A catalogue of Western manuscripts and papyri at Cambridge University Library, the Fitzwilliam Museum and selected Cambridge colleges

Cambridge, Christ's College, MS Rouse 359

Diktyon no.: Diktyon 76563

Contents

Introduction: The manuscript is closely related to Cambridge, Christ's College, MS Rouse 358; both are anthologies of Greek literary texts copied by Carolus Stephanus. MS Rouse 359 contains works by Sophocles, Pindar, Hesiod and Aeschylus. The texts of the Greek poets are accompanied by numerous extracts from various encyclopaedias and commentaries from the 16th century; for example, the Greek hypotheses to Sophocles' tragedies are accompanied by Latin translations by the German humanist Thomas Naogeorgus (ca. 1511-1563), published in 1558. The periocha (very short summaries of the tragedies, on sect. 1, p. [viii]) and the notes copied in the margins of the tragedies are also taken from this same translation. Although it does not seem to have been intended to be divided into volumes, the manuscript is conceived in four sections, each with independent pagination. Dr Matteo Di Franco

Hand(s)

The manuscript is entirely written by Carolus Stephanus in mixed minuscule, characterized by marked contrast between thick and thin strokes, the cursive style and the large size of capital letters.

Decoration

Numerous stencilled ornaments placed to fill in empty spaces at the end of books or to separate hypotheses from books, e.g.: sect. 1, pp. 51, 112, 113, 114, 171, 172[c].

Oval printed frames have been glued on the pages that serve as frontispieces of the sections: sect. 1, p. [v], sect. 2, p. [iii], sect. 3, p. [iii],

Additions

A circular book-plate pasted on sect. 1, pp. [v] and [x] containing the three coats of arms of the city Nuremberg and that of the Behaim von Schwarzburg family of Nuremberg connected by loops; lettered above Bib: Nor: (Bibliotheca Norica) (cf. F. Warnecke, Die deutschen Bücherzeichen (ex-libris), Berlin 1890, no. 1473).

Leaf tab markers in parchment pasted on sect. 1, p. [vii], sect. 2, p. [i], sect. 4, p. [i].

Binding

Light brown parchment over paste-laminate boards. The thongs are laced through the parchment joint and pasted onto the inner side of the boards.
