Contents

Introduction: The manuscript contains a Nomocanon in 277 chapters in modern Greek. The Nomocanon is a collection of ecclesiastical regulations (canons) and civil laws relating to ecclesiastical matters. This codex was owned by the English teacher, classical scholar and educational reformer William Henry Denham Rouse (1863–1950), fellow of Christ's College. He cited it as ‘Nomocanon iii’ in an article he published in 1899 about ‘Folklore from the Southern Sporades’ (Rouse 1899), where he stated that he had acquired it, with three other Greek manuscripts (Cambridge, Christ's College, 262, 264, and 266) in the neighbourhood of the Greek Isle of Cos. Physical Description

Form: codex
Support: ff. 1r-121v Western paper, folded in octavo. Watermarks: Crescent (maybe two) in the upper edge of the leaf, near the gutter not clearly visible.
Extent: Codex: iii + 121 + iii leaves., 157 × 95-105 mm.
Foliation: Modern pencil foliation, in Arabic numerals, in the top right hand corner, recto: [i]-[iii] + 1-121 + [iv]-[vi]

Collation

The manuscript has been bound very tightly and there is no numbering of the quires, therefore it is not possible to establish its quire structure.

Catchwords by the scribe in the lower margin verso of each leaf, near the gutter, written horizontally.

Condition

There are tears on the edges of some leaves, particularly at the beginning and at the end of the mauscript (see ff. 1-3 and 120-121; ff. 120-121 have been restored). The leaves are yellowed throughout the volume and there are often stains (see, for example, ff. 15v-16v, 71r-71v).

Layout

Irregular layout, one single column, 17 to 20 lines 120 × 80 mm.

Hand(s)

ff. 1r-119v Hand A: the texts have been written by a single hand in an informal minuscule script, slightly slanting to the right, irregular in structure and ductus (speed of writing).

The text is written in light brown ink; titles and initials in red.

ff. 120r-121v Hand B: a later hand wrote annotations in the last leaves of the manuscript and passim in the margins, in a cursive minuscule. The ink is black.

Decoration

On f. 1r there is a rectangular headpiece traced in brown ink, with interlace patterns, and particulars coloured in red; the ink has partially faded. On ff. 14r and 21v there are two similar rectangular headpieces in brown ink, smaller than the one on f. 1r, filled with an interlace decoration, with particulars coloured in red.

Thick initials in red ink, sometimes simply decorated with scrollworks (see, for example, f. 21v).

Additions

Passim there are in the margins annotations by another hand (see ff. 29r, 31v).

On ff. 120r-121v there are scribbled notes in black ink by another later hand, including the name ‘ αιρηνη(?) του Καλογερακη Ιωάνι Κωνσταντήετη(?) ’, written also by another hand.

On the left pastedown and on ff. [i] recto-[ii] recto there are annotations in pencil by later librarians concerning the acquisition of the manuscript and indicating a previous shelfmark.

Binding

Modern full leather binding over millboards. The title ‘Greek MS.’ is tooled in gold on the spine.

165 × 115 × 37 mm.

History

Origin: The manuscript was copied probably in the 17th century. Some clues about the provenance of the manuscript could come from an annotation by a hand different than the main scribe on the upper margin of f. 1r. The ink has faded, one word has been intentionally deleted, and parts of the note are lost due to the leaf's damage, but possibly a reference to a monastery can be read: ἐκ τοῦ βίβλ… ἐκ τοῦ ὄρους … ἐκ τῆς μονῆς(?) τοῦ ἁγίου Γε(?) ….

Provenance and Acquisition

The manuscript came into possession of W.H.D. Rouse (1863–1950) certainly before 1899, when he published an article in which he cites it ( Rouse 1899; he acquired it in Cos.

Presented to Christ's College by W.H.D. Rouse , 10 July 1940.
