Layout

Hand(s)

The manuscript is written by the Belgian scholar Lieven Van der Maude , known as Levinus Ammonius (1485?-1556) (RGK I 10) in Greek and in Latin. He was a Carthusian monk of St Maartensbos (Brussels) and correspondent of Erasmus of Rotterdam. The Greek script is a minuscule influenced by contemporary printing types.

Syllabic abbreviations and superscript letter endings are few, breathings are courved and not joined to accents; mute iota is constantly in used.

Punctuation used includes the middle and upper point, lower comma and full stop.

Young (1953) had previously identified the copyist as Giovanni Onorio da Maglie, for ff. 107-136 (Theognis).

Decoration

Simple major initials in majuscule in blue ink on ff. 1r, 1v, 67v, 73r, 107v and 147r; in blue and red ink on ff. 61v and 93r.

Pied-de-mouche widely used: in red ink on ff. 1r, 1v, 107v, and 147r, in blue ink troughout the entire manuscript.

Additions

f. a recto: ‘Dono Danieli Rogerio Joannes Olivarius dono dabam pridie calend. Martii 1564’.

Binding

Rebacked with couched-laminate boards in 1954, the classmark is tooled in gold on the spine. The binding re-uses panels probably made in France (end of 15th cent. - early 16th cent.); in all likelihood these belonged to the original binding. Both boards are stamped: a rectangle contains four panels decorated with vine branches of grapes and dogs. The panels surrounded by four fleur de lis in the corners and illegible verses. Very similar panels are found on the binding of Cambridge, University Library, MS Kk.6.23.

215 × 151 × 22 mm.

History

Origin: The manuscript was written by Levinus Ammonius (1518-1556), in all likelihood between 1530 and 1556.

Provenance and Acquisition

As stated in the note on f. a recto, the manuscript was presented in 1564 to the Anglo-Flemish diplomat and politician Daniel Rogers (b. 1538?, d. 1591) by the Spanish scholar Pedro Juan Oliver .

The manuscript is not included in Thomas James's catalogue of 1600, nor in the manuscript catalogue CCCC MS 490, which lists additions to the Parker collection up to 1613, with further entries bringing the acquisitions up to second half of 17th century. It appears in William Stanley's catalogue of 1722: the classmark Lib. ab Al. 29 remains of f. a recto.
