Medieval Manuscripts in Cambridge Libraries

A catalogue of Western manuscripts and papyri at Cambridge University Library, the Fitzwilliam Museum and selected Cambridge colleges

Cambridge, Christ's College, MS Rouse 254

Diktyon no.: Diktyon 11808

Contents

Introduction: This manuscript, probably copied in the late 16th century, contains a Miscellany of Greek ascetic texts, including Lives of Saints, other narratives about early ascetics and brief texts and excerpts giving spiritual guidance. Most are anonymous or of patristic origin, while others are by Byzantine or post-Byzantine authors. The manuscript was copied by several different scribes, whose work was greatly interspersed, the more prolific scribes' hands appearing at several points through the manuscript. One copyist often took over from another in the middle of a page of text. Their styles vary greatly, some being compact and informal, while others wrote in a flamboyant, calligraphic hand derived from the late Byzantine Hodegon style, sometimes with ornate flourished tails often decorated with red ornament. Given the nature of the content, the manuscript can be supposed to have been produced for monastic use. The manuscript was bought by the classicist and teacher W. H. D. Rouse on the island of Kalymnos in 1898. Another manuscript bought by Rouse on the same island that year, now MS Rouse 255, containing two hagiographic texts, was copied by two hands, both of which appear in this manuscript. This raises the possibility that they came from the same source and had a history of common ownership extending back to the time of production. Unfortunately, Rouse's note in the other manuscript recording this acquisition is vague about the purchase, saying only that the manuscript came from one of the numerous islands of the Sporades, while the equivalent note in this manuscript (f. [i] verso) gives no information on its provenance beyond the date and place of purchase. Dr Christopher Wright

Physical Description

Form: codex
Support: The whole manuscript is composed of Western paper, but due to the extent of damage to the edges of folios and their repair with thick paper, including in the gutter, it has not been possible to identify watermarks in many parts of the manuscript. The list of paper types therefore provides incomplete coverage of the volume. ff. 1-30, ff. 176-209 Western paper, folded in quarto. Watermark: Crescent ( 13 × 15 mm. ) in the gutter, similar to Briquet 5190. This example is dated to 1551. It is possible that this is merely the upper part of a larger watermark, such as the one present on ff. 126-129, the remainder of which may be concealed by repairs. ff. 31-35, ff. 88-91 Western paper, folded in quarto. The watermark is not visible; the countermark resembles those of, for example, Mošin 2119, 2125-2126, dated to 1610-1620. ff. 36-45 Western paper, folded in quarto. Watermark: Crown ( c. 50 × 23 mm. ) in the gutter, similar but not identical to Heawood 1129, 1131, and with a different countermark, containing a trefoil and the letters B and G. The former example is dated to c. 1565, the latter is undated. ff. 231-246 Western paper, folded in quarto. Watermark: Anchor ( c. 65 × c. 45 mm. ) in the gutter, similar to Velkov Ancre inscrite dans un cercle 206-207, 220-223, 226-231, 233-236, 240, 242-258, 263, 267-268, 277-288, 290. These examples are dated to 1625-1649. ff. 247-261 Western paper, folded in quarto. Watermark: Anchor ( c. 60 × 37 mm. ) in the gutter, similar but not identical to Mošin 2417. This example is dated to 1565-1575.

There are quire signatures in Greek numerals, probably originally in black ink but faded due to water damage, on the first folio of Quires 2-4, recto, upper right (ιʹ-ιβʹ). As these begin from the number 10, the incomplete Quire 1, forming a continuous sequence with Quire 2, was presumably number 9 of this sequence, indicating the loss of eight preceding quires. These are probably original to the production of the manuscript. Crosses, probably of the same origin, have been marked in the centre of the upper margin of the first folio of each quire, recto, and the last folio of each quire, verso, on Quires 1-4. A similar signature in a new sequence, also combined with crosses, appears on Quire 6 with the number 2 (βʹ). This suggests that the incomplete Quire 5 was number 1 in this sequence. Another sequence of original signatures, in Greek numerals, in brown ink, appears on the first folio of each quire, recto, upper right, and the last folio of each quire, verso, lower left, beginning with the number 10, on Quires 10-12, (ιʹ-ιβʹ). These are also combined with crosses. A cross marking the beginning of a new quire appears on the first folio of Quire 14, recto, in the centre of the upper margin. Another cross has been placed, perhaps later, in the upper right-hand corner. A cross marking the beginning of a new quire appears on the first folio of Quire 17, recto, in the centre of the upper margin. Another sequence of signatures in Greek numerals, in black or brown ink, appears on the first folio of each quire, recto, upper right, beginning with the number 2, on Quires 19-20 (βʹ-γʹ). This suggests that Quire 18 was number 1 in this sequence. These are also combined with crosses. Another sequence of original signatures in Greek numerals, in black ink, appears on the first folio of each quire, recto, upper right, and the last folio of each quire, verso, upper right, beginning with the number 1, on Quires 26-34 (αʹ-ηʹ). Signatures of the same sequence, in red or black ink, on the last folio of each quire, verso, lower right or lower centre, also appear on Quires 27-30. This sequence is also combined with crosses. Original catchwords appear on the last folio of Quires 1-2, 5, 10-11, 18-20, 26-28, 30-31 and 33-34, verso, lower right.

Condition

There is widespread and serious pest damage through most of the manuscript, in places causing minor loss of text, which has led to extensive repairs with paper patches, with transparent patches in the written area. These repairs have caused hingeing and restrict the opening. Much of the manuscript has also suffered extensive water staining, leading in places to fading of text in the uppermost lines. On ff. 160r and 210r-261v, this is accompanied by green stains in the upper margin. Iron gall corrosion is present in places. There are areas of dirt and drops of wax.

Hand(s)

The main text of ff. 1r-30v, 108r-135r, line 11, ff. 151r-209v were copied by Hand A in a calligraphic Hodegon-style mixed minuscule script, slanting to the right, in black ink. There is moderate variation in letter size and frequent flourishing of tails into the margin. When appearing in the bottom line, some letters often form triple loops below, often with red infill in the loops (e.g. ff. 1r, 13r). Loops of letters and the inside of curves are also sometimes filled with red ink. Letters and abbreviations in the bottom line often have long, kinked tail in a pattern forming a space in which a red dot has been placed, sometimes overlaid with silver (e.g. f. 1r), or sometimes a more ornate decoration (e.g. ff. 16r, 190v, 192r).

Syllabic abbreviations and superscription of word endings appear throughout the line. Breathings are round and mute iota is subscript. There is decorative use of the double dot, and accentuation of all nomina sacra . Accents are sometimes joined to letters. The double grave accent is in use.
