius College with other manuscripts, but certainly in the college's library by the year 1600, when it was recorded as no. 132 (p. 2)in the Ecloga Oxonio-Cantabrigiensis by Thomas James (1600). Also no. 971 (f. inside of the front cover) in Bernard, Catalogi librorum manuscriptorum Angliæ et Hiberniæ (c. 1697). The College's printed armorial bookplate with handwritten classmark numbers '57' and '105' feature on a paper pastedown on the inside of the front cover; and its number '105' handwritten on a paper pastedown on f. [i] recto.

The rubric has been partly effaced and the work has not been identified. However, its structure closely matches with the Practica of William of Brescia [Guglielmo Corvi], as printed in Excellentissimi medici Guilielmi Brixiensis aggregatoris dictorum illustrium medicorum ad unamquamque egritudinem a capite ad pedes practica, nunc primum ad communem usum edita et impressa. Ejusdem de febribus tractatus optimus, de peste, de consilio observando tempore pestilentiali, ac etiam de cura pestis tractatus perspicuus ejusdem (Venice: Scottus, 1508), although the manuscript omits its discussions of the symptoms and causes of ailments, and presents cures only.
