Contents

Introduction: This manuscript, copied probably in the 16th century, contains Liturgical texts and a Nomocanon. It is formed of four parts; although clearly distinguishable for the script, the layout and also in terms of dimensions, they seem to be fairly consistent in terms of chronology and provenance. The first part comprises a nomocanon in modern Greek, an akolouthia, a liturgical office promulgated by the Council of Constantinople in 1484 for those renouncing the Latin faith, and some prayers. The second and the fourth part are both smaller and contain parts of the Liturgy of the Presanctified gifts, a communion evening service, for use on days when there is no Eucharist, such as weekdays during Lent. The third part contains a part of a Euchologion, a prayer book for various services of the Byzantine rite. The manuscript was owned by the English teacher, classical scholar and educational reformer William Henry Denham Rouse (1863-1950), fellow of Christ's College. He cited it as ‘ Nomocanon I’ in an article he published in 1899 about ‘ Folklore from the Southern Sporades’ ( Rouse 1899), where he mentioned that he had acquired it, with other three Greek manuscripts ( Cambridge, Christ's College, 264, 265, and 266) in the neighbourhood of the Greek Isle of Cos. A note on f. 2:4v confirms the provenance of the manuscript from the Dodecanese (Southern Sporades), as it attests that the codex, in 1723, was bought from a Kalymniot. Dr Erika Elia

Physical Description

Form: codex
Support:
Extent: Codex: ii + 177 + ii leaves.
Foliation: The manuscript exhibits two modern foliations in pencil, in Arabic numerals, in the lower margin, left, recto (here labeled respectively as 1 and 2). The second numbering exhibits twice the number 48 (2:48 and 2:48[a]): [i]-[ii] + 1:1-1:60 + 2:1-2:48 + 2:48[a] + 2:49-2:116 + [iii]-[iv].

Collation

The condition of the manuscript does not allow to reconstruct completely the original collation, in particular for the first part of the codex. For part I of the manuscript it is possible to recognize with certainty only two quaternions; part II is formed by a ternion which lost the last leaf; part III is formed mainly by quaternions. ff. [i]-[ii], ff. 1:1-1:19, Quires 1-28, ff. 1:36-1:55 | Quire 36-1 | ff. 1:61-1:64, Quires 4-168, Quire 178-1 | ff. 2:115-2:116

Condition

The manuscript suffered severe damage. Some leaves lost significant parts along the edges and were restored by means of paper strips ( ff. 1:42r-1:54v) or glassine (ff. ff. 1:1r-1:2v, 1:55r-1:56v, 2:116r-2:116v). Almost half of ff. 1:5r-1:5v has been lost. On various leaves ink faded due to water damage. Water stains are present throughout the volume, in particular on ff. 2:45r-2:108v. Insect damage is also detectable throughout the volume.

Binding

19th-century full leather binding over millboards, by J.P. Gray and Son in Cambridge. There is a decorative blind tooling on the covers. The title ‘ Greek MS.’ is tooled in gold on the spine.

159 × 107 × 35 mm.

History

Provenance and Acquisition

The manuscript came into possession of William Henry Denham Rouse (1863-1950) certainly before 1899, when he published an article in which he cited it ( Rouse 1899); he acquired it in Cos (see Rouse 1899).

The codex was presented to Christ's College by W.H.D. Rouse , Honorary Fellow of Christ's, in 1940 (see label pasted on the left pastedown).

  • ιβ΄ on f. 2:107v

Layout

ff. 2:1r, 2:5r-2:107v A single column of 18 lines. 115 × 70 mm.

ff. 2:1v-2:4v A single column of 16-17 lines. ca. 110 × ca. 65 mm.

Hand(s)

ff. 2:1r, 2:5r-2:107v Hand C: a minuscule script, slanting slightly to the right, with moderate variation in letter size; passim there are flourishing tails in the margins (see e.e. f. 2:20r).

The text is written in brown ink, initials in red.

ff. 2:1v-2:4v Hand D: a minuscule script, characterized by variation in letter size, a cursive and exuberant ductus, and frequent flourishing tails in the margins.

The text is written in brown ink, initials in brown and red. Some letters are traced with a double stroke in black and red, and sometimes loops are filled in red.

Decoration

Decorated headpieces precede some of the texts:

  • f. 2:24r heart-shaped decoration with palmettes at the corners;
  • f. 2:13r, 2:48[a] recto interlace decoration with palmettes at the corners;
  • f. 2:108r decoration with vegetal scrolls, palmettes at the corners.

Friezes precede some of the texts:

  • ff. 2:78v, 2:101v, 2:103r, 2:104v, 2:105v, 2:106r rope in red ink or black ink;
  • f. 2:84r rectangular frieze filled with a scroll motif in black and red ink;
  • f. 2:100r frieze formed by a double ribbon with two knots.

Decorated initials traced in black and red ink, with vergetal motifs, (see e.g. ff. 2:5r-2:5v), or palmettes (see e.g. f. 2:24r); initials in red or brown ink with vegetal motifs, see e.g. on ff. 2:18v-2:19r; an anthropomorphic initial on f. 2:20v.

Additions

Passim there are jumble annotations, pen trials by hands which show low writing skills, see ff. 2:21r-2:21v.

On f. 2:4v there is an acquisition note in modern Greek, by a later hand, signed on 3rd October 1723 by a certain papas Ioannes, who says he bought the codex from a Kalymniot. A later hand wrote under the date in Greek numerals ‘1743’, reading, wrongly, the 3rd number as μ΄ (40) instead of κ΄ (20).

History

Origin: The script suggests a copy of this part of the manuscript in the 16th century.

Provenance

As the note on f. 2:4v attests, this part of the manuscript (at least) was probably in Kalymnos around 1723.
